[Type text] NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - October 30, 2018 ArtistYear, the First National Organization Dedicated to Service Through the Arts, Receives $1.5 Million in Pennsylvania State AmeriCorps Recognition and Funding PHILADELPHIA (October 30, 2018) – ArtistYear, the recently-founded national service organization that enables artists to commit a year of service to their country, has been awarded $1.5 million in Commonwealth of Pennsylvania AmeriCorps funding over three years This is in addition to the $1.45 million ArtistYear received in 2017 via national AmeriCorps funding ArtistYear is the first national and state organization dedicated to service through the arts to receive recognition from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps and national volunteering initiatives This 2018-2019 school year, the new state AmeriCorps investment, along with the federal funding and private support, will enable 55 ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows to serve as full-time teaching artists alongside established educators in 51 federally-designated Title I schools to 11,000 non-duplicated students at least twice per-week ArtistYear is nearly tripling its service in Philadelphia, doubling in New York City’s Borough of Queens, and continuing its commitment in the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado ArtistYear, an organization born out of the traditions of service, creative excellence and expression, and obligation toward our fellow citizens, has leveraged lessons learned from a range of national-service and arts education programs to marshal a corps of Teaching Artists, ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows, to enhance and expand arts education in Title I schools ArtistYear’s mission is to develop, support, and place higher-education arts graduates across artistic disciplines at low-income schools as dedicated teaching artists, to ensure every underserved student in America has arts education through a national service arts corps Programming is designed to yield changes for students, schools, and the ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows themselves Fellows use arts education as a tool to engage low-income students more deeply in the life of their school and community, yielding increases in school attendance, improvements in student attitudes towards their peers, school, and neighborhoods, and for themselves as 21st century learners, artists, and contributing citizens ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows also support schools in becoming increasingly “arts-rich” through the life of the partnership, working with certified arts specialists to bolster a school’s art department and curricular goals, and supporting capacity-building efforts such as curriculum codification and community art partnership cultivation Through these activities and weekly professional development training, ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows develop as skilled teaching artists, effective leaders, engaged citizen-artists, and active participants in our Democracy Research shows that when children are involved in the arts, they reap significant social, academic, and personal benefits Despite the proven benefits of arts learning for vulnerable student populations, the most recent report on the state of arts education in the U.S from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that ArtistYear, first national arts service organization, receives Pennsylvania AmeriCorps recognition and funding economically disadvantaged students are far less likely to access arts instruction when compared to their more affluent peers According to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), this “Art Opportunity Gap” disproportionately affects low-income students of color and English Language Learners (ELLs) ArtistYear believes arts education is a fundamental right of all children, regardless of economic status, and is committed to the development of critical thinking, self-discipline, and civic engagement through the arts, as a key to an engaged citizenry and thriving Democracy “National service provides an opportunity to create shared cultural experiences for our citizenry, giving us stake in and responsibility to one another, our communities, and our country,” said ArtistYear Cofounder and CEO Margo Drakos “We’ve found that pairing recent arts graduates—who want to use their art for good—with fantastic teachers in low-income schools, is an effective way to increase arts education for underserved youth across America ArtistYear is honored to provide exceptional artists with the chance to tackle big challenges facing our nation through a service year.” THE ARTISTYEAR AMERICORPS FELLOWS AND PROGRAM ArtistYear AmeriCorps Fellows hold undergraduate or graduate degrees in art fields across all artistic disciplines and are highly skilled in their craft The service year provides them with an opportunity to use their art to make a difference in the lives of children, schools, to arts standards via in-school and after-school classes, including arts interventions, small group sessions for youth identified as at risk for dropout Fellows also have designated hours to help
