The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English This tremendous achievement is recognized by a black, white, and blue cord at graduation Newburgh was one of the districts selected from hundreds of applicants into the NYS Seal of Civic Readiness pilot program The work that is done in Newburgh and other pilot districts will help to set the standard for how the Seal is offered and earned across New York State starting in the 2022-23 school year In order to earn the Seal, students must acquire points through various schoolwork and outside activities that demonstrate their knowledge of civics, as well as civic engagement In the spring of 2021 NFA North, NFA West, Meadow Hill and Temple Hill were awarded the Verizon Innovative Learning Platform Grant to help provide WiFi access for any student in need of Wi-Fi at home for their educational needs Our teachers stepped up to volunteer their time to help our buildings complete learning pathways and submit micro-credentials to qualify for the grant NYSED SELECTS NECSD TO PILOT NEW PATHWAY TO GRADUATION Newburgh was also selected by NYSED as one of the schools to pilot the new IAAP (Individual Arts Assessment Pathway) to graduation that will begin in September The IAAP offers high school students a graduation pathway that prepares them for future professional and educational experiences and opportunities in the arts Additionally, current research demonstrates that engagement with the arts leads to growth in cognitive skills, such as self-efficacy, empathy, and social engagement that are necessary in all areas of work and life NECSD HOSTED ZONE AREA ALL-STATE FESTIVAL DISTRICT LAUNCHES SELFCARE CALENDAR For the first time ever, Newburgh Free Academy welcomed hundreds of students from surrounding districts traveling from Orange, Ulster, Greene, Rockland, and Sullivan counties for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone Area All-State Festival Students were selected based on solo evaluation results from last spring and teacher recommendations Selected students performed in one of four ensembles, including Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Mixed Choir, and Treble Choir Nine students from NFA participated in this prestigious event This school year our Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) team, consisting of School Social Workers, School Psychologists, and School Counselors, have created a peer led “Self-Care Calendar” to offer our staff opportunities for wellness activities each month Our menu of options include hiking, painting, yoga, essential oil therapy, music therapy, journaling, and zoomba Our PPS staff are often responding to crises and supporting our students with the highest needs on a daily basis Putting on our “Oxygen Mask” first before helping those around us allows us to be present and available to help those in need NECSD ACCOMPLISHMENTS REPORT 2021-22 SCHOOL ACCOMPLISHMENTS VAILS GATE STEAM ACADEMY LAUNCHES MBK|MSK PROGRAM Scholars from Vails Gate STEAM Academy joined My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) and My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) The MBK|MSK initiative was created by President Barack Obama to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by young people of color and to ensure that all young people can reach their full potential Mrs Russell-Scott (MBK) and Mrs Whyte-Davis (MSK) have created a safe space for young scholars of color to freely express themselves Through their work and activities, these students are reminded why their voice and presence is important Scholars are learning how to better themselves and the world around them through action SMS SUCCESSFULLY FOCUSES ON RESTORATIVE PRACTICES The South Middle School team has been working to build capacity to better understand our scholars and our collective roles within the school community This year we have shifted one of our focuses toward restorative practices The core of restorative practices is building, improving and repairing relationships when conflict arises and to better understand those around us Restorative practices have been carried out through circles in the classrooms When students are faced with conflict they work with teachers, counselors and administrators to transfer the learning into practice in order to address and mitigate it We have found that students are finding their voice, learning and growing as scholars and community members It has positive results with longer lasting effects and provides students with skills that are transferable to real life application CELEBRITY MAKE-UP ARTIST AND HAIR STYLIST RETURNS TO SPEAK TO NFA STUDENTS Michelle deMilt, NFA alumna and 2002 graduate of the NFA Cosmetology program visited her alma mater to speak with students about her experience as an Emmy-nominated groomer and makeup artist With over 15 years of experience in the tv & film world Michelle has also expanded into red carpet, editorial, commercial, and press, where she primarily focuses on men’s grooming Her clients have included Blake Shelton, Lamorne Morris, Conan O’Brian, Henry Winkler, and Dan + Shay TV & film work includes shows such as The Voice, New Girl, Better Late Than Never, and Conan MEADOW HILL 1ST GRADERS PUBLISH BOOKS ABOUT ANIMALS Meadow Hill 1st grade students were excited to celebrate the end of a literacy unit with a publishing party to highlight their hard work! As part of the unit the students picked an animal and researched the habitat, characteristics, interesting facts and eating habits.The students then created a book that was both written and illustrated by our students The students celebrated their work by inviting any available adults and students in the building to read their stories and share their knowledge of the animals they researched We are proud of our 1st grade students and all they accomplished in creating their books! NFA ALUMNI RETURN FOR ANNUAL SOCCER GAME Dozens of NFA alumni returned to Academy Field to play in an annual alumni soccer game Coordinated, by current co-principal of NFA and former NFA Girls Soccer coach, Mr Matteo Doddo, the athletes returned to their former field to play and reminisce about their high school days Featured for this year’s event were the 1995 and 1997 Section IX championship teams Current NFA Soccer coach, Mr Dave Doulin and former NFA Soccer coach Jeff Cuilty were also on hand to celebrate and reconnect with the alumni NECSD ACCOMPLISHMENTS REPORT 2021-22 STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS NWS SCHOLAR WINS 1ST PLACE IN STATEWIDE POSTER CONTEST Five elementary scholars from New Windsor School participated in a statewide poster contest for the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) Students were charged with creating a poster to promote bus safety Of the submissions, Zyir Coleman, grade 2, moved on to the NYS competition and won First Place for his art Congratulations to Zyir! NFA NORTH SCHOLAR RECOGNIZED FOR PUBLISHED RESEARCH Science Research student Daniel Rego has been recognized for research he conducted as a junior with his mentor at West Point and her cadets The research Daniel was involved in was published in Frontiers in Microbiology in August, titled Utilizing Probiotics for the Prevention and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Diseases NFA SENIOR REPRESENTS NECSD AT STATE FORUM NFA Senior, Matthew Worrell was selected to represent Newburgh Schools in the NYS Education Department Forum regarding the NYS Graduation Measures today He was instrumental in facilitating student focus groups throughout the process Matthew also co-hosted a Black History Month presentation to the NYS MBK Fellows Matthew is a member of the NFA Boys Track team, the NFA Black History Club, and National Honor Society Matthew has been awarded the 2022 Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L Sanford Scholarship from the NYS Department of Education He will be attending Villanova University to study History in the fall He plans to become a Civil Rights Attorney STUDENT ATHLETES COMMITT TO COMPETE AT DIVISION I-III COLLEGES DIVISION I Alondra Cruz-Delgado, Track and Field, SUNY ASSOCIATION) ALL-COUNTY PERFORMANCE GROUPS Fourty-nine students throughout the NECSD were accepted into the OCMEA’s All-County Performance Groups including: High School Vocal Jazz, High School Instrumental Jazz, Junior High Chorus, Elementary Orchestra, Elementary Band, and Elementary Chorus Depending on the level, students are nominated by their teacher and may need to audition to earn their spot DIVISION II Semaj Branch, Football, American International College Eric Duncan, Football, American International College Bryanna Foti, Soccer, Dominican College Emille Gallagher, Softball, VARSITY ATHLETES AND THREE HEAD COACHES NAMED PLAYER/ COACH OF THE YEAR (CONTINUED) SCHOOL POLE VAULT RECORD BROKEN NFA FOOTBALL TEAM WINS SECTION IX TITLE Angelisse Diaz set a school record for pole vault clearing 10 feet She broke her own school record of feet at the state qualifier meet this winter She plans to attend University of Buffalo next year The NFA Varsity Football Team won the Section IX title and the Class AA Regional Quarter Finals The Section IX Coach’s Association named seven of our athletes to the All Section Selections team, the most from any team Athletes include: Emmanual Williams, Aidan Harrison, Sam Okeyo, Deondre Johnson (also chosen skill player of the year) Fabian Rhoden (also chosen lineman of the year), Dylan Iorlano, and Eric Duncan Javier Rodriguez (Boys Soccer), Jah’Likai King (Boys Basketball), and A’Mya Brock (Girls Basketball) each earned the title of Varsity845 Player of the Year for their respective sport Javier Rodriguez was also named to the Class AA, Section and state large-school all-star teams and repeated as a United Soccer Coaches All-American Jah’Likai King was also named Player of the Year for OCIAA, MHAL and BCANY A’Mya Brock is graduating from NFA a year early and will be attending NYMA for a post-graduate year NFA Girls and Boys Basketball and NFA Football head coaches Arturo Santana, Frank Dinnocenzio, and Billy Bianco, respectively, were named Coaches of the Year as well NFA BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM WINS SECTION IX TITLE The NFA Boys Basketball Team are 2021-2022 Section IX Champions NFA Senior Jah’Likai King and head coach Frank Dinnocenzio were named 2021-22 OCIAA Coaches Association All-Stars Player and Coach of the Year respectively Deondre Johnson was named to the All-Star team The team advanced to the Regional quarterfinals STAFF/FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS MRS LINDA ROMANO RECEIVES CARL PERKINS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD COACH BIANCO SETS SCHOOL RECORD AS WINNINGEST NFA VARSITY FOOTBALL COACH NECSD SECURITY MONITOR SAVES CHOKING CHILD WITH HEIMLICH MANEUVER Mrs Linda Romano has been selected to receive the 2023 New York State Carl Perkins Community Service Award Mrs Romano’s hard work and dedication to the field of Career and Technical Education is extraordinary and NYSACTE honored her for her dedication to students, the CTE profession and NYSACTE Mrs Romano teaches in the Health Sciences Pathway at NFA North Campus Coach Bianco surpassed the previous winningest record set by Coach Charles “Rip” Fornal and ended the season with 98 wins for his career so far Coach Fornal’s record of 96 wins had been intact since the early 1980s when he retired During his time as head coach, the Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks have competed in two state championships and have won section titles Coach Bianco has been named coach of the year for Section for five separate seasons, including this season NECSD Security Monitor Hector Almodovar jumped into action to administer the Heimlich Maneuver when 5th grade student Ariana Miranda was choking on an orange slice All NECSD Security Monitors are annually trained in Basic Life Saver First Aid and CPR and AED Certified We are thankful for Mr Almodovar’s quick reaction to help Ariana when she was in need! NECSD ACCOMPLISHMENTS REPORT 2021-22 STAFF/FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS (CONTINUED) MR CHARLIE RAPALJE RECOGNIZED FOR FIFTY YEARS OF DEDICATION TEACHER TO PARTICIPATE IN NASA CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAM GAMS TEACHER FEATURED ON NBC’S TODAY SHOW; RECEIVES FUNDING FOR ZEN DEN Mr Charlie Rapalje was recognized for 50 years of dedication, time, and never ending commitment to the Newburgh Free Academy Athletes Mr Rapalje has led the NFA Football Booster club for 50 years, most notably hosting the Block N dinner that celebrates athletes every year, creating yearbooks for each athlete, and documenting a thorough history of the NFA Football program Ms Aileen Toback has been invited and awarded the opportunity to participate in NASA’s Climate Change Research Initiative Educator Ambassadors (CCRI EA) program at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), after demonstrating substantial expertise in improving STEM and climate change education Aileen Toback has also demonstrated a strong passion and dedication to inspiring the next generation of explorers in authentic learning experiences while integrating NASA education content and resources into their classroom instruction Second grade teacher, Ms Megan Mata was featured on NBC’s The TODAY Show over the summer and received funding for her Zen Den and other school supplies NBC’s The TODAY Show coordinated the virtual surprise for Megan with a $5,000 Amazon gift card gifted to the school in honor of her Ms Mata was able to purchase items for her classroom Zen Den, supplies to help scholars understand and manage their emotions, math kits for students to reuse materials as their learning progresses, and floor desks, so students can easily move around the carpeted area and still be comfortable while learning! TWO NFA TEACHERS NAMED NYS MASTER TEACHERS Ms Tara Redican and Ms Jessica Benson have been selected to join the NYS Master Teachers Mid-Hudson Regional Cohort Ms Redican teaches Chemistry and Ms Benson teaches Living Environment and AP Biology Ms Benson is also a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy NEWBURGH TEACHER GETS $10K GRANT TO USE INNOVATIVE TRANSLATION TECHNOLOGY IN CLASSROOM Eighth-grade social studies teacher Ms Alyssa Cruz purchased four sets of the Timekettle WT2 translation devices, along with some new furniture and tools for group work, with a $10,000 Resilient Districts Prizes grant from the Future of School public education charity These devices allow students to hear the teacher’s instruction translated into their native language in real time, allowing students to immediately feel welcomed, connected, and up to date with the content HOH’S MS MICHELL WRIGHT JUMPP NAMED 2021 NYLA SCHOOL LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR Ms Michell Wright Jumpp has been named the 2021 New York Library Association’s School Librarian of the Year Given to a librarian who has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and service within the library community over the past 12 – 18 months Ms Jumpp is the School Library Media Specialist at Horizons on the Hudson’s elementary school In addition, Jenna Bush from the NBC Today Show made a special visit to the school to honor and feature Ms Wright Jumpp and she was also invited to be on The Today Show in-person NECSD ACCOMPLISHMENTS REPORT 2021-22 AROUND THE DISTRICT NFA PLANETARIUM Do you remember the NFA Planetarium?
