What are the characteristics of the patient or problem that should be considered? I: What is the intervention that is being considered? C: What comparison or control condition is being considered? This component is most relevant when comparing two interventions O: What are the outcomes of interest? What measurements are being used to measure the effectiveness of the intervention? **Review notes from DPT 721 on writing a PICO paper (posted on Blackboard) Assignment: Consider the interventions that have been implemented with the patient Determine how these should be modified, or whether a new intervention may be more beneficial Write a PICO question that will help with this clinical decision Summarize the clinic patient’s current status as it relates to the PICO question, using outcome measures that are consistent with those used in the initial examination Perform a literature search and describe the search strategy Include keywords used, databases searched and number of articles found; describe how the search was narrowed List relevant references that use the highest levels of evidence (RCT, systematic review) possible Subjects in the studies chosen should be similar to the clinic patient (same level of chronicity, age and function) if possible Summarize the evidence from # 4, emphasizing the intervention details (usually found in the “Methods”) Prioritize intervention that is applicable in our clinic setting (i.e., days/week, 10-12 weeks) Briefly state the findings of each of the studies and the level of evidence of the study Write a paragraph defending a decision about whether this new intervention is appropriate for the clinic patient Include any concerns or precautions that should be taken in applying this intervention Patient Preference: will this new intervention meet the patient’s needs and goals? Clinical Circumstances: comment on whether the resources needed to apply this intervention are available in our clinic 13 Methods of evaluation of student learning: See rubric below A lower score indicates that the criteria was met but with low quality, while a higher score indicates a high quality response Grading Criteria Writes question in PICO format: -‐Population being targeted -‐Intervention being considered -‐Comparison intervention -‐Outcome measures used Lists search strategy including keywords and databases searched; number of articles and how search was narrowed Lists 5 (good quality) references that are relevant to question Summarizes evidence listed above with emphasis on methods and findings Summarizes (one sentence) quality of each article Summarizes and evaluates the combined evidence of all 5 articles related to PICO question and draws conclusions Applies conclusions to clinic patient Discusses whether intervention is appropriate for clinic patient (precautions, Weight Score Comments 10 10 considerations for safe application, resources available in clinic) Applies conclusions to planned intervention and discusses how interventions will meet patient goals Organization: introduces topic clearly, smooth transition between ideas, summaries are clear and concise Grammar, syntax and spelling Citations: appropriate use of citations; AMA style for articles Comments: Total points:
