report from Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society Disclaimer: This report may be a summary of content provided by the recipient, not always complete quoted material September 17, 2019 Marilyn Sheldon, Director Tulalip Tribes Charitable Contributions 8802 27th Avenue NE Tulalip, WA 98271-9694 Code: Q3 2017 14.2 Dear Marilyn and Tulalip Tribes Charitable Contributions: Thank you for the to help us offset costs of the book Re-Awakening Ancient Salish Sea Basketry to make it available to native basketweavers at about ½ price We apologize for any lateness of this evaluation report, in part since these benefits in cost offsets are still happening We hope you like the 20 copies of our book sent and we appreciated giving our talk for your Lecture Series, at the beautiful Hibulb Cultural Center, September 15, 2018 (see attached flyer and pictures of this activity below) Enclosed please find copies of: (1) our discount forms for Northwest Tribes, First Nations of Canada, and Maori of New Zealand made available through web sites and announcements at Native gatherings, especially basket weaving programs such as the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association (NNABA) and the Hazel Pete Basketweavers gatherings (see attached flyers both electronically and physically distributed, and still available (Attachment 1); (2) spread sheet of over 350 tribal members and communities taking advantage of the discounts (still happening too; Attachment 2); (3) list of Northwest libraries and college we sent gratis book copies with acknowledgement of the Tulalip grant subsidy and support in the beginning of the book (Attachment 3); and (4) a flyer and photos of Ed Carriere, Suquamish Elder and Master Basketweaver and I giving presentation at the Hibulb Cultural Center Lecture Series on September 15, 2018, as promised in proposal (Attachments 4) Your help with subsidy funds allowed the Publisher of this book, Journal of Northwest Anthropology to offer our new book, released January 1, 2018, with reduced costs per book from $54.95 to $27.50 to Native weavers throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond to Maori weavers too Page of 14 Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society We estimate over 500 books sold at the reduced price (see documentation for 354 sales) Some Tribes bought 100+, such as Ed Carriere's Suquamish Museum and the Snoqualmie Tribe The 2,000 year old baskets are from a wet site in Snoqualmie Traditional Territory, so they bought 100 books and Ed and I spoke at their Elder's Gathering where they handed them out and we signed To them it truly represents the work of their 100th grandparents We also provided 20 books to the Tulalip Tribe, and with a 1% grant from the Squaxin Tribal we sent copies to 70 libraries and colleges throughout the region (see attached list) So through this team effort (grant from Siletz Tribe of Oregon too) we made this basketry heritage volume available at a reduced price to numerous tribal members, helping to preserve this important work into the future I want to emphasize that your support truly provides the vital margin needed to make our basketry heritage work and documentation available into the future—our ultimate goal with this project My best and thanks for the years of working together Sincerely, Dale R Croes, Ph.D Executive Secretary Pacific Northwest Archaeological Society 360-789-9687 Science Re-Awakening Ancient Salish Sea Basketry Fifty Years of Basketry Studies in Culture and Science About the book The book is the result of a collaboration between Mr Ed Carriere, Suquamish Elder and Master Basketmaker, and Dr Dale Croes, Northwest archaeologist specializing in ancient basketry and excavation of Northwest Coast waterlogged sites (also known as “wet sites”) Both men have spent over 50 years of their lives exploring their mutual interest in the art of basketry Due to generous grants from Northwest Tribe Foundations, we are able to offer Māori a discounted price Journal of Northwest Anthropology Memoir 15 About the authors Re-Awakening Ancient Salish Sea Basketry: Fifty Years of Basketry Studies in Culture and Science traces the evolution of traditional basketmaking on the Northwest Coast of North America from thousands of years ago to contemporary times The book explores the lives of two basketry specialists, Ed Carriere and Dale Croes; describes their analyses of the 2,000-year-old basketry collection from the Biderbost wet site, Snoqualmie Tribal Territory, housed at the University of Washington Burke Museum Archaeology Program; describes their development of Generationally-Linked Archaeology, a new approach that connects contemporary cultural specialists with ancient and ancestral specialists through collaboration with archaeologists; and details the sharing of their efforts with cultural audiences, such as the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Association, and scientific audiences, such as the annual Northwest Anthropological Conference Ed
