Regulations 1994 (as amended) See Annex (Policy and Legislation) for further details Species protected under UK legislation are defined as those species listed under Schedules and of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) or the Protection of Badgers Act, 1992 Species protected from sale only are excluded See Annex (Policy and Legislation) for further details LDP Ecological Site Assessments in Monmouthshire 2009 Gwent Ecology Page 197 of 203 UK or Wales Priority Species are defined as those listed as UK Biodiversity Action Plan Priority species or Section 42 Species of Principal Importance for Conserving Biological Diversity in Wales ‘Research only’ species are excluded See Annex (Policy and Legislation) for further details Monmouthshire LBAP Species are defined as those identified as LBAP Priority species in Monmouthshire’s LBAP Species listed in the biodiversity audit section of the LBAP are excluded Designated Sites The information regarding designated sites in this section was provided by MCC For further information regarding protected sites see Annex (Policy and Legislation) SINC recommendation This section indicates whether the whole site or part of the site meets the criteria for SINC designation in Guidelines for the Selection of Wildlife Sites in South East Wales The criterion under which the site qualifies is noted It should be recognised that each proposed SINC will require a detailed site form to be submitted to the SINC panel – a group of local wildlife experts, together with representatives from MCC and GE SINCs are approved and designated by the panel Habitats and Important Features UK and Wales Priority Habitats are defined as those listed as UKBAP Priority habitats or Section 42 Habitats of Principal Importance for Conserving Biological Diversity in Wales LBAP Habitats are defined using the LBAP Priority Habitats descriptions in the LDP Ecological Site Assessments in Monmouthshire 2009 Gwent Ecology Page 198 of 203 Monmouthshire LBAP as shown by the online Biodiversity Action Reporting System (BARS) Percentage cover is an estimate and should be used as a guide only Adjacent land use is indicated The Site Habitat Value Map is an extract from GIS Layer 2: Detailed areas of importance for biodiversity For clarification, sites have been labelled with the candidate site number In cases where the site adjoins or overlaps with other candidate sites, the site boundary is shown in blue Red circles indicate mature trees, veteran trees or features of nature conservation interest Please refer to the relevant GIS layer for details Designated ancient woodland is defined as ancient semi-natural woodland (ASNW) – areas that have been wooded since at least 1600 ASNW is listed on the Gwent Inventory of Ancient Woodland (Nature Conservancy Council, 1989) For more information regarding mature and veteran trees, hedgerows, and water features, please see the Annex 3, Glossary of Habitats Connectivity value is a subjective assessment based on the surrounding landscape and the presence and condition of linear features on the site For more information regarding connectivity, please see Connectivity Report LDP Ecological Site Assessments in Monmouthshire 2009 Gwent Ecology Page 199 of 203 Summary Additional surveys and assessments are listed These are based on the potential presence of protected species as detailed on pages and of the form Potential constraints are summarised, based on the findings of the desk-based assessment and field survey, as recorded in previous sections Recommendations for mitigation and enhancement are suggested These are intended as an indication only, as further survey will be needed to inform mitigation, and the design and purpose of the development will determine ecological impacts and influence mitigation and enhancement possibilities LDP Ecological Site Assessments in Monmouthshire 2009 Gwent Ecology Page 200 of 203 Annex 8: Hedgerow Classification HIGH: Species-rich containing at least five native woody species in a 30 metre sample Consider features such as banks, ditches, standing trees, ground flora associated and connecting hedges/woodland areas Four woody species are recorded and other features are considered important This would include, potential dormouse habitat MEDIUM: Less than five native woody species in a 30 metre stretch, without other features present Less than four native woody species, with other features present LOW: Less than four native woody species, without other features present Gappy hedges, newly planted Annex 7: Veteran and Mature Tree Classification HIGH: Veteran trees >3.7m circumference, 1.3m from base (to include native and non-native species) Large over-mature trees >2m circumference, or estimated to be over 200 years old, which exhibit characteristics such as dead wood, rot hollows and bracket fungi To include native and non-native species LDP Ecological Site Assessments in
