I would like to take a moment to begin another year by celebrating you and all those in the community who sustain our work Your support is absolutely key to helping Asante Ashland Community Hospital grow and prosper through its commitment to excellence and innovation I recently heard our CEO, Sheila Clough, describe how things were going at our hospital in one word—“FANTASTIC!” Later, she explained why she chose that word: • • • The hospital recently received a five-star rating for quality, safety and service from the national Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) We are one of only five hospitals in the state to receive this agency’s highest honor Asante Ashland patients also rank our hospital as one of the best in the nation Most departments have patient experience scores at the ninetieth percentile or above Patients rate their satisfaction with our inpatient services and our Emergency Department at the ninety-fourth percentile Our hospital is thriving financially, having maintained a positive operating income for the past four fiscal years Gone are the days when the hospital operated with a deficit All this has happened because Sheila and her excellent team of managers, staff and volunteers (including ACHF Board members) have dedicated themselves to moving Asante Ashland from good to great to fantastic And Sheila’s team includes all of you—our donors—who provide the inspiration and resources necessary for excellence You are our partners, our friends and our neighbors, whose generous philanthropy plays a crucial role in the success of our wonderful community hospital Thank you for what you to make Asante Ashland a community hospital we can all be proud of and a place where we know we will receive expert healthcare and services with kindness and compassion, whenever needed Sincerely, J OY DO BSON WAY , RN (RE T ), MS N MEET OUR NEW BOARD MEMBER to work at Southern Oregon University Recognizing the value of a community hospital that could conveniently provide basic medical services, she started making annual donations to the ACH Foundation As family members relocated to Oregon, they joined her in supporting the local hospital, too Foundation welcomes Linda Butler BORN IN LONG BEACH, California, Linda is the youngest of four children and the only girl She spent her childhood outdoors with her brothers, playing any game that required a ball or took place on the beach Hers was a close-knit family with the success of each celebrated by all Linda attended California State University at Long Beach and graduated with a degree in sociology She was on the Sailing Team and tutored underprivileged youth through an organization called Project Tutor Upon graduation, she enrolled in classes at UCLA, where her love of accounting flourished Linda worked for a CPA firm in Torrance She met her husband, Chuck, while picking up a friend at the dealership Chuck co-owned Their first date was a Neil Diamond concert at the Greek Theatre That was a good start, but it took three years and eight proposals before she said yes Linda and Chuck love the outdoors and decided to move north to spend more time downhill and cross-country skiing, boating, hiking and backpacking They lived a year in Redding before moving north again to a little town in Oregon At the time, they had never even been to Oregon, but they took a chance They have been in Ashland forty-two years now, and two of their children were born here On arriving in Ashland, they decided to work together to build something for their future Having started with Butler Ford, they now own Acura, Kia and Hyundai franchises “We took a chance on Ashland and each other, and we could not be happier with our decision,” says Linda She has a long history of community service, including serving on the Ashland Community Hospital Board of Directors from 2004 to 2013 and Ashland Community Hospital Foundation Evans Nursing Scholarship committee from 2007 to 2013 Please join us in welcoming Linda Butler to the Ashland Community Hospital Board Foundation of Directors! “I feel pretty strongly that we need a hospital in Ashland,” Peg says “Ashland is richer for having its hospital.” Peg is professor emerita of music at SOU and the author of a bibliography of choral works and various articles and reviews She’s spent forty-five years as a church organist and choir director and has given organ recitals and workshops throughout the United States Peg served for four years as the national vice president of the American Guild of Organists and is currently compiling a database of hymn-based organ works for the Church Music Institute, based in Dallas, Texas She is a member, teacher and Council member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University Ashland is richer for having its hospital The Evans sisters A L EG AC Y OF GIVING Distinguished Service Award goes to Barb and Peg Evans A FAMILY LEGACY OF service and philanthropy earned sisters Barb and Peg Evans the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from Ashland Community Hospital Foundation As the daughters of Dr William and Mrs Ruth Evans, Barb and Peg Evans have continued to honor their beloved parents and expand their legacy through ongoing support of the Evans Endowed Nursing Scholarship and other Foundation programs William Evans was a family physician who practiced for fifty years in Pennsylvania before coming to Ashland in 1998 The family funded medical education scholarships and health projects in Pennsylvania When William died in 2002, Ruth Evans— a nurse during World War II—established an endowed scholarship fund for nurses A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Barb Evans performed as a professional clarinetist for fourteen years and sang professionally in Iowa City, Iowa She also worked as a certified veterinary technician Barb volunteers weekly at Asante Ashland Community Hospital and particularly enjoys assisting in the ACH Foundation office The sisters support philanthropic projects through the Southern Oregon University Foundation, Pittsburgh Foundation and Oregon Community Foundation They also volunteer together, delivering meals with Food & Friends With their commitments and dedication to projects across Ashland, both Barb and Peg appreciate the ACH Foundation for its professional support of a key institution that fosters a healthy community The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the Foundation, the hospital and Ashland as a whole A committee comprising the Foundation’s stewardship committee, hospital leadership and past award recipients selects who will be honored Please join us in offering congratulations and gratitude to Barb and Peg Evans Barb and Peg support the scholarship committee and actively participate in the annual awards luncheon, meeting scholarship recipients “It’s so emotional to hear their stories and learn about the hardships they have overcome,” Barb says of the dedicated nursing students, who plan to work in the Rogue Valley Longtime supporters of the annual Patrons Campaign, the Evans sisters also champion the Foundation by attending other campaign kickoffs and celebrations The family’s connection to the Foundation started soon after Peg moved to Ashland in 1981 FOUNDATION R ECOG N I Z ES Donor gives Emergency Department a better break room THE BUSY CARE TEAM in the Asante Ashland Community Hospital Emergency Department has a newly refreshed break room that offers a comfortable space to have lunch, recharge or just enjoy a quiet moment when things get stressful Ashland Community Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and staff, hospital leaders and the Emergency Department’s staff came together on February 23 to celebrate the completion of a renovation made possible by the generosity of community member Bob Holbrook Bob has a soft spot in his heart for the staff at Asante Ashland He knows firsthand how hard caregivers work to provide compassionate, professional care to their patients His positive experiences at the hospital inspired him to make a Circle of 10 10 Circle of Caring Caring donation and partner with the Foundation on several projects that benefited the community, hospital and staff “I will never forget the quality of care that I received during my various contacts with AACH as a patient and especially the feeling of being welcomed by a staff whose primary concern was my health and well-being,” Bob said. “My current support reflects the gratitude I feel for the memory of these past experiences So, while I am happy to have you thank me, the thanks are really due to those who cared for me when I needed their help.” 201 S E M I N A R S Tax Reform & You: Making Sense of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act in 2018 ARE YOU WONDERING HOW the new tax laws will impact you?
