Student Activities & Involvement Benchmarking Study Spring 2012 The NASPA Assessment & Knowledge Consortium is a collection of assessment instruments powered by Campus Labs focused on key areas within Student Affairs Participating campuses can select up to four assessments to administer during an academic year Consortium studies are designed to provide colleges and universities with actionable campus-specific and benchmarking data to shape and enhance programming inside and outside the classroom Consortium members have access to a secure assessment portal to view, analyze, and share study results Asessment Areas Include Profile of the College Student Experience Campus Activities Career & Professional Aspirations Fraternity & Sorority Life Mental Health Counseling Orientation Recreation & Wellness Residence Life Student Conduct Student Union Programming The National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) advances campus activities in higher education through a business and learning partnership Members of the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA) administer conduct standards for students at institutions of higher education and recognize that a personal sense of honor sustains both individuals and their communities Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I) members believe in developing exceptional residential experiences at colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions around the world The mission of the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA) is to provide education, leadership and professional development in the fields of college student orientation, transition and retention The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) enriches its members through education, advocacy, and the delivery of services It is comprised of students and administrators whose mission is to build campus community The National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) is the leading resource for professional and student development, education, and research in collegiate recreational sports The Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) enhances its members' ability to create fraternity and sorority experiences that positively affect students, host institutions, and communities The Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) is a multi-disciplinary, member-driven, research center focused on providing accurate and up-to-date information about the mental health of today's college students in order to serve the needs of mental health providers, administrators, researchers, and the public NASPA is the leading voice for student affairs administration, policy, and practice, and affirms the commitment of the student affairs profession to educating the whole student and integrating student life and learning Campus Labs (formerly StudentVoice) provides the necessary tools to create a comprehensive, coordinated, and centralized assessment approach across an institution Student Activities & Involvement Benchmarking Study What is the Student Activities & Involvement Benchmarking Study? The Student Activities & Involvement survey instrument was designed to provide an accurate portrait of today’s college students’ experiences with campus activities and student involvement opportunities The Student Activities Benchmark is an online assessment that is administered during the spring semester or term to a sample of undergraduate students The assessment provides actionable data on: preferred means to find out about campus activities; student participation in various campus activities, including their level of involvement and whether they hold leadership positions; outcomes of participating in campus activities; and, reasons for not participating in campus activities In addition to institution-specific data, institutions administering this survey have access to national and peer comparison benchmarking data Survey Methodology The survey sample was a random sample of 3750 currently enrolled UNCG undergraduate students The survey was sent via email on February 9th, 2012 Students received two reminders to respond and the survey was closed on February 27th, 2012 No incentives for filling out the survey were provided The response rate was approximately 8.4% (N=316) Typically, response rates at UNCG average between 10%12% on surveys administered electronically Fall 2011 resident headcount enrollment was 17,102 (15,841 FTE), including 14,116 (13,462 FTE) undergraduates and 2,986 (2,379 FTE) graduate students Eightyeight percent (12,899) of undergraduate and 38% (1,359) of graduate students were enrolled on a full-time basis Sixty-six percent of undergraduate students were female Twenty-three percent of undergraduate and 14% of graduate students were African4 American Twenty-seven percent of undergraduate students lived in residence halls In fall 2011 the extension headcount was 1,172 (an additional 575 resident students took extension courses), making the total university student headcount 18,274 (Institutional Research, 2011 Profile) How Can the Student Activities & Involvement Study be Used? The results of the Student Activities & Involvement study can be used in a variety of ways Information from the study can be used to justify and inform campus programming efforts, demonstrate the impact of student involvement on learning outcomes, and justify the continued existence of staff and other support for student activities and involvement The project provides a better understanding of the characteristics, perceptions, and attitudes of today’s college students as they relate to campus engagement The results of this survey will help the university to better understand the engagement behaviors of students which can lead to higher retention rates, graduation rates, and improved academic and emotional well-being Information from the study may be immediately useful or may be useful in the future, but with today’s difficult economic times, justifications for and feedback about higher education programming and facilities are almost a necessity in order to justify the continuation of their funding For assistance in using and interpreting results or for any other questions relating to the survey, please contact: Dr Erin Bentrim Director, Student Affairs Assessment (336) 334-5582 e_bentri@uncg.edu Student Activities & Involvement Benchmarking Study Spring 2012 SELECT HIGHLIGHTS Campus activity offerings were a moderately or very important part of the college choice decision for 36% of the respondents, and opportunities for student organization participation were moderately or very important for 39% of participants (p 6) 30% of respondents held leadership positions in high school and 36% attended events/activities in high school (p 6), whereas 9% of respondents hold student leadership positions at UNCG and 50% attend campus events/activities (9) Weekday campus activity offerings meet the needs of 68% of respondents, and weekend campus activities meet the needs of 51% of respondents (p 7) UNCG student respondents reported less involvement in co-curricular activities than the national peers (p 9-12); however, 61% of respondents reported a desire to be more involved in campus activities (p 13) The top five reasons for respondents’ lack of involvement include: the conflict with academic obligations, inconvenient activity times, limited time/busy schedule, uncertainty about how to get involved, and a reluctance to participate alone (p 13) As a result of participating in campus activities, 56% of respondents reported interaction with faculty, 63% reported feeling a part of the campus community, and 61% reported improved satisfaction with the collegiate experience (p 14-16) A sampling of the benefits resulting from respondents’ participation in campus activities includes: improved communications skills (83%), ability to balance social activities with academic obligations (79%), improved leadership skills (78%), enhanced understanding of diverse perspectives (75%), and increased self-confidence (67%) (pp 17-21) In terms of the student activity fee, 70% reported familiarity with the activity fee, 29% reported being somewhat or very satisfied with how it is spent, and 60% reported they are extremely unlikely to support a fee increase (pp.22- 23) 85% of respondents reported that they would likely return to UNCG the following semester (p 26) Generally, how involved were you in student clubs and other activities while in high school?
