Curriculum Statement of Intent Our aim is to provide our children with an engaging, exciting and empowering curriculum that equips them for today and tomorrow in an ever-changing society At Heritage High School, the curriculum is designed to: recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers Every child is recognised as a unique individual We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of skills, knowledge, concepts and values with a vision to prepare them for life beyond school We constantly provide enrichment opportunities to engage learning We believe that our school should be happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives, where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge We promote the Heritage Values (Pride, Ambition, and Aspiration) to promote positive attitudes to learning which reflect the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future success Community involvement is an integral part of our curriculum, inviting visitors to facilitate the learning of new skills, the sharing of experiences through assemblies and promoting curriculum outcomes Children leave Heritage High School with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners Heritage High School Statement of intent English—Statement of Intent To develop our students as inquisitive, critical and empathetic readers as well as articulate and effective communicators in writing and speech Maths—Statement of Intent We aim to develop skills and processes to use maths within everyday life Students will be provided with challenge and choice in their learning to see the development of confidence, a willingness to learn and interest in the various aspects of mathematics Mathematical experiences should allow for independence with opportunity to grapple with problems and persevere in challenge, hence, creating resilient learners Science—Statement of Intent To develop student’s knowledge and understanding of science through scientific enquiry; enhancing student’s interpersonal skills and teamwork, building resilience in learners and allowing them to become critical and creative thinkers, for life after school, in our ever changing technological world Humanities and Languages—Statement of Intent History—To develop students understanding of our past, our place in the world and why different ideas and values are important in shaping our future We develop student’s skills and knowledge so that they can better analyse the world around them, critically evaluate sources of information and become effective independent thinkers Geography—To create curiosity of the world around us Learners will understand their place in the world around them and be able to form evidence based opinions of geographical issues Languages—To continually develop linguistic standards through an engaging and ever more challenging curriculum To develop a passion for languages which in turn have ability to unlock opportunities for our pupils in the world of work, and to enhance their employability skills Promoting cultural awareness and embracing respect for people as global citizens Travel and Tourism—To develop learners in understanding the opportunities within the world marketplace, utilising a rich variety of experiences that promote foreign and domestic travel Students have an appreciation of how they can have a positive impact on the tourism industry and the benefits it can bring to a local, national and international world RE—Deciding who I want to be through studying what others believe ICT and Computing—Statement of Intent To develop students to be competent and safe IT users and be digitally literate, by creating opportunities to understand what ICT is and how technology impacts on students’ lives and society Performance—Statement of Intent Physical Education—To develop confident, resilient performers built on a foundation of teamwork, skills and knowledge Students have an appreciation of the benefits sport brings to health and wellbeing Performing Arts—To provide learners with the knowledge and range of skills needed to progress them towards being able to operate successfully as creative, competent, interpersonal and confident performers and directors Creative – Statement of Intent The Creative faculty offer inspiring, rigorous and practical subjects It is our intent to provide our students with the core skills and qualities required for them to be successful learners in the classroom as well as equip them for the wider world of work Our students demonstrate independent problem solving skills with an emphasis on resilience in order to design and develop relevant responses, considering their own and other’s needs, wants and values
