If students are accepted but not enroll, where they go? What are the demographic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds of accepted and enrolled applicants? Additionally, key information and data provided in the appendix address other research questions, such as: What are the origins of the accepted and enrolled applicants (e.g high school)? Who are the competitor universities? Which State System universities enrolled West Chester accepted applicants? National Student Clearinghouse General Findings Overall, West Chester had decreasing applications, increasing acceptances, along with increasing enrollments By comparison, the State System experienced increasing applications, increasing acceptances, but faced decreasing enrollments West Chester accepted 74 percent of its applicants in 2018 (Table 1), as compared to a State System average of 87 percent West Chester’s acceptance rate increased 10 percentage points (pp) since 2016 5% decrease Number of applications to West Chester between 2016 and 2018 Acceptances have increased 10% since 2016 13% increase Number of accepted applicants enrolled at West Chester between 2016 and 2018 74% acceptance rate Number of applications accepted by West Chester in 2018 The percentage of all applicants that are accepted has increased since 2016 In the report, the applicants were divided into four categories: Applicants accepted and enrolled at West Chester University, Applicants accepted at West Chester University and enrolled at another State System university, Applicants accepted at West Chester University and enrolled at a Non-System institution, Applicants accepted at West Chester University but not attending any institution Enrollment at an institution other than West Chester between August and November 2017 Office of Educational Intelligence sent AAE data to National Student Clearinghouse and received information as to where the applicants enrolled NSC declares that more than 3600 colleges and universities enrolling 98 percent of all students in public and private institutions in the U.S participate in NSC Page Sixty-five percent of West Chester accepted applicants enrolled at another State System university or a Non-System institution, an increase from 66 percent in 2016 (Table 2) About 53 percent of Pennsylvania applicants accepted by West Chester enrolled at a Non-System institution, compared with 76 percent of accepted Non-Pennsylvania applicants Four percent of West Chester accepted applicants did not attend any institution, a slight increase from just under percent in 2016 (Figure 1) A sampled profile7 of students who did not attend any institution indicates that more than 28 percent come from families with annual incomes of $48,000 or below Eighty-one percent of West Chester applicants were from Pennsylvania The enrollment rate for those applicants was 35 percent The largest group of out-of-state applicants came from New Jersey (13 percent) and Delaware (2 percent) Of those accepted applicants, 18 percent from New Jersey and 19 percent from Delaware enrolled at West Chester 8% increase Number of accepted applicants enrolled at another institution between 2016 and 2018 Table 2: West Chester University Accepted Applicants Accepted and Enrolled at West Chester University Accepted but Enrolled at Another State System University Accepted but Enrolled at a Non-System Institution Accepted but Not Attending an Institution Total 2016 2018 2,454 2,779 541 602 4,820 5,195 312 358 8,127 8,934 Source: State System Student Data Warehouse (SIMS), Fall Preliminary Census Data: End of the 15th day of classes; National Student Clearinghouse Financial data was not available for all accepted applicants who did not enroll This family financial background finding represents approximately 65.9 percent of accepted applicants who did not enroll Page Who Were the West Chester University Accepted Applicants?8 About 89 percent of West Chester accepted applicants had a high school GPA of 3.0 or above Of the West Chester accepted applicants who had a high school GPA of 3.0 or above and enrolled at an institution of higher education, 31 percent enrolled at West Chester University, percent enrolled at another State System university, and 62 percent enrolled at a Non-System institution Of the West Chester accepted applicants, 74 percent were White, followed by Black (9 percent), Hispanic (8 percent), Two or more races (4 percent), and Asian (3 percent) Thirty-two percent of West Chester accepted applicants had a family income of $75,000 or below About 17 percent of West Chester accepted applicants had a family income between $75,000 and $110,000 Approximately 51 percent had a family income of $110,000 or above.9 Who Were the West Chester University Enrolled Applicants? Eighty-four percent of West Chester enrolled applicants had a high school GPA of 3.0 or above Of the West Chester enrolled applicants, 76 percent were White, followed by Black (10 percent), Hispanic (7 percent), Two or more races (4 percent), and Asian (3 percent) Thirty-four percent of the West Chester enrolled applicants had a family income of $75,000 or below About 19 percent of West Chester enrolled applicants had a family income between $75,000 and $110,000 Approximately 47 percent had a family income of $110,000 or above, as compared with 54 percent of Non-System institution enrolled applicants Pennsylvania applicants to West Chester stay in PA 78% of PA accepted applicants who chose not to enroll at a State System institution enrolled elsewhere in PA 45% of non-PA accepted applicants who did not enroll at a State System institution ended up enrolling in their home states Where Did the Accepted Applicants Go? • • • • Of the top 20 Non-System competitor universities, 12 are located in Pennsylvania These 12 universities enrolled 26 percent of the West Chester accepted applicants Other State System Universities enrolled percent of West Chester accepted applicants Of all West Chester accepted applicants who enrolled at another State System university, 73 percent chose one of the five State System universities within an 86mile radius of West Chester (Bloomsburg, Millersville, Kutztown, Cheyney, and East Stroudsburg) Seventy-eight percent of the Pennsylvania resident West Chester accepted applicants who enrolled at a Non-State System institution chose an institution within Pennsylvania Forty-five percent of the Non-Pennsylvania resident West Chester accepted applicants who enrolled at a Non-State System institution chose an institution within their home state All unknown data were removed from both numerators and denominators when calculating all percentages in this report Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100 percent Income data
