Kyoto International University Academy kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp June - July 2019 MS/HS SPORTS DAY On Saturday, June 15th, KIU Academy will be having its annual joint Middle-High School Sports Day event at Yamashiro kinrosya fukushi kaikan in Ide-cho (Ide Gym) It will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to celebrate the strengths God has given us The Sports Day will be a whole day event, and all students are required to come to school by 8:40 AM After the event finishes, students will be driven back to school by bus around 4:30 PM Since this year’s Sports Day is on Saturday, the following Monday, June 17th, is going to be a substitute holiday for MS and HS On the day please remember that: ● ● ● ● Students must bring gym shoes (wearing street shoes, slippers, and going barefoot is not allowed) Students should, as much as possible, wear a shirt of their team color Students should bring their own lunch and a water bottle If parents want to pick their children up at the gym, please contact the homeroom teacher in advance Parents are welcome to attend If you can come along, please come and support our annual event KIU Academy Mission Statement: To provide, from a Biblical perspective, a safe, nurturing environment where students can develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, and an academically challenging environment where students can potentially become people of academic excellence Vision Statement: To be the leader in quality bilingual education based on Christian principles Kyoto International University Academy kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp ELEMENTARY BARBECUE UPDATE TO WEATHER WARNINGS & SCHOOL CLOSINGS On April 12, the first Friday of the new school year, the elementary school students went to a sports ground near Taisho Lake in the mountains of Ide-cho for a barbecue The weather was beautiful After enjoying a sausage lunch and roasting marshmallows, students enjoyed hiking to the lake or playing sports at the ground It was a wonderful way to celebrate the beginning of the new year together We would like to remind you of our closure policy On p 26 of the new Parent-Student Handbook it states, “Classes will be cancelled if there is a severe weather warning (keihoh) for KYOTANABE CITY at 7:00 AM.” If students leave home before 7:00 AM, it is up to the parents to decide if they should come to school that day Students who come to school during a school closure will either go home by themselves (if able to so) or remain at school until an arrangement with a parent/guardian is made Students should not come to school if there is a severe weather warning in their residence’s area TUITION ASSISTANCE SYSTEM FROM THE ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT (grades 10-12): The period for applications (new applications and renewals) to receive the national tuition assistance is about to begin To that end, parents need to submit the required documents to the school accounting office (Income statement In the case of a new application, the Petition for Recognition is also required) Families in which the yearly income (both parents’ income added together) does not exceed 9,100,000 yen are eligible to apply The school accountant (Mr Nakai) will be mailing the details to parents around late June Please contact Mr Nakai if you have any questions HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC PERFORMANCES Middle and high school music students have been working hard this term We have scheduled a short performance time at the end of this term for students to present what they have learned The performance will take place on Monday, June 24th from 2:45 to 3:30 PM in the basement of A building Parents / guardians are welcome If you have time, please come and support our young musicians! CLEARING OUT THE LOST AND FOUND Items taken to the lost & found storage(1F of B building ) can be claimed by students or parents and guardians every day until 17:30 Items left in the lost & found by the end of the semester will be disposed of Please encourage your children to search for items that they may have lost NEW STUDENT APPLICATION PROCESS Siblings of current students who wish to apply to enter 1st grade next year, please follow this application process for admission: Start of Application Period: July 1, 2019 (Monday) Interviews: Last week of August (tentative) Please contact the office for more information and the application form You can also download materials from the school web page SUMMER COURSES (MS & HS) We are preparing classes for the summer break These are the activities and dates: ● ● June - July 2019 TOEFL Intensive course, July 15 - 26 at KIU Academy for MS / HS SAT Intensive courses (Math, Critical Reading and Biology), July 15 - 26 at KIU Academy for high school students http://kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp/en/05requirements/applic ation.html Kyoto International University Academy kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp June - July 2019 KIUA Students gave presentations at Ritsumeikan University On April 25th 2019, two of our high school students, Sakurako Oda and Hana Bourdelais, were given a very special opportunity to give presentations to a university class at the prestigious Ritsumeikan University University instructor Sue Willis invited the KIUA students to give presentations at her “Cultural Understanding” course (for 2nd year university students) Both Sakurako and Hana had previously given the same presentations in March 2019 for their KIUA English Elective Class The title of Sakurako’s presentation was “Absolute Truth: What is Truth?” and the title of Hana’s presentation was "The Image of Humanity: The difference the strength of logic can make" from the audience The questions university students had prepared were thought-provoking and the responses that both KIUA students gave were very insightful Of course, everything was conducted in English It was a mutually beneficial learning experience for the Ritsumeikan University students and the KIUA high school students Instructor Sue Willis thought that our students’ analysis papers and presentations would help prepare her students for their future studies of worldviews In addition, she thought that it would be an exciting opportunity for our two high school students to give presentations at the renowned university This also gave us an opportunity to show the type of education that students can receive at KIUA Thank you, Sakurako Oda and Hana Bourdelais, for doing an excellent job in representing our school with your public speaking skills! Both presentations were based on analysis papers on the same theses that Sakurako and Hana had written for their HS Elective class Out of the 25 students in the audience, half of the class had already read Sakurako’s analysis paper, and the other half had read Hana’s analysis paper After their presentations were given, there was a Q & A period where Sakurako and Hana had to answer questions KIUA Admissions Seminar On Saturday, June 22, KIU Academy will be hosting an explanatory meeting for families seeking admission to the school Starting at 10:00, there will be a presentation for families who are interested in enrolling their children in KIU Academy (in the 2nd floor of “C” building) The school’s Educational Philosophy and Admissions Criteria will be explained If you know anyone who is interested, please invite them to attend For more information, please contact Ms Haruyo Yamamoto at 0774-64-0804 Kyoto International University Academy kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp June - July 2019 Elementary teacher’s aide Meg Hutton is a graduate of KIU Academy who recently finished college in the USA and returned to Japan At the end of May, she started working part time at KIUA as a teacher’s aide, mainly with first grade classes We are glad to have Meg working with us and appreciate her help UNIVERSITY CORNER Welcome back Dr Michel Mestre! Dr Michel Mestre is coming back to KIU to teach an intensive course on Marketing this spring from June 12 - 26 We are blessed to welcome Dr Mestre, who will share not only his knowledge but also his experience working with international business groups in Japan Besides teaching business courses at KIU, he has experience in leading international business seminars for Christian businessmen in the Kansai area During his previous visit, he invited the owner of Family Mart to give a talk about his business and brought students to Matsushita Museum for a field trip Yuhei Masuda has been accepted by California Lutheran University Yuhei Masuda received his Associate of Liberal Arts degree from KIU in March 2019 He is also the recipient of KIU Foundations Program Awards for English (2018), Business (2019) and Humanities (2019) Yuhei has been accepted as a transfer student to California Lutheran University (CLU) and will start studying there in the fall of 2019 He will be able to transfer at least 70 credits (more credits are still in the transferring process) and thus he could skip the first two years His academic achievements allowed him to receive a scholarship of $20,000 per year Pursuing his dream to build his own IT company, Yuhei is planning to take Computer Science as his major and Business as his minor Congratulations, Yuhei!
