S G I M F e h t Honoring 21 f o s s a l C Graduating Graduation Ceremony Saturday, November 13, 2021 5:30 pm - 7:30 PM CDT Austin Convention Center Ballroom F&G, 4th Level Austin, Texas A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT James K Robinson, III, MD, MS FMIGS 2021 President MedStar Washington Hospital Center Washington, DC Congratulations to the FMIGS Class of 2021! As I pondered my thoughts and wishes for this year’s graduates, I was struck by the transformative changes our field has witnessed over the 17 years since I interviewed for an AAGL/SRS 1-year Fellowship in Gynecologic Endoscopy I also began imagining where we would be in another 17 years In 2004 I was fortunate to get interviews across the country with some of the educational giants of our field I observed CY Liu, Andrew Brill, and Tom Lyons operate during my interviews with them I was graciously hosted independently by Camran Nezhat, Keith Isaacson, and Eberhardt Lotze at their respective centers Prabhat Ahluwalia interviewed me during that year’s annual meeting, and I took part in structured multiapplicant interviews with Joseph Sanfilippo and Ted Lee at Magee, and Ronald Levine and Resad (Paya) Pasic in Louisville It was a thrilling time and I felt like I was at the forefront of something very special That year all the fellowships were 1-year programs, credentialled by a joint venture between the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons Most fellowships had financial industry sponsorship cultivated through the corporate relationships of their primary faculty Most, but not all fellowships, offered a salary but contracts and salaries varied significantly The match, completed by hand in David Olive’s kitchen, occurred after the annual meeting to allow for prospective fellows and applicants to “get to know each other a little better.” For the most part, fellowships were accredited apprentice-based advanced surgical training models Graduates were universally viewed as Ob/Gyn generalists with advanced surgical training. There were no academic MIGS divisions (the term MIGS having not yet been adopted) and the expectation for obstetrical coverage was the norm at your first “real job.” Seventeen years, 58 multiyear FMIGS programs, and over 500 fellowship trained surgeons later a short list of our current superlatives includes: • A formalized NRMP match and collaborative interview schedule with ABOG recognized ACGME subspecialities • Standardized ACGME case logs and feedback mechanisms • A continuously updated reading list • An expansive surgical video curriculum • Collaborative SGS/AAGL Fellows Pelvic Research Network • Extensive research resources and required statistical training for all fellows • A required hands-on training bootcamp • World class educational didactic webinars • Educational programming, town hall meeting, and graduation ceremony for fellows at the annual meeting • Fair and transparent PGY 5-6 compensation with contracts meeting the standards of ACGME accredited fellowships Today as you graduate, MIGS programs exist at most academic residency programs and many of our graduates are finding positions as subspecialty consultants with limited or no obstetrical call coverage Gynecologic access to high quality, complex minimally invasive surgical care is widespread It is encouraging to see how far we have come but our future has never been more exciting You join a vibrant community of thought leaders, educators, researchers, and surgical experts JMIG has skyrocketed in impact factor attesting to the quality of our research Our fellowship committees are filled with brilliant and committed advocates for our field, our learners, and our patients As we claim our jurisdiction in women’s health and become nationally recognized as not only outstanding surgeons but as true subject matter and educational experts, I envision ACGME accreditation as a recognized ABOG subspecialty I see our graduates positioned in leadership roles across academic departments, private practice groups, policy forums, and advocacy groups With that shift, might we finally see socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic barriers to high quality benign gynecologic medical and surgical care fall? Will compensation models evolve to better account for complexity and outcome? What you believe the next 17 years will bring? I have seen our future in the quality of our graduates, and I couldn’t be more optimistic “Your off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so … get on your way!” Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
