High Research Activity institution in one of the South’s culturally rich and economically robust cities, seeks the institution’s next Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs A hub of world-class faculty delivers challenging hands-on curricula that ensures UAH graduates are prepared to become tomorrow’s leaders The 500+ acre campus, which includes 17 high-tech centers and laboratories responsible for close to $125 million in annual, externally funded, research expenditures, has seen substantial growth over the past decade with a current enrollment of 9,636 UAH is one of three public doctoral research universities comprising the University of Alabama System Led by the System’s Chancellor and governed by a 15-member self-nominating Board of Trustees, the UA System UNIVERSITY With a thriving on-campus student population, UAH is the essence of a 21st century university Priority programs range from music and the arts to atmospheric science, business management, nursing, and aerospace engineering Programs are supported by a variety of administrative services and state-of-the art facilities, including the Invention to Innovation Center (I²C), a regional initiative that fosters, promotes, and accelerates commercialization of technology-based ventures through incubation, coworking, mentorship, funding, and strategic support Research activities at UAH continue to rank among the top federally funded programs in the United States In 2019, the National Science Foundation’s HERD Survey ranked UAH as: • #6 in federally financed aerospace/aeronautical/ astronautical research expenditures; • #10 in federally financed atmospheric sciences research expenditures; • #11 in federally financed computer and information sciences research expenditures; • #14 in federally financed astronomy research expenditures; • #15 in federally financed economics research expenditures; • #17 in federally financed industrial and manufacturing engineering research companies and 25,000 employees The campus is just minutes from Redstone Arsenal, where approximately 35,000 people work for 22 Federal agencies located on the 38,000-acre base, including NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S Army Materiel Command, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center, the U.S Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency, the Missile and Space Intelligence Center, the U.S Army Aviation & Missile Command, and the U.S Army Aviation & Missile Research Development & Engineering Center Since 2008, the University has Plan 2028 SEARCH PROFILE: Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs A MODERN UNIVERSITY WITH A DISTINGUISHED HISTORY The history of UAH coincides with the developmental years of the U.S space program Huntsville attorney Patrick Richardson approached University of Alabama leaders in the late 1940s about opening an extension center His efforts were successful and classes in Huntsville began in January 1950 In the late 1950s, the U.S Army moved rocket pioneer Dr Wernher von Braun and his team of engineers and scientists from El Paso, Texas, to Redstone Arsenal to manage the U.S Army’s fledgling missile program under auspices of the newly created National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) UAH served the growing community primarily with upper division and graduate courses The campus took on new momentum in 1961 when President John F Kennedy announced the nation’s goal to land a man on the moon and bring him back safely to Earth before the end of the decade Dr von Braun, sensing a need to provide advanced engineering and science curricula to his workforce, convinced the Alabama Legislature to appropriate money for a research institute The institute was created in direct support of the aeronautical and astronautical engineering needs of the U.S Army and the U.S space program In 1969, UAH was made an autonomous university by The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System Over the last 50 years, UAH has built on its sturdy roots and grown strategically into a fiscally sound and highly respected institution SEARCH PROFILE: Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs BROAD RANGE OF HIGH QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAMS UAH offers 100+ areas of study, including 42 bachelor’s degree programs, 30 master’s degree programs, and 17 Ph.D programs, in addition to 17 different research centers, laboratories, and institutes UAH maintains a low faculty-to-student ratio and average undergraduate class size of 37 Many The Provost is responsible for providing leadership in planning, developing, reviewing, and overseeing all academic programs and their budgets; effectively implementing the university’s strategic plan; recruiting, supporting, and retaining faculty; recruiting, nurturing, and educating students; and fostering the maintenance of a productive and stimulating educational environment Reporting to the Provost are the • Deans of the Colleges of • Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences • Business • Establishes University-wide measures of institutional effectiveness and monitors progress relative to specific annual and long-term goals; • Provides leadership for the accreditation process, and upholds academic standards set by professional accrediting bodies Curriculum • Works with the Academic Deans to formulate, maintain, and implement a high-quality curriculum; • Drives the implementation of the University’s student success strategy; • Oversees and coordinates the activities of the General Education Program, the First Year Experience Program, the Honors Program, and all interdisciplinary programs Provides supervision for the Associate and Assistant Provosts in the fulfillment of appropriate terminal degree with credentials in research and teaching sufficient for appointment as a professor with tenure in one of the academic disciplines present at the University; • Prior experience in academic administration preferably comparable to that of a dean, associate vice president, or vice president/provost at a research university; • Broad experience in developing an academic vision and creating effective planning and implementation processes linked to that vision; • Demonstrated ability to manage a complex research-intensive academic organization and to work effectively with colleagues across divisions; • Strong commitment to collegial, consultative processes and to shared governance; • Record of accomplishment in developing effective strategies to build and support academic initiatives; • Track record in supporting internationalization, diversity, interdisciplinary collaboration, cocurricular learning opportunities, and the use of technology to complement instruction and learning; • Strong skills in academic program planning, financial and personnel management, and budget development; • Demonstrated effectiveness in leading and supporting a
