Tim Hall's October 2019 Border Inn DXpedition (final report) Tim Hall – Loggings from the Border Inn beverage site, US 6/50 @NV/UT border, Oct 24-28 2019 All dates/times UT For those who don't know me, 99% of my DXing is done in one annual trip to the Nevada-Utah border I make over 100 Perseus recordings on each of these trips Each year I hustle to file a preliminary report (partial 30-day review of recordings) to meet DX club publication deadlines, then I spend about more months reviewing the rest of the recordings, leaving me about months to get all of my station lists, targets, etc., set up for the next trip October seems to be a great month for catching "operational glitches" (especially stations switching to day rig at the wrong time) Some of these anomalies have been observed before, and may be good DX targets again in October 2020 Since my preliminary report, I have discovered a number of excellent new catches, including several very surprising "W" call regional stations DOMESTIC (US/CANADA): 530 ADK 540 550 560 570 580 AK, Adak - Mount Moffett (Western Aleutians) 10/26 1328 - Steady signal with ADK Morse Code beacon over unidentified TIS or HAR I don't normally count beacons, but since this one is operating in the AM broadcast band I'm going to make an exception I don't know what power they are running 3059 miles New, AK #3 HAR NV, Jackpot 10/26 0255 - Faded up over presumed Enciclopedia, Rebelde, and CHLO with short tape loop from Nevada Department of Transportation, instructing listeners to get road conditions by calling 511 or visiting nvroads.com This would seemingly have to be the Jackpot station, which has been heard running this very short message while we were in Jackpot a few years ago The station in Ely, which we heard as we drove through town on our way home, runs a slightly longer message that mentions both 1610 and 530 AM, and the station in Wells was silent the last time we drove through This wire was aimed right at Jackpot, and picked up the Idaho DoT stations on 1610 just across the border in Rogerson, ID and a bit further north in Bellevue, ID Approximately 204 miles New, NV #34 WPWA752 UT, Antelope Island State Park 10/26 0139 - Mixing with CHLO with long message about the park by a male announcer 171 miles Relog CHLO ON, Brampton 10/26 0257 - Finally caught them (using ENNE wire to knock down the Cubans more effectively) Good steady signal with Friday night Punjabi programming, theme music, ID "This is AM 5-30, CHLO-AM Brampton, serving Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, the GTA and the world at am530.ca The opinions expressed in the following programme are those of the host and their guests, and not reflect the views and opinions of the management and staff of CHLO AM 530." This was followed by the 11:00 news Listed 250w 1785 miles New, ON #10 UnID UnID 10/26 0322 - Fighting with unidentified weather station and Antelope Island TIS on N wire, a clear mention of the City of Pinehurst The only Pinehurst is the northwest is Pinehurst, Idaho, which is less than degrees off the beam of this antenna There was once a city TIS in nearby Kellogg Sadly, the FCC TIS search page is useless in that it only includes about half the stations on the air, the others stupidly being licensed by some other government agency I contacted a reporter at the local newspaper in nearby Osburn, but he was unable to tell me if there was a 530 AM active in his area UnID UnID 10/26 1330 - On SE/NW wire, in heavy slop, mixing with ADK, a male voice seemed to mention Eugene, and a few minutes later Ashland There is a station near Ashland which gets out well UnID UnID 10/27 1258 - On N wire, sounded like "welcome to Cold Springs, Colorado" which doesn't make sense given the antenna direction KVIP CA, Redding 10/26 0059 - Faded up under KYAH with talk about the station's recent Share-a-Thon 449 miles Relog KWMT IA, Fort Dodge 10/26 1230 - Appeared suddenly alongside CBK as they switched to day rig "True country AM 5-40, KWMT." 1061 miles Relog KDFT TX, Ferris 10/27 0157 - Briefly on top of channel on E wire with usual slogan "la nueva poderosa 5-40 AM" Listed 249w nights 1075 miles Relog KYAH UT, Delta 10/27 0158 - Barely audible under KDFT with ID They definitely drop to 13w nights They're the second closest station to this DX location, but both (the other one being KELY-1230) are rarely audible at night +10/27 1214 - Under XETX on E wire with two southern-accented men talking about an odd assortment of topics - race horse breeding, home construction, etc., but primarily fishing/boating I originally suspected KMLB, which would have just switched to day power at this time, or WKFN, which would have switched to day power 15 minutes earlier, but after checking everyone's web streams at this hour on Sunday morning, I found it was merely KYAH, one of only stations within a 100 mile radius of this DX location, running a Sunday morning show about fishing 82 miles Relog UnID UnID 10/26 0134 - Way under CBK and XESURF on N (ID/MT) wire with caterwauling female vocal version of Star Spangled Banner Maybe just KYAH? KUZZ CA, Bakersfield 10/26 0102 - Country music, jingle "107.9 KUZZ." 371 miles Relog KLLV CO, Breen 10/26 0059 - Mixing with KFYI and KRAI Contemporary Christian music and ID Very distorted audio, as in recent years This daytimer has been cheating (operating 24/7) for at least 15 years, and running terrible audio for at least a few years now 349 miles Relog KRAI CO, Craig 10/26 0133 - Under KBOW's high school football with country music, ID and slogan "55 country, your country favorites old and new." 360 miles Relog KFRM KS, Salina 10/25 2351 - Audible with KRAI during some dead air on KLLV with "When Radio Was." Pass, and a male voice which seemed to be saying "The Washington Department of Transportation." Both would probably be new catches if I could ID them UnID 10/28 0257 - On ESE wire, a New Mexico Department of Transportation station, different from the others I have been hearing This one was a very short loop by a female announcer, just "The New Mexico Department of Transportation, [station?] 4-5-0." The "5" could be a "1," and the "0" could be a "2" or "3" (thanks to ill-timed static and/or fading) This would definitely be a new catch if I could determine where it is coming from UnID 10/28 1215 - On E wire, message by female announcer began "This is [one long word or 2-3 short words], Oak Springs(?) highway advisory radio…" with possible mentions of New Mexico FL, Gulf Breeze 10/27 0406 - Faded up over Radio Rebelde during promo/ID, mentioning (new?) translator on 95.3 1626 miles Relog NE, Bellevue 10/26 1218 - Sports talk, promo for AM 11-80 962 miles Relog TX, College Station 10/26 0130 - Way under Rebelde and KSMH with high school football A&M Consolidated Tigers @Montgomery Lake Creek Lions 1155 miles Relog WA, Renton 10/26 0133 - Over KSMH with hip-hop "music" and leftist talk //KBMS-1480 They seem to be //KBMS at some other times of the day too 708 miles Relog UnID 10/26 0400 - Faded up suddenly with ID that sounded like "WKXL Fort Worth" and straight into Fox News Could be WTAW or WNRP, both unneeded, and both possible on this (ESE/NNW) wire IA, Iowa City 10/25 0057 - Audible during KRND fades with local news about a crime that took place in nearby North Liberty 1196 miles Relog TX, Fort Worth 10/25 2350 - Poor signal but on top of channel (even after they should have switched to night rig ten minutes later) with Thursday night high school football (unidentified teams) Announcer broke away at halftime to run some PSAs which included the 15 th annual golf tournament of the Kennedale Chamber of Commerce on October 28 th (phone number 916-595-3761, rather confusing since that is a Sacramento phone number but it appears on the web sites of several civic organizations in Kennedale, TX!) and a local chili cook-off +10/26 0057 - Country Gospel music, ID "you're listening to 16-30 KKGM Fort Worth, a Mortenson Broadcasting station."
