WHAT IS THE RWU COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS CENTER? The Roger Williams University (RWU) Community Partnerships Center (CPC) provides project-based assistance to nonprofit organizations and government agencies in communities in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts Our mission is to undertake and complete projects that will benefit the local community while providing RWU students with experience in real-world projects that deepen their academic experiences CPC projects draw upon students and faculty from RWU programs in areas such as: • Accounting • Historic preservation • Architecture • Justice studies • Business • Law • Communication • Management • Community Development • Marketing • Construction Management • Political Science • Digital Media • Psychology • Education • Public Administration • Engineering • Public Relations • Environmental science and sustainability • Urban Design • Finance • Visual Arts • Graphic Design • Web Development • History & American Studies • Writing Studies The Center has completed projects ranging from; market research and planning, historical research, mill redevelopment feasibility studies, urban policy analysis, design projects for affordable housing and education facilities, community business district revitalization, neighborhood revitalization plans, museum exhibit design, historic building rehabilitation studies, social services research, website and graphic design, environmental sustainability planning, and survey development CPC project services are performed by students in support of their educational experience Applicants shall understand that any deliverables generated through an accepted project are intended to provide conceptual information only to assist in design and planning and as such are not intended, nor should they be used for, construction or other project implementation Professional and/or other services may be needed to ultimately implement a sponsor’s desired goals HOW CAN YOUR ORGANIZATION PARTNER WITH THE RWU CPC? As we prepare for upcoming semesters, we are seeking new projects that can benefit local communities while providing our student/faculty teams with opportunities to apply their learning, engage the community, and create final products that provide benefits to all Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and held for consideration until scheduled CPC Review Committee meetings - generally held in early May and early October Projects may be considered for upcoming spring, summer and fall academic semesters Email: arobinson@rwu.edu Fax: (401) 254-3307 Mail: RWU Community Partnerships Center Roger Williams University One Old Ferry Road Bristol, RI 02809-2921 Any questions regarding the application process can be directed to Arnold at (401) 254-3307 CPC project services are performed by students in support of their educational experience Applicants shall understand that any deliverables generated through an accepted project are intended to provide conceptual information only to assist design and planning and as such are not intended, nor should they be used for, construction or other project implementation Professional and/or other services may be needed to ultimately implement a sponsor’s desired goals SECTION 1: Organization Information Name of Organization: American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter Mailing Address: 105 Gano Street, Providence, RI 02906 Name of Project Contact Person(s): Paula Montgomery Contact Information: Phone: 401.831.7701 ext 123 Fax:401.831.0502 E-mail: paula.montgomery@redcross.org Type of Organization Public (town, city, municipality, special district, government agency) ▀ Private (citizen, non-profit) Other (please explain) Description of Organization and Mission: The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors The Red Cross idea was born in 1859, when Henry Dunant, a young Swiss man, came upon the scene of a bloody battle in Solferino, Italy, between the armies of imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian alliance Some 40,000 men lay dead or dying on the battlefield and the wounded were lacking medical attention Dunant organized local people to bind the soldiers' wounds and to feed and comfort them On his return, he called for the creation of national relief societies to assist those wounded in war, and pointed the way to the future Geneva Conventions In October 1863, The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was created in Geneva, Switzerland, to provide nonpartisan care to the wounded and sick in times of war The Red Cross emblem was adopted at this first International Conference as a symbol of neutrality and was to be used by national relief societies In August 1864, the representatives of 12 governments signed the Geneva Convention Treaty The extraordinary efforts of Henry Dunant led to the eventual establishment of the International Red Cross Today, the Red Cross Movement incorporates the Genevabased International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (the International Federation), as well as National Societies in 175 countries, including the American Red Cross of the United States Clara Barton (1821-1912) dominates the early history of the American Red Cross, which was modeled after the International Red Cross She did not originate the Red Cross idea, but she was the first person to establish a lasting Red Cross Society in America She successfully organized the American Association of the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 1881 Created to serve America in peace and in war, during times of disaster and national calamity, Barton's organization took its service beyond that of the International Red Cross Movement by adding disaster relief to battlefield assistance She served as the organization's volunteer president until 1904 The first Red Cross office in Rhode Island opened on Bellevue Avenue in Newport in 1916, where volunteers played a vital role preparing bandages for area hospitals Today, from our offices in Providence, our chapter serves all 39 cities and towns in Rhode Island as well as Seekonk, Massachusetts On average, how many individuals does your organization serve per year? The Rhode Island Chapter of the Red Cross serves the residents of Rhode Island in a number of different ways throughout the year Our Disaster Services team responds to approximately 200 incidents a year, primarily home fires, impacting between 300 – 350 families on average Our Preparedness Health and Safety courses trained over 9,000 Rhode Islanders last year in lifesaving skills such as CPR, AED, Babysitting, Lifeguarding and First Aid We provide preparedness training and information to community partners, corporate partners and individuals throughout the year while also training volunteers in disaster services, casework, training facilitators and shelter workers How did you hear about the CPC? Referral from Carie Hertzbert, RI Campus Compact SECTION 2: Project Description Title of the Project: 100 Years of the Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter Traveling Exhibit Project Location (Address, City, State, and Zip): Statewide General Project Description (you may attach a longer narrative if necessary): The American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter Centennial will be a year-long celebration/campaign launching in January 2016 The Centennial campaign has three areas of focus: • Celebrate – Highlight and celebrate the rich history and work of the Rhode Island Chapter • Increase Awareness – Engage in a multi-channel communications strategy to articulate the vital role of the Red Cross in the state of Rhode Island throughout the past 100 years while increasing both brand and service awareness • Engage – Create meaningful events and opportunities to engage volunteers, donors, communities and businesses in supporting the work of the organization and its mission One key component of the Centennial is the design, creation, coordination and display of a multi-media traveling exhibit The exhibit is intended to impact each of the above mentioned areas of focus Potential Scope of Work/Tasks for RWU CPC1(you may attach a longer narrative if necessary): • • • • • • History & American Studies/Historic Preservation o Research history of the Red Cross Rhode Island o Develop timeline of historical events/happenings – (website inclusion) o Identify historical objects, articles & photos for inclusion in exhibit Graphic Design/Web Development o Design 100 year logo ideas o Develop concept for Centennial web pages (timeline, stories, traveling exhibit, donor campaign) o Create concept for 100 Year Celebration event (Newport, Oct 2016) Digital Media o Convert historic photos & articles into digital media for inclusion in the exhibit o Design digital media opportunity for sharing stories on site of exhibit Communication/Public Relations o Develop multi-media communications timeline (January – December) o Develop 100 Year awareness campaign Visual Arts o Design exhibit concept  Portable  Easy set up and breakdown  Create spec sheet for space requirements Construction Management o Develop building plans for traveling exhibit from concept design including materials needs What will be the final product output for this project? (Please select all items that are applicable) ▀ ▀ ▀ Strategic Plan Marketing & Communication Plans Additional organizational documents Preliminary photos of the site/project Maps Previous research Survey results Architectural or building plans What active support would your organization be able to contribute should your project be selected? ▀ ▀ ▀ ▀ Funding Volunteers Staff time Consultants – NHQ staff & other Red Cross chapters who have completed a Centennial campaign Other (please list): Access to historical photos/documents, SECTION 3: Project Outcomes Please describe how this project will benefit your organization and the advancement of your mission: Although the American Red Cross brand is well recognized, in fact, the organization is only nd to Coca-Cola in terms of name recognition many people still not know the full scope of what the organization does and the impact that it has had in our 100+ years of history The Centennial campaign, and in particular the traveling exhibit, will provide a centerpiece for education, dialogue and hopefully engagement through the sharing of Red Cross stories The impact of telling our story through a visual display in every corner of the state we hope will better educate people about the important work of the organization and in turn engage them in this work by becoming donors and volunteers Please describe how this project might benefit the overall community, including specific groups that could benefit from this project (i.e target populations, neighborhoods, specific town/city/region) The Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter serves all residents of Rhode Island either when they are in need or as a resource for training and information By creating greater awareness about our services and training opportunities we will build more resilient communities Educators from across the state in various grades can utilize the traveling exhibit as a teaching opportunity Many schools include the life and accomplishments of Clara Barton when studying the Civil War; the traveling exhibit could serve as a visual enhancement to history lessons Please explain why you have chosen to seek assistance from the RWU CPC with your project request, instead of undertaking the project using fee-for-services from a paid professional: The Red Cross is a non-profit organization; an average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in our humanitarian services and programs Although the celebration of our 100 Year history is important directing donor funds away from our mission to the campaign would not be fiscally responsible or meet donor intent The Red Cross is also a volunteer driven organization with 95% of its workforce being volunteers so engaging students in a volunteer project is in line with our core values Please describe how this project will benefit RWU students Engagement by RWU students from various disciplines as outlined above will provide a project based learning opportunity that develops a deeper understanding of the work of the American Red Cross, one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the world Involvement on this project will also provide the students an opportunity to create a brand that will represent the local organization for a full calendar year and will be promoted on various platforms: print, web, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, television, etc SECTION 4: Financial Information What is your organization’s annual operating budget? Please include a copy of your most recent budget with the application What are your major sources of funding? The Red Cross Rhode Island chapter relies on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations to delivery its mission to residents of the state How much funding from your annual operating budget is set aside for this project (if any)? The Centennial Celebration will take place during FY16 and FY17; the budgets for these fiscal years have not been finalized A request has been made for a modest budget to be included in the operation budget for FY16 SECTION 5: Private Sector Involvement Have you or your organization discussed the project with practicing professionals (e.g architect, engineer, planner, consultants, etc.)?
