NEWS RELEASE January 12, 2005 For Immediate Release Contact: Ruth Cossio-Muniz, Communications Specialist Santa Ana College Public Information Office (714) 564-6475, Cellular (714) 401-7884 Donald Verleur II, CEO Olive Crest Homes & Services for Abused Children (714) 543-5437, ext 1115 Foster youth to receive educational opportunity through Early College High School developed by Olive Crest and Santa Ana College Santa Ana, CA – Youth in crisis often fall behind academically, according to the National Resource Center for Youth Services To offer hope and help in reaching foster children’s educational dreams, Santa Ana College (SAC) and Olive Crest have partnered to develop the Olive Crest Early College High School (OCECHS) “Santa Ana College was selected for a grant award after a competitive application and screening process,” said Jeff Tschudi, the acting director for the FCCC’s Early College High School Initiative “Olive Crest and Santa Ana College will develop a school, which is philosophically aligned with the goals and objectives of the Early College High School Intiative, offering foster youth an innovative academic and career acceleration opportunity.” The Olive Crest Early College High School is supported by a grant from the Foundation for California Community Colleges’ Early College High School Initiative, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Ford Foundation, and W.K Kellogg Foundation SAC will receive a total of $100,000 for the five-year term of the initiative The school is scheduled to open in fall of 2005 and serve 100 students at full capacity in the 2009-2010 academic years OCECHS will be operated as a charter school by Olive Crest through the Santa Ana Unified School District SAC’s role will be to serve as the fiscal agent for the grant since funds are only Santa Ana College Public Information Office  1530 W 17th Street (714) 564-6475 www.sac.edu  Santa Ana, CA 92706  provided to community colleges; provide technical assistance to Olive Crest in developing their ECHS; and assist high school students in taking college classes at SAC ( more ) Olive Crest Early College High School Page The Olive Crest ECHS will enable students to complete high school in a small, supportive learning environment Students can concurrently earn a high school diploma, vocational certificate, transfer requirements and/or an associate of arts degree at SAC “This accelerated program provides students with the necessary tools for career exploration, life skills, team building, and internship opportunities at local businesses,” said Tschudi “In my experience over the past 20 years, I have found foster youth to be very resilient,” said Donald Verleur II, Olive Crest CEO “Given the resources and tools for academic success, they are destined to be our leaders of tomorrow.” Olive Crest was founded in 1973 and is a leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse The agency serves children from birth to age 18, and young adults ages 18 to 22 by providing homes and loving families Additionally, youth receive education and vocational training; counseling; relationship building skills; spiritual support; child abuse prevention education; health, nutritional and recreational activities Olive Crest provides services in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego and Riverside counties, as well as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Seattle, Washington To date, Olive Crest has provided shelter, care and professional treatment to more than 35,000 abused children and families Santa Ana College is one of two colleges in the Rancho Santiago Community College District, which serves the residents of Anaheim Hills, Garden Grove, Irvine, Orange, Santa Ana, Tustin and Villa Park With more than 50,000 credit and non-credit students annually, the college provides education for academic transfer and careers, courses for personal and professional development, and workforce training for business and industry ### Santa Ana College Public Information Office  1530 W 17th Street (714) 564-6475 www.sac.edu  Santa Ana, CA 92706 
