Mental Health Specialist - 1703177 Description Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume): For Psychologists: Ph.D/Psy.D from an APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology program and completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship (and obtain NY State licensure within one year of start date) Three years of full-time postdoctoral work experience providing clinical services (DSM-IV intakes, emergency assessments, individual and/or group psychotherapy), clinical supervision, and/or teaching psychology For Social Workers: Master of Social work degree with a specialization in clinical social work, clinical practice or mental health, possession of state licensure (LCSW) Five (5) years of post-graduation clinical mental health work experience Experience with DSM-IV intakes, emergency and/or risk assessments, individual and/or group therapy Previous experience working with individuals and/or families impacted by abuse, neglect, domestic and/or sexual violence Preferred Qualifications: Previous work experience in a University or college mental health setting Experience providing group psychotherapy and risk assessment in an outpatient treatment setting Experience training and conducting workshops and/or outreach programming on depression/suicide prevention Supervised teaching practicum students Fluency in Spanish, Korean, Japanese and/or Chinese Brief Description of Duties: Within the Division of Student Health, Wellness, and Prevention, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is an IACS accredited, interdisciplinary department of professional staff representing psychology, psychiatry, clinical social work, professional counseling, and nursing, serving a University student population of nearly 26,000 CAPS' commitment is to the provision of college mental health services, of the highest quality, tailored to the unique needs of students and the campus community Stony Brook University is an AAU Public Research University with highly economically diverse undergraduate, graduate, and professional school population CAPS is a key partner in the University strategic planning work to foster a safe and caring environment for learning The Mental Specialist Health provides psychological counseling and related clinical services for culturally and ethnically diverse university students who experience a wide range of psychological problems and psychiatric conditions The incumbent will develop and implement mental health programs for the campus community including the provision of individual and group therapy and counseling to students, assessment interviews, referrals, and consultation with faculty and staff around issues related to the developmental and psychological needs of college students • • • • • • Provides psychological counseling to students, individually and in group sessions, to assist in overcoming dependencies, and adjusting to transitions of college life Maintain current, accurate clinical documentation to meet NY, federal (HIPAA) and accreditation standards and CAPS policies in all areas Serves all campuses including West, East (HSC) and Southampton campus locations Performs crisis intervention and consults or refers to psychiatric and/or medical resources as needed Guide students in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with their problems Discusses progress toward goals with students such as family relationships, educational programs, social development, or other problems of concern Provides assessment and intervention to Students of Concern & behavior Assessment Team Works directly with students of concerns who demonstrate a behavior of high concern of violence, potential violence, or other severe threat to the health and safety of campus Develops, trains, and participates with staff, faculty and students in presenting specialized programs or to particular student groups as identified by the Director of the Counseling Center, including the initial and on-going training of residence hall and other appropriate staff on relevant campus issues such as depression/suicide prevention, alcohol abuse, human sexuality, study skills;
