Bachelor of Arts in Worship and the Arts ADMISSION Admission to the Worship and the Arts major requires an interview be conducted in-person on designated interview days or online on designated interview days Interview registration is available on the Worship and the Arts page beginning mid-August “An interview only will determine your admission to this degree For additional scholarship consideration in this major, you will need to audition or submit the following portfolio materials as defined ARTS SCHOLARSHIP For arts scholarship consideration, you must audition or submit a portfolio according to concentration requirements Art & Design Concentration A digital portfolio submission is due by February 15 for arts scholarship consideration Submit a digital portfolio using the instructions below  Digital portfolio on www.crevado.com o Include ten to twenty images (jpeg or tiff) of your most successful work, primarily in the areas of drawing and design o The faculty review the work primarily on the basis of foundation level skills which show the potential for future growth and success in all areas of art and design o Examples of work in other mediums may be included to compliment drawing and design How to Create a Crevado Portfolio Visit http://www.crevado.com and click “Sign Up” at the top of the page Scroll down and click the “Choose Free!” option Complete the form with your information and click “Create My Profile.” Click “Upload” on the top right side of the page to upload each piece of art you wish to include Use the “Comments” field to include the title, dimensions, and media for each piece You may include additional information about techniques used, instructions provided if the work was an assignment, inspiration, client, commissioning body, etc Title the gallery “First Name, Student Portfolio.” When you have completed the student portfolio, click “View Your Profile” on the top right side of the screen to review your profile and confirm that everything is accurate Include your Crevado domain on the Worship Arts Application Music Concentration Upon applying to Samford University, register for a Worship Arts Admission Interview and Scholarship Audition on the Worship and the Arts page Once you apply to the university, you will have access to the Worship Arts application found in your Application Status Page Your admission interview and scholarship audition will take place on the same weekend should you choose to audition for scholarship Guitar  Perform two contrasting pieces of your choice A Classical piece is highly recommended, but not required You may play selections from Christian Contemporary, Country, Folk, Modern Worship, or Rock genres, all drawn from a sheet music publication Provide three copies of sheet music of each selection for faculty present in the audition  The auditioning faculty may check additional skills such as playing scales and arpeggios, improvising over charts, and/or performing an original composition These skills are highly recommended, but they are not required Percussion  Demonstrate two styles with a metronome (see examples in Essential Styles Book by Steve Houghton; Groove Essentials by Tommy Igoe): Pop/Rock, Ballad (with brushes)  Demonstrate trading/soloing within an established groove using a metronome (see examples in The Drumset Soloist by Steve Houghton, Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley, Groove Essentials by Tommy Igoe, Muy Caliente by Rebecca Mauleon)  Perform timpani and/or mallet selections This ability is highly recommended, but not required (If you have four-mallet experience, it is recommended that you perform a selection that demonstrates this ability, though this ability is not required.)  Bring your own sticks, brushes, and/or mallets as well as three copies of sheet music of timpani and mallet selections for faculty, if applicable Piano  Perform two contrasting pieces of your choice A Classical piece such as a Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or twentieth century classical work or virtuosic hymn arrangement is highly recommended, but not required You may play selections from Blues, Christian Contemporary, Country, Folk, Gospel, Jazz, Modern Worship, R&B, or Rock genres, all of which should be drawn from a sheet music publication or chord chart rendition of the work  Realize a lead sheet provided by the auditioning faculty  The auditioning faculty may check additional skills such as playing scales and arpeggios, improvising over charts, and/or performing an original composition These skills are highly recommended, but not required Voice  Perform two contrasting pieces of your choice A Classical piece such as an art song in a foreign language, a hymn arrangement with a notated piano accompaniment, or “The Lord’s Prayer” by Malotte are highly recommended, but not required The second piece should be a hymn arrangement, a worship song, or a selection from the Christian Contemporary Music repertoire  Submit sheet music for your accompanist with appropriate markings as a PDF to arts@samford.edu no later than two weeks prior to your audition date Remember, settings of hymns, worship songs, and/or Christian contemporary music must have a notated melody line as well as supplied chords from a lead sheet or a notated piano accompaniment  Complete a musicianship test during the audition that includes tonal memory exercises and vocal range check Theatre Concentration Upon applying to Samford University, register for a Worship Arts Admission Interview and Scholarship Audition on the Worship and the Arts page Once you apply to the university, you will have access to the Worship Arts application found in your Application Status Page Your admission interview and scholarship audition will take place on the same weekend should you choose to audition for scholarship Acting and Directing Emphasis Perform two contrasting monologues Preference is for one contemporary or classical monologue, and a performance of a biblical text, each from memory Each monologue should be one to two minutes in length You may receive direction following the initial performance and be asked to perform portions of the monologues again Design and Technology Submit a link to a digital portfolio in PowerPoint to a sharing service (i.e Google Drive, Drop Box) that is accessible online A digital portfolio may include no more than twelve of the following: 1) photos and research for realized projects produced for school, community, or church-based projects including final drawings and rough sketches 2) prompt books and schedules (stage management) 3) technical drawings and plans 4) lighting plots 5) audio files (sound design) 6) costume sketches 7) items from art and music courses Each work example should note the title of the production, author, venue, year of production and your role in the production Film Production Concentration Submissions are due by February 15 for arts scholarship consideration Once you apply to the university, you will have access to the Worship Arts application found in your Application Status Page Upon applying to Samford University, register for a Worship Arts Admission Interview on the Worship and the Arts page Your admission interview is separate from your scholarship portfolio submission  Copy/paste an online link to an original film or video in the Worship Arts application This can be live action, fiction, experimental, documentary or animation Submission can be up to ten-minutes total running time and may include several short pieces (consider using YouTube with appropriate privacy settings or Dropbox)  Copy/paste a link a sequence of ten to fifteen still images on any subject, which has a through narrative in the Worship Arts application Journalism and Mass Communication Concentration Submissions are due by February 15 for arts scholarship consideration Once you apply to the university, you will have access to the Worship Arts application found in your Application Status Page Upon applying to Samford University, register for a Worship Arts Admission Interview on the Worship and the Arts page Your admission interview is separate from your scholarship portfolio submission    Upload a PDF or Word document in the Worship Arts application of no more than six pages of original creative writing consisting of either a short story, film script, or stage play Materials created for worship contexts are encouraged Create a digital portfolio on www.crevado.com Include no more than twelve Recruiter directly for the pre-approved 90 second clips Wear the following dance attire: Women: Solid leg, tights and ballet shoes or jazz shoes Men: Solid shirt, form fitting pants and ballet shoes or jazz shoes
