SEARCH FOR DIRECTOR MARYLAND PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH CENTER (MPRC) University of Maryland School of Medicine Baltimore, MD THE SEARCH The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC), an internationally renowned research center based at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, seeks a forward thinking, collaborative, innovative, and experienced leader/researcher to serve as its next Director MPRC’s mission is to conduct basic, clinical, and translational research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia and related disorders In leading MPRC, among a select few centers of similar focus and reputation in the world, the next Director will enjoy a unique opportunity to shape the future of a highly productive and significant research center Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, the Director leads and manages all operations and functions of MPRC while setting and executing its vision and strategy The Center is comprised of four major components, including an outpatient research program, a Treatment Research Program that includes a 24-bed inpatient unit, a neuroscience program including the Maryland Brain Collection, and the University of Maryland Center for Brain Imaging Research As a transformational leader, the next Director will preside during an important moment in MPRC’s history, as it builds upon its prominence and reputation in the field of schizophrenia and related disorders research, while improving its physical infrastructure and facilities In this role, the Director will address a set of opportunities and challenges that will impact the mission and success of the Center, including leading and managing MPRC with innovation, forward thinking, and open communication; leading MPRC’s efforts during the transition to improve its facilities and infrastructure; preserving and maintaining MPRC’s unique culture of collaboration between researchers and clinical staff; improving the Center’s culture and environment regarding diversity, equity and inclusion through hiring practices and awareness; building on the Center’s international reputation by fostering its continued growth, and University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center increasing collaboration and partnerships between MPRC and academic departments at the School of Medicine, UMB, and other external organizations The Director oversees a center comprised of 106 employees, including 24 faculty, 10 of whom are full professors, and 79 staff, and an operating budget of $15.9 million and projected revenues of $17.6 million in FY22, including $4 million of contracted support by the state The ideal candidate for the role will be an exemplary leader and strategic thinker, and an exceptional academic physician and leader with a proven ability to manage and lead a large research center The Director will also possess an excellent track record of academic scholarship and funded research, a Doctor of Medicine degree, plus board certification in Psychiatry and fellowship trained or demonstrate equivalent expertise It is expected that the selected candidate will meet the criteria for appointment as Professor, with Tenure The Director will bring a collaborative leadership style with a commitment to integrating research at MPRC with the UMB Department of Psychiatry, as President for Medical Affairs and the John Z and Akiko K Bowers Distinguished Professor He is also professor in the departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medicine, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology He is a member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Originally from Jamaica, West Indies, Dr Reece completed a Bachelor of Science degree with honors (Magna Cum Laude) from Long Island University; a M.D degree from New York University School of Medicine; a Ph.D degree in biochemistry from the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica; and a MBA degree from the Fox School of Business & Management of Temple University He completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, and a postdoctoral fellowship in University of Maryland In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he is actively involved in research and education His research focuses on diabetes in pregnancy, birth defects and prenatal diagnosis He directs an NIH multi-million-dollar research laboratory group studying the bio-molecular mechanisms of diabetes-induced birth defects He is a sought-after Visiting Professor and Lecturer at numerous institutions both nationally and internationally and has published extensively in the scientific literature: 12 books including revisions; monographs; and more than 500 articles, chapters, and abstracts He recently served as Chair of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges He has received numerous special recognitions and awards including the Distinguished Loma Linda University Dr Jill RachBeisel is the Dr Irving J Taylor Professor and Chair, Department of Psychiatry Dr RachBeisel was appointed as permanent chair of the department in early 2021 Prior to that she served as Interim Chair from 2019-2021 and a short stint as Acting Chair in 2008 A faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry since 1989, Dr RachBeisel has provided clinical, teaching, research collaboration, and administrative leadership over the past 24 years Dr RachBeisel began her career in the field of acute psychiatric care, emergency psychiatric interventions and quality management in the hospital setting From 1999 through 2016 she served as the Division Director for Community Psychiatry at the University of Maryland, overseeing 200 staff & physicians, providing community mental health services through four major programs: Traditional Clinic Program, Case Management Services, Psychiatry Rehabilitation Services and Programs of Assertive Community Treatment University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center During her tenure in this position, she developed a skills-based teaching program for individuals with SMI living in supervised transitional housing Her curriculum, “Academy of Independent Living,” is designed to prepare persons with SMI to live independently In addition to her division responsibilities, Dr RachBeisel was promoted to Chief of Clinical Services for the Department of Psychiatry on March 1, 2014, assuming the oversight, including program development & Performance Improvement, of all clinical services in the Department of Psychiatry She is actively involved in understanding the impact of Population Health Management on persons with SMI as well as mental health issues in complex medical/surgical conditions THE MARYLAND PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH CENTER The Maryland Psychiatric Research Center (MPRC) is an internationally renowned research center dedicated to conducting basic, clinical, and translational research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia and related disorders, as a partnership between the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Maryland Department of Health The Center is located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville, MD, about 8.5 miles from the downtown UMB campus MPRC is comprised of an outpatient research program; a treatment research program that includes a 24-bed inpatient unit; a neuroscience program including the Maryland Brain Collection; the First Episode Clinic; the University of Maryland Center for Brain Imaging Research; and a research pharmacy MPRC’s personnel includes 24 faculty (of which 10 are full professors), post-doctoral fellows, and a staff of 79 The Center’s 2022 budget includes projected overall expenses of $15.9 million, and projected revenue of $17.6 million, which includes $11.6 million in grants and contracts, and approximately $4 million from a fixed state contract Faculty and researchers are engaged in significant research areas at the Center, including the following major topics: neuroimaging, including reward system functioning, predictive coding, social cognition, brain circuitry/stress, and white matter integrity; advanced analytic approaches for examining the relationships between the genome and brain imaging measures; cognitive and affective neuroscience, involving predictive learning/reward, attention/working memory, and nicotine and cognition; and basic neuroscience, including gut microbiota/brain axis and stress/development of PTSD and other anxiety disorders The Center is also engaged in numerous clinical trials including studies related to Clozapine, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), and neuroinflammation MPRC faculty have 40 active grants and contracts including 24 NIH grants for a total award amount of $60 million The Center’s NIH 2021 total grant revenue exceeded $9.6 million The MPRC faculty are extensively involved in medical student, resident, graduate, and fellow/post-graduate training MPRC was also recently awarded its third competitive renewal of a T32 training grant, “Multidisciplinary Schizophrenia and Psychosis-related Training.” The fiveyear program prepares MD’s, PhD’s and PharmD’s for a career in translational mental health research University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center University of Maryland Center for Brain Imaging Research (CBIR) The MPRC has a long history of conducting structural and functional neuroimaging research, developing a critical density of researchers in this area As a result, the Center created a stateof-the-art imaging center which serves as the home for the Center for Brain Imaging Research (CBIR) The CBIR was established in 2012 in collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and features an advanced MRI scanner, and a PRISMA upgrade which allows for rapid data collection with improved resolution, fostering competitive applications for new NIH/NIMH funding opportunities research The CBIR is staffed by a full-time MR operator, a full-time MR physicist, and a full-time imaging center manager, and fosters extensive collaborations with other institutions examining the relationships between the genome and brain imaging measures Maryland Early Intervention Program The Maryland Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a collaborative effort among several centers, including the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry’s Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, National Center for School Mental Health, Psychology, and Psychiatric Services Research; the University of Maryland Medical System’s Divisions of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Community Psychiatry; and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Department of Psychology This program was established in 2013 in part by funding from Maryland's Department of Health Over time, the Program has established a comprehensive, statewide program with clinical services provided by these University of Maryland centers and divisions as well as by satellite sites across the state The EIP offers specialized programs with expertise in the early identification, evaluation, and comprehensive psychiatric treatment of adolescents and young adults at risk for, or in the early stages of, a mental illness with psychosis The EIP uses an integrated approach to addressing the health and mental health needs of young adults, including providing support for co-occurring substance use disorders, metabolic risks, and other co-occurring medical conditions The EIP is comprised of three components: Outreach and education services, clinical services, and training and implementation support services Research is integrated into each of these components, focusing on early detection of disease emergence; prediction of progress and recovery; and treatment development MPRC Clinical Involvement A defining and unique aspect of MPRC’s clinical involvement can be found in the work of the Treatment Research Program (TRP) The TRP is a joint venture between Spring Grove Hospital Center and the MPRC, featuring a 24-bed inpatient unit, and both clinical and research staff The TRP has been dedicated to the study and treatment of people with schizophrenia since 1989, incorporating a diverse range of treatment relevant research and provides numerous University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center opportunities including clinical trials of new medications and strategies to help move people with schizophrenia on the path to recovery The TRP has had over 40 funded grants and contracts with over $25 million in funding The program’s achievements include testing of many novel antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia, advances in women’s health research, breaking barriers and establishing efficacy and safety with clozapine, improving health related outcomes in schizophrenia, and revealing the therapeutic implications of gluten sensitivity in schizophrenia TRP faculty have had over 350 publications, over 40 books and book chapters In addition to the TRP, MPRC operates an Outpatient Research Program Clinic, serving approximately 100 patients with schizophrenia and related disorders, and a First Episode Clinic The two outpatient clinics are a major source of participants for the Center’s clinical research studies Facilities The MPRC is currently located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital Center and occupies portions of four buildings and over 56,000 square feet of office and laboratory space The Hill Building houses the Outpatient Treatment Program (ORP) and the Neuroscience Program The ORP occupies two floors and includes patient areas, counseling rooms, testing labs, conference areas, faculty and staff offices, and a pharmacy The Neuroscience Program occupies three floors of the Hill Building and contains laboratory space, large equipment, conference areas, animal housing and staff/faculty office space The adjacent Annex Building has space for animal housing and laboratories The Cottage across the street from the Research Building has additional testing labs and houses our administrative/finance staff The MPRC’s Treatment Research Program (TRP) and Neuroimaging Program (NRP) are in the Tawes Building The TRP occupies one floor which includes a nurse station, patient and conference areas and staff/faculty offices The NRP occupies portions of three floors in the Tawes Building and has patient testing labs, counseling rooms, office space and patient common areas The adjacent MRI Building contains a 3T PRISMA scanner, as well as offices for faculty and technicians The School of Medicine leadership is currently working through space scenarios which would relocate a majority of the MPRC programs to the downtown Baltimore UMB campus This transition will be phased over 12 – 18 months once a plan is finalized and approved The next Director should expect to be initially located on the Spring Grove campus Ultimately, MPRC may continue occupying a small presence on the Spring Grove Hospital campus for continuity of the study programs related to inpatients ROLE OF THE DIRECTOR Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, the Director leads and manages all operations and functions of MPRC while setting and executing its vision and strategy The Director oversees a center comprised of 106 employees, including 24 University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center faculty and 10 full professors, and 79 staff, and an operating budget of $15.9 million and projected revenues of $17.6 million in FY22, including $4 million of contracted support by the state The Director interacts with all members of the Center staff, including senior and junior faculty, researchers and research assistants, and administrative staff The Director will also be expected to foster collaboration with colleagues and leadership at the School of Medicine, and in particular, the Department of Psychiatry which shares common research interests The next Director will also provide leadership in establishing greater diversity, equity, and inclusion at MPRC, ensuring that Center policies, processes, and practices are equitable and consistent with UMB’s core values The Director will also collaborate with the School’s Assistant Dean for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion and UMB’s Chief DEI Officer and Vice President to develop DEI initiatives for the Center and its recruitment As the public face of MPRC, the Director will also be expected to promote the Center’s research activities externally to potential funders and prospective faculty who may be recruited to join Thus, possessing knowledge of all operational and academic functions of Center successful candidate will bring significant experience in leading an academic unit or center, and an accomplished record of relevant scholarship, to join with the ability to collaborate with key stakeholders across the School of Medicine and UMB To this end, the next Director can expect to address the following key opportunities and challenges: Lead and manage MPRC with innovation, forward thinking and open communication A central goal for the new Director will be to determine the vision to guide an internationally renowned research center as it enters a new era, building on its reputation of high quality and independence, collaboration, and success The new Director will bring a deep understanding of basic science and research along with a clinical orientation to maintain the priority of keeping MPRC’s clinical work going, central to its research productivity The Director will also be a skillful manager and administrator who possess financial acumen and an entrepreneurial spirit to securing new grants, contracts, and funds An excellent communicator, the Director will relate to senior faculty of prominence and junior faculty of promise, administrative staff, and research assistants, leading all in the common purpose of a shared mission Lead MPRC’s efforts during the transition to improve its facilities and infrastructure This is an important and unique moment in MPRC’s history regarding its physical space As the Center considers and plans for an eventual move to the downtown UMB campus, the Director University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, well, drawing on in-patient and outpatient programs to contribute to its clinical trials As MPRC moves into a new phase of its existence, it will be vital to protect and foster this unique culture, will bring people together behind the shared goals and mission of the Center Build on the Center’s international reputation by fostering its continued growth The new Director will seek to promote MPRC’s established research while developing new areas of compelling work that address the problems of our times By attracting new faculty and researchers, the Director will help to address the anticipated retirements of an aging faculty In all respects, the Director will be in a critical position to foster an understanding of the core mission of the Center, to further the basic, clinical, and translational research on the treatment of schizophrenia and related disorders Increase collaboration and partnerships between MPRC and academic departments at the School of Medicine, UMB, and other external organizations Maintaining and building on MPRC’s strong connection to the Department of Psychiatry and other academic departments at the School of Medicine will be of paramount importance for the new Director The Director will seek to strengthen ties with basic science and clinical departments at UMB’s main downtown campus, where creative collaboration with MPRC can produce exciting results Externally, the Director will foster new connections with academic, clinical, and administrative partners to further the mission and goals of the Center As the University of Maryland School of Medicine Director, Maryland Psychiatric Research Center spokesperson and face of the Center, the Director will be a key representative, increasing its visibility and communicating its purpose to a wide audience PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for the role of Director, MPRC will be a collaborative leader and strategic thinker who can articulate a vision and inspire staff This individual should have strong interpersonal skills with an ability to deal effectively with all levels of faculty, researchers, and staff, as well as stakeholders in various University community and outside organizations While no one person will likely embody all the professional qualifications, skills, experiences, and personal qualities desirable in this role, the ideal
