TOGETHER WE RISE Rainier Scholars Annual Report | 2017–2018 Photo: Seattle Academy HOLDING THE VISION L ast month, I had one of those powerful moments which drives home the essence of what Rainier Scholars is all about I met a Rainier Scholars alumna for breakfast during her visit home, in which she was bringing her husband and infant son to meet family and friends in the Seattle area This young woman stated her goal over 15 years ago when she started Rainier Scholars: to become a doctor and practice medicine back in her home community, serving those with limited access to high-quality health care She knew that journey well from her own life story, and was determined to use her own educational opportunity to make an impact ‘‘I work in a place where dreams have the opportunity to be realized.’’ Fast forward to 2018 and this scholar, now in her mid-20’s, is on the precipice of realizing that dream With her own hard work matched by access and opportunity provided by Rainier Scholars, South Seattle will soon be able to welcome this doctor back to town, and patients throughout the neighborhood will benefit from her expertise, compassion and care A full circle moment for both herself and the community When people ask what I for a living, I want to say quite simply, “I work in a place where dreams have the opportunity to be realized.” I thank each and every one of you who help make these dreams of so many hundreds of young people a reality On behalf of those here at home and afar who benefit from the presence of our scholars – thank you Sarah Smith | Executive MISSION Rainier Scholars cultivates the academic potential and leadership skills of hard-working, low-income students of color By creating access to transformative educational opportunities and providing comprehensive support to scholars and families, we increase college graduation rates and empower new generations of leaders OUR CHALLENGE Never before has it been so difficult for a young person to rise above the economic class and life circumstances into which he or she was born It is sobering to realize that only 8-16% of lower-income students will earn a college degree by age 25 and that within that group, Black and Latino students are 2-3 times less likely to become college graduates For those who are the first in their family to earn a college degree, the odds are even greater Rainier Scholars is committed to addressing this critical issue OUR MEASURES OF SUCCESS IN 2017–2018: 98% of scholars achieved placement on college prep pathways 97% of scholars matriculated to 4-year colleges or universities 93% of scholars who matriculated have graduated or are on track to graduate with a 4-year degree 14-MONTH ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT ENRICHMENT 5TH 6TH GRADE GRADE LEADERSHIP
