Job Description SALARIED GP Reporting to: The Practice Partners: Dr’s Marshall, Maclean, Jones & Kirkwood on clinical matters and the Business Practice Manager David Shand on administrative issues Hours of work: Seven sessions per week over five days (5 booked + on-call) plus home visits, & one week in 5, an additional Friday PM emergencies only session Contract type: Permanent position with a one year probationary period Role summary: The post-holder will manage a patient caseload and deal with a wide range of health needs in a primary care setting, ensuring the highest standards of care for all registered and temporary patients Location: Cyncoed Medical Centre (N.W Cardiff) Annual leave: Six weeks (42 sessions) pro rata annual leave Study leave: week per annum to support CPD and Appraisal Salary: c£60,000 + professional indemnity cover Other terms and conditions: As per those described in the BMA GPC ‘Focus on Salaried GPs’ document The Contract of Employment will be broadly based on BMA’s model Contract of Employment document Main purpose of the role: To support the four GP partners in the Practice to manage a busy, interesting clinical caseload The appointee will also have the opportunity to take part in leading on key disease areas (monitoring trends in treatment, staff training and prescribing) and assist in developing appropriate healthcare services for a diverse suburban patient list; Including Directed Enhanced Services commissioning, patient participation and health promotion Clinical responsibilities: • • • • • • • • • In accordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, the post-holder will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork, referrals and correspondence in a timely manner Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether selfreferred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health Providing counselling and health education Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards Collecting data for audit purposes taw1666264788.doc 20/10/2022 • • • • Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding handwritten prescriptions whenever possible.) Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate Ensuring that all work carried out which carries a private fee is properly recouped and accounted for; eg Medical Reports, Insurance reports, private letters to rd Parties etc In general, the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care Other responsibilities with the Practice: • • • • • • Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, e.g prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety A commitment to life-long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records Contributing to the summarising of patient records and accurate Read-Coding of patient data Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate Confidentiality • • • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, such training to include: • • • Participation in a Practice based annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development Maintaining skills and knowledge for CPD and accreditation via the annual GP appraisal process including attending monthly CPET sessions organised and coordinated by the University Local Health Board Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work Quality The post-holder will strive Salaried General Practitioner The post-holder should have an interest and enthusiasm in developing their career in primary health care and general practice, in addition to an interest in continuing professional development Specifically, the appointee will demonstrate the following qualities: • • • • • • • A vocationally trained and accredited GP A good knowledge of and interest in general practice and primary care in an urban or suburban setting Initiative, creativity and motivation Have a collegial team spirit and feel comfortable in a strongly multidisciplinary team environment Able to take a consultative approach to their work, appropriately involving relevant people A proven interest in a particular disease area (e.g diabetes) and the willingness to take a leadership role on this particular issue A good working knowledge and interest in national primary care strategies and ideas on how to implement these for the development of the Practice Essential skills and experience • • • • • • • • • • • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work as part if a multi-disciplinary team Ability to work with limited supervision Understanding of the pressures faced by GPs and healthcare teams Willingness to contribute to and participate in a peer support group Current registration with the GMC and appropriate representation with a recognised medical defence organisation IT proficient and familiarity with primary care clinical systems (the Practice uses Vision) Familiarity in using the Microsoft suite of programmes Proven ability to handle a busy and varied primary care case load Proven ability to offer support within a clinical team and share learning points in Practice meetings Ability to draft cogent, error-free letters and reports in a timely manner A good understanding of GMS contracting requirements and the operation of the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF.) Desirable skills and experience • • • Experience and an interest in academic research and/ or medical education within a primary care setting Experience and an interest in either men’s or women’s health issues, osteoporosis, healthcare of the elderly or dementia Additional Language fluency – e.g Welsh taw1666264788.doc 20/10/2022 Dr Marshall & Partners (Cyncoed Medical Centre) Practice Profile Cyncoed Medical Centre is a four partner practice serving approximately 8900 patients The practice currently operates in a purpose built premises and can accommodate up to 10 medical and paramedical staff to consult at a time; whilst providing 48 car parking spaces, 18 of which are in a secure underground car park The practice is situated in a suburban part of Cardiff which sits on the boundary between mature, very high quality residential housing and an area of continuing major growth in a new housing development – including both private and housing association premises Cyncoed Medical Centre has provided medical services to the residents of Cyncoed and surrounding districts for over 60 years, during which time it has grown from a singlehanded practice to a 4-partner group practice The practice has three practice nurses plus a Nurse Practitioner, Health Care Assistants, a visiting health visitor and a Community Nursing team comprising of District Nurses (of all grades.)
