Contact: Suzen Chu 510-390-1624 suzen.chu@aimsk12.org FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 11/18/20 AIMS College Prep High School Receives Statewide Recognition in Race to Submit Campaign AIMS HS is one of 24 high schools in the state to receive this honor OAKLAND, CA AIMS College Prep High School (AIMS HS) is one of 24 high schools across the state to be recognized in the 2020 Race to Submit Campaign Every year the California Department of Education’s California Student Aid Commission recognizes schools with the highest completion rates of Financial Aid (FAFSA) or CA Dream Act applications AIMS HS is the only school in Oakland, and one of three schools in the Bay Area, to receive this year’s honor For the 2020-21 academic year, the AIMS Class of 2020 completed the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application and submitted their GPA’s at a rate of 114% Additionally, 68% of AIMS students received Cal grant awards Although honorees are typically invited to celebrate at the California state capitol, this year’s ceremony was held virtually during the 2020 College Affordability Summit AIMS Head of High School Maurice Williams and AIMS College and Career Coordinator, Matthew Gordan, were both in attendance to accept the award on behalf of the AIMS school community “This year, to help expand upon our mission of college attainment and success for all, we’ve added a required College Planning course for our seniors to help with their college, scholarship, and FAFSA applications, as well as their essay writing By providing wrap-around support and continuous feedback to our scholars, we hope that AIMS HS can serve as a model for all schools to ensure that students - including our most economically vulnerable - are poised for success.” - Head of AIMS High School, Maurice Williams College access and readiness is an integral part of AIMS HS’s mission On top of providing top AP courses for all students, beginning in their Freshman year, AIMS HS supports students and families by covering the costs of SAT and ACT exams, AP test prep books and exams, and college application fees for all seniors 100% of AIMS HS students graduate meeting A-G requirements that are required for students to become UC & CSU eligible FAFSA completion is an important component of college access and readiness AIMS HS serves a student population that qualifies for free and reduced lunch at a rate of 77% Yet they are breaking every barrier that has traditionally kept low-income students from reaching their college aspirations Every year 100% of AIMS HS graduates are accepted into top colleges and universities across the nation, such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Yale, Columbia, NYU, Howard University, Morehouse College, and more AIMS K-12 College Prep Charter District cultivates a community of diverse learners who achieve academic excellence Our commitment to high expectations, attendance, academic achievement, and character development results in our students being prepared for lifelong success Learn more at aimsk12.org ###
