programme at home and abroad preparation for higher education and the world of work The School Ibstock Place School, founded in 1894 in Kensington as one of the first kindergartens in the country and the Demonstration School of the Froebel Institute, has been located at Ibstock Place in Roehampton since 1946 It is a friendly and happy school with a distinctive atmosphere where pupils have breadth of opportunity and respect for the diversity of achievement In the younger years the School supports a local population and from the age of 11, the catchment area extends The School, occupying a ten-acre site on both sides of Clarence Lane, is divided into two departments, the Preparatory Department, 4-11 years (including the Pre-Prep, catering for children 4-6 years), and the Senior School 11-18 years Ibstock Place School is over-subscribed and there is entry on date of registration at the age of four for Kindergarten (Reception) Entry thereafter is by assessment, designed to identify those children who are able to take advantage of the Ibstock Place School experience There is a competitive entry examination at the age of eleven Prep School pupils compete with external candidates and not have rite of passage through to the Senior School Developments in the School have been significant since the opening of the Senior Department in 1976 and over the last sixteen years, construction has included a building for the Preparatory Department (Macleod House), a Sports Hall, New School, a significant building housing a new library, science laboratories and numerous classrooms and a Theatre completed in December 2015 We are currently building a new refectory Underpinning our approach to the promotion of effective learning is a belief that pupils learn best when they actively process what they are learning This approach aims to build pupils’ understanding, and teachers work continuously to develop ways to support our pupils in their endeavours In this sense, IBSTOCK PLACE SCHOOL An Introduction to the School of Art and Design The School of Art and Design In the Senior School we have a broad, Fine Art, approach and follow a curriculum where drawing and the study of Art History underpin each project Internal and external competitions are offered, including our House Art Competition where the work of pupils is selected for exhibition at the Royal College of Art and when we also raise money for charity We run a popular Lower Senior School Textiles Club and in addition to this, we have 'Open Studios' in the evenings where everyone is welcome to make use of our art rooms and staff expertise Sixth Form Life Classes take place in the Autumn Term The Faculty has three full-time teachers and two full-time technicians Art pupils and staff regularly attend art exhibitions and galleries We have artist workshops and visits for the younger pupils and arrange trips to hear internationally renowned contemporary artists speaking about their approaches to creativity Exam year pupils also benefit from Saturday workshops and revision sessions, run in the Easter holidays The School of Art and Design hosts three major exhibitions a year, ensuring that the faculty is visible to everyone connected with the School Selected artworks from the S7-9 pupils usually go on display in the Summer Term with the GCSE and Pre-U exhibitions following in quick succession Our GCSE DT pupils also exhibit their final products in our well-equipped workshops Perhaps the most intriguing and challenging exhibition of Pre-U artworks makes the most of our superb exhibition space in the Theatre Our Sixth Form pupils have gained Art Foundation places at: Kingston, Falmouth, Epsom, Brighton, Camberwell and Central St Martins Some pupils have also been successful in securing places on Architecture degree courses such as at Glasgow School of Art Others are now studying 3D Design and Architecture at Central St Martins and Mechanical and Automotive Design at Brunel University This broad range of courses reflects the faculty’s diverse and individually-tailored approach to Art education Sixth Form Arts Scholarships are available to internal and external candidates and in return, the successful pupils offer their artistic talents back to the Faculty and to the School Design and Technology at IPS Pupils study Design and Technology as part of the Lower Senior School curriculum Upper Senior pupils may opt to study Design and Technology: Resistant Materials at GCSE Design and Technology provides opportunities for pupils to create quality products through combining knowledge and understanding with designing and making skills The preparation of young people for citizenship in a technological society is central to the subject Design and Technology Facilities Design and Technology has two purpose-built workshops, which are multi-functional and well equipped with tools and machinery that include lathes, a milling machine, a heat treatment area and a laser cutter There are sixteen computer workstations in a new purpose-built desk which supports the teaching of Computer Aided Design in addition to graphics The outdoor courtyard to the rear of the Design and Technology buildings is increasingly used to display the sculpture and three-dimensional work Special Events The department also offers a range of after school clubs for all pupils, the aim of which is to broaden the technology education for all and to encourage an active interest in designing and making Pupils may choose from a range of projects that are matched to their ability Making musical instruments, in particular, the Guitar, is always a popular and oversubscribed club activity They are also encouraged to participate in national competitions GCSE pupils visit the Design Museum The annual Inter-house Stockcar Challenge takes place in the Summer Term Teams from each House, in each Lower Senior year group, race radiocontrolled cars constructed in the in the professional duties which a teacher may be required to perform under the reasonable direction of the Headmistress Main Duties To provide technical support to teaching staff and classes To adopt a flexible style in order to tackle a range of routine duties in the Design and Technology Workshops Specific Duties Ensure that all workshop and practical areas, tools, equipment, computer software (CAD CAM) and materials are kept in an operable and safe manner and ready for use by staff and pupils Prepare, provide and return tools, equipment and materials as necessary to enable staff and pupils to function effectively This must be done prior to the commencement of a lesson Set up as necessary hardware required by teachers for class demonstration or pupil use Manufacture pieces of equipment, jigs and fixtures as required by staff for class demonstration or pupil use Support lessons and work alongside teachers during designing and making activities to aid pupil progress Be available to issue materials to ensure that teachers are not side-tracked from their teaching duties when materials are to be urgently prepared Prepare materials and/or resource packs for teachers and pupils’ design based projects Construct storage systems for pupils’ work and other materials, for example, shelving arrangements Photocopy and duplicate worksheets for teachers and pupils as required Routine
