Alison Cook At CSU Libraries, we are dedicated to supporting you with high quality resources and assistance to support your degree programs This presentation will explore some of the databases, their specific functions, and demonstrate strategies to discover relevant information such as trials, evidence-based research, and subject headings We will also demonstrate methods to organize information and streamline the research process so that you can achieve and exceed in your academic endeavors with less frustration and stress ROOM STRATEGIES FOR MOTIVATION Dr Stella Michael-Makri and Dr Steven Wright The purpose of this presentation provides an opportunity to think about how we can motivate our dissertation students to reach their full potential, as this proves to be one of the most challenging aspects of chairing dissertations One of the reasons for this is that each student might need a different type of motivation, and Dissertation Chairs often have different philosophies of how to motivate students The line between “motivating” and “being pushy” can be tricky to find This presentation will: Identify three distinct examples of student motivation issues Provide an applicable strategy to address each example Discuss with participants other motivation issues they might have identified and brainstorm ideas on how to address those issues GRADUATE WRITING RETREAT 2021 Saturday, March 27th 11:00-11:50 ROOM THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS Dr Patricia Patrick Researchers may be confounded by the decision to use a theoretical or conceptual framework One issue is the notion that these are interchangeable terms, which makes them seem equivalent However, theoretical and conceptual frameworks are not the same and are by definition different ways to view the process of research development The framework the researcher chooses will scaffold and support data collection and analysis and become the crux for the argument in the discussion and implications of the published work (article or dissertation) During this hands-on workshop, I will present the frameworks, explain their differences and similarities, examine the role of a framework theory in research, present various learning theories, define how the theory shapes your thoughts about your study, and work with participants to outline a potential framework You will leave this workshop with a list of learning theories and how they examine your work from a theoretical perspective I provide learning theories and examples of applying theories to research Additionally, I will stay after the workshop to work one-on-one with those who would like to discuss and ROOM explore their research through a theoretical lens GREAT WRITERS ARE GREAT READERS Dr Clint Barineau In the words of writer Steven King, "The more you read, the less apt you are to make a fool of yourself with your pen " Proficiency in technical and scientific writing begins with proficiency in technical and scientific reading In this session, we'll discuss the importance of developing your reading skills ROOM before you sit down at your keyboard APA 6TH VS APA 7TH: NOTABLE CHANGES, REFERENCING, AND CITATION Dr Jennifer Lovelace No one likes change but after a decade, the APA Publication Manual has published a new edition anyway! This session will highlight the notable differences between the 6th and 7th editions of the APA Publication Manual Special attention will be given to the changes in the way we treat references and citations GRADUATE WRITING RETREAT 2021 Saturday, March 27th 12:00-12:50 ROOM APA STYLE FORMATTING IN MICROSOFT WORD Dr Parul Acharya This session will focus on formatting the table of contents using heading levels, list of figures and list of tables The session would help students to format the page margins & orientation, page numbers, page breaks, and section breaks Furthermore, the session will show students to insert and format a table using APA style ROOM TRANSFORMING FAILURE INTO SUCCESS Dr Alan Karass It is inevitable that every graduate student will encounter at least one failure or major setback The real challenge is figuring out how to recover, learn the necessary lessons, and move on to success In this session, Dr Karass will describe his own research and dissertation Saturday, March 27th 1:00-1:50 ROOM QUANTITATIVE METHODOLOGY Dr Parul Acharya This session will provide an overview of the quantitative research designs commonly used in social science research Causalcomparative, randomized controlled trial, quasi-experimental, and correlational research designs will be discussed Examples of research questions that can be answered through each type of quantitative design will be provided This session will also provide an overview with the common statistical models which can be used to answer the research questions based on the quantitative research resources available for a successful research experience MEET THE PRESENTERS DR PARUL ACHARYA Dr Parul Acharya is an Assistant Professor in the Teacher Education, Counseling & Leadership Department in the College of Education & Health Professions (COEHP) at Columbus State University She earned a Ph.D in Educational Statistics from University of Central Florida (UCF), Orlando, FL with majors in Quantitative Research Methods, Psychometrics, Data Analysis and Program Evaluation with minors in Statistical Computing and Data Mining She teaches graduate-level courses on research design (quantitative and mixed-methods) and statistical analysis in COEHP She serves as a Research Methodologist and Statistician on dissertation committees, and has several years experience in mentoring doctoral students in their research work She has worked in various roles and capacities for the Accountability, Assessment and Program Evaluation Department in the PK-12 school system Dr Acharya has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences with faculty and students from different academic disciplines DR CLINT BARINEAU Columbus State University Professor of Geology, Dr Clint Barineau, earned his PhD at Florida State University and has served in CSU's Department of Earth and Space Sciences since 2007 In addition to more than 25 years of teaching experience, Dr Barineau has extensive experience with scientific writing, including National Science Foundation grant proposals, 13 journal articles, and more than 40 published conference abstracts since arriving at CSU An important component of that experience has involved helping undergraduate and graduate students develop as writers by supervising more than dozen undergraduate and graduate theses and nearly dozen student-coauthored conference abstracts DR JENNIFER BROWN Dr Jennifer L Brown is an Associate Professor of Educational Foundations in the Department of Teacher Education, Leadership, and Counseling Her research interests include undergraduate retention, effective instructional strategies, mathematical anxiety, and homeschooling Dr Brown serves as the Chair of Columbus State University’s Institutional Review Board ALISON COOK Alison Cook has a Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS), University of Kentucky, and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Museum Studies She serves as the library liason for areas that include business, criminal justice, political science, and government information MEET THE PRESENTERS AMBER DEES Amber Dees is the State Authorization and Academic Compliance Coordinator at Columbus State University In that role she also serves as the university Institutional Review Board Coordinator Ms Dees holds a B.A Political Science and an M.P.A Public Administration degree from Columbus State University She is currently pursuing an Ed.D in Curriculum and Leadership from CSU MICHELLE JONES Michelle E Jones currently serves as Head of Reference Services at Columbus State University (Simon Schwob Memorial Library) She is the Education Liaison Librarian DR ALAN KARASS Dr Alan Karass is the Dean of Libraries at Columbus State University He is a graduate of Clark University (B.A., Music), Simmons College (M.S., Library and Information Science), the University of Connecticut (M.A., Historical Musicology), and the Open University (UK) (Ph.D., Ethnomusicology) As an ethnomusicologist, Alan is interested in the relationship between politics, identity, and music His research focuses on the International Festival of the Sahara in Douz, Tunisia DR HANNA LAINAS Dr Hanna Laneuskaya Lainas received her doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from University of North Carolina at Charlotte and now serves as an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at Columbus State University She is a Nationally Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor in NC and GA and has a certificate in Addictions Counseling Dr Lainas’ research interests include mindfulness interventions for anxiety; counselor wellness; ethical use of technology; experiential learning and counselor identity development; multicultural competency development; social advocacy MEET THE PRESENTERS DR JENNIFER LOVELACE Dr Jennifer Lovelace is an Assistant Professor in the Teaching, Leadership, and Counseling department at Columbus State Dr Lovelace is currently the Director of Doctoral programs and coordinates the M.Ed program in Higher Education Administration Dr Lovelace has a Master’s degree in Counseling and both a Master’s degree and Ph.D in Higher Education Administration Her research interests include graduate student retention and support, doctoral advisor training and mentoring, and writing support services DR STELLA MICHAEL-MAKRI Dr Stella Michael-Makri is an Associate Professor and serving as the Counseling Program Coordinator in the department of Teacher Education, Leadership, and Counseling She earned her doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Texas A&M University-Commerce, her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Texas Woman’s University, and her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Kennesaw State University She has been an educator for the past 14 years and has worked with students on all levels (undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral) Dr Makri has served as a thesis and dissertation chair throughout her academic career Her research interests include multicultural and diversity issues, ethical and professional development, mindfulness, wellness, and mental health recovery, grief, child development and parenting Dr Makri is also a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor, and a National Certified Counselor DR PATRICIA PATRICK Dr Patricia Patrick is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling, Foundations, and Leadership She is a research focused Fulbright Scholar (2019-2020) Her project focused on the ways Sumatran (Indonesia) Battra, native healers, passed native medicine, environmental, and ecological knowledge to the next generation She received her PhD from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Her research concentrates on the importance of communicating science to the public and the relationship between communication and science literacy She views her research through the lenses of sociocultural theory and experiential learning theory These theories well support a qualitative methodology; wherein she seeks to understand informal science learning with an emphasis on social interactions and cultural perspectives Her interest is identifying the public’s understanding of the natural world through a shared cultural understanding From 2012 to 2021, she published 24 articles, the books Preparing Informal Science Educators: Perspectives from Science Communications and Education (Springer, 2017) and Zoo Talk (Springer, 2013), and six book chapters Her work extends internationally to Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan MEET THE PRESENTERS ERICK RICHMAN Erick Richman developed his skill with editing as a student journalist while earning his bachelor’s degree in professional writing, ultimately serving two years as Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper Following his undergraduate internship with the Journal of Athletic Training and the illness of a close family member, he went on to complete a master’s degree in Exercise Science and later published his original thesis research in a leading scholarly journal He now oversees the Physical Activity and Wellness program at Columbus State University, where he aims to help students understand the complex psychological, sociological, and physiological factors that affect an individual’s lifelong health and wellness HEATHER SIGMUND Heather Sigmund is a Columbus native who studied Studio Art in Atlanta before moving to Germany for six years While abroad, Heather found her passion for yoga and has completed over 1000 hours of training in Germany, Austria, and India Currently, Heather is in the master's program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Columbus State University She hopes to pursue a career in counseling that emphasizes mindfulness and yoga practices within the framework of clinical mental health treatments DR BRIAN TYO Currently serving as the Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Education and Health Professions, Dr Tyo has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations that focus primarily on objective monitoring of physical activity, body composition, and fitness Dr Tyo has taught graduate courses in the Exercise Science program including Readings in Exercise Science, Advanced Exercise Physiology, Advanced Nutrition for Exercise and Sport, and Electrocardiography Considering student led research as a pinnacle step in the educational process, Dr Tyo encourages students to make a scholarly impact through thoughtful, methodological designs to target respected peer-reviewed journals for publication of their thesis/dissertation work MEET THE PRESENTERS CRYSTAL WOODS Crystal Woods has an M.A in English from West Georgia College (now the University of West Georgia) and has been teaching English since 1995 at several colleges and universities in Georgia and Alabama She has taught English at CSU full time since 2002 and is currently the First-Year Composition Assistant Director She is also the Turnitin.com campus administrator for CSU DR STEVEN WRIGHT Dr Steven Wright earned his M.Ed in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and his Ph.D in Counselor Education and Supervision from Auburn University Following his training, Dr Wright spent three years (2017-20) as an Assistant Professor for the University of Bridgeport’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program in Bridgeport, CT As a counselor, Steven has provided strength-based services to adult and adolescent populations at local community mental health agencies in both Alabama and Georgia, and to college students in the state of Connecticut In addition to his teaching and clinical experience, Dr Wright has had research published on subjects regarding counselor training and supervision practices He is actively involved in presenting research papers at national, regional, and state professional conferences His current line of research is focused on counselor training, specifically as it relates to multicultural development and effective practice for working with marginalized populations
