HDFS 4100 STUDY ABROAD (Writing Experience) 2017 An Exploration of Cultures in Human and Natural Environments: Australia, New Zealand and Cook Islands - Writing Experience Department of Human Development and Family Science College of Health and Human Performance, East Carolina University Greenville, NC 27858-4353 USA Summer Session - - - Travel May 15-29, 2017 Instructors: Dr Alan Taylor 340 Rivers Building 252-737-2414 tayloral@ecu.edu Credit Hours: Kelly Taylor, M.S 101 Rivers W 252-737-5108 taylorke@ecu.edu Course Description: This course will introduce students to how individuals and children interact with their peers, family members and other community members in Australian, New Zealand & Cook Island societies Students will experience first-hand how various community components such as the housing, markets, schools, and/or health facilities within these countries impact families and then determine how these might be similar or different from their experiences in the continental U.S Course Objectives: The purpose of the course is to introduce students to how children, families, and communities within the Australian, New Zealand and Cook Islander cultures are similar and/or different from their experiences within the continental United States Students will also: Identify and understand how resource management, work and poverty issues impact parenting and family functioning Understand the role and meaning of “community” within Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands and be able to identify historical events that may have influenced how family functioning has evolved within each of their communities Compare and contrast the lives of children, parents and families within Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands societies and how they are similar/different from their own family and close relationships Identify factors that influence family functioning and wellbeing within Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands and compare and contrast these with those within the continental U.S Required Books and Readings: Readings to be selected/determined by Spring 2017 Personal Reflection Journal Other readings in Blackboard Course Requirements: PRE-TOUR ASSIGNMENTS (100 points) You are allowed to work with up to TWO other class members as a group for these pre-tour assignments – if you choose to so WORLD REPORT (50 points) • Read through the 30-page World Family Map 2016 Report Identify a minimum of FIVE family structural/social issues that has data reported from Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands Complete a 1-2 page annotated bibliography* that describes what you found and discuss possible reasons why these trends or issues exist in these countries Explain whether you have found the corresponding data from Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands to be similar or different from each other In addition, explain how this data is similar or different from the U.S data THREE ARTICLES (50 points) • Search for and find THREE articles or chapters from journals, internet sites or books that describe family and social life in Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands These articles/chapters/sites not necessarily have to be academic in nature, but should be informative, educational and helpful Write a one-page annotated bibliography* for each source that briefly describes what you found most interesting and applicable to child development, parent-child relationships, family policies, family health (or anything that relates to your own major’s content areas) Use only one title page for the three articles *An Annotated Bibliography includes the full APA reference at the top of the page (single spaced) and the text being doublespaced Since you are using the full references at the top of the page, no reference page is necessary Use http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ for correct APA formatting Journal Assignment – IMPRESSIONS & FEELINGS (100 points) • Prior to our departure, purchase a Marble/Mead Composition Book to use as your journal Write your name on the cover While on tour, you will be given an opportunity to write ANY impressions or feelings you have during or after each day’s events and activities We expect you write 2-3 paragraphs for each day You are welcome to use the same journal book as the one you use for your experience credit - However, make sure to separate your entry using the heading “IMPRESSIONS/FEELINGS” It might be helpful to write your impressions response using a different colored ink You can also use different halves of the journal to separate your responses Journal Due Date: Submit your journal to your instructor via mail/drop-off by June 10, 2017 “My Travel Experience” Synthesis Paper (150 points) • For this paper, incorporate your findings/writings from your pretour and journal assignments to put together a 10-12 page paper that synthesizes your tour experience with what the literature/data informed you before you left o Apply these ideas to your U.S experience as a child, a family member and a member of the U.S culture/society Compare and contrast Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands and the U.S in regards to their unique cultural, social and familial issues (6-8 pgs) o In addition, what are some key things you learned from the study abroad experience (this can be about yourself, about Australia, New Zealand & Cook Islands etc.)? How might these recent travel experiences impact your professionally goals and activities? (1-2 pgs) o What does “global awareness” mean to you now that you’ve visited these countries? How might your “awareness” be different from other travelers? Use 2-3 specific examples that might have brought about this awareness from your tour experiences What are some actions you might to become more globally aware in the future? (1-2 pgs) o What was your most memorable event/activity from this trip and describe how it has provided a lasting impression? (.5 pg) o Write a short paragraph of what you would say to someone thinking of going on a study abroad What would you say to encourage them to go? Why is it worth it to study abroad? o Finally, what suggestions you have for coursework and the overall tour experience (e.g., pre-departure, during, after tour) for future study abroad tours (any of you are welcome on any of my future tours)?
