UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SANTA BARBARA • SANTA CRUZ BERKELEY • DAVIS • IRVINE • LOS ANGELES • MERCED • RIVERSIDE • SAN DIEGO • SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT California Digital Library 415 20th Street Oakland, California 94612 For Immediate Release: Information: September 6, 2005 Library For More Jennifer Colvin, California Digital (510) 287-3384, jennifer.colvin@ucop.edu California Digital Library Announces New Director of Licensed Content for UC OAKLAND, Calif — September 6, 2005 — The California Digital Library (CDL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ivy Anderson to the position of Director of Licensed Content, effective January 2, 2006 As Director of Licensed Content, Anderson will provide leadership to the 10 campus system in developing the University of California libraries’ shared licensed digital collection, which currently comprises 23,000 online journals, 250 reference databases, and a rapidly growing variety of digital images, journal backfiles, and other archival collections In this role, she will contribute to the University’s strategic goal of addressing the profound problems in the marketplace for scholarly publications These problems are reflected, for example, in the persistent hyperinflation in subscription prices for academic journals and the absence of any economically sustainable means of ensuring persistent widespread access to scholarly work Anderson will also take on a new leadership role at the CDL designed to help coordinate systemwide collection efforts that extend beyond licensed digital information to the acquisition and management of select printed materials and the digital reformatting of existing library holdings The libraries’ aim in coordinating these shared collection development efforts is simple: to continue supporting the University’s world-class research and teaching by cost-effectively broadening and enhancing access to the information on which it depends Anderson is currently the program manager for electronic resource management and licensing at the Harvard University Library, where she developed a digital acquisitions program as part of Harvard's Library Digital Initiative She is known for her work in the development of e-resource tools and services through the Digital Library Federation Electronic Resource Management Initiative as well as her efforts to promote acceptable licensing standards through the Northeast Research Libraries Consortium - more - “Ivy’s contributions at Harvard, the Digital Library Federation, and the Northeast Research Library Consortium, among many others, have helped to define contemporary and successful resource sharing among research libraries,” said Daniel Greenstein, Associate Vice Provost and University Librarian for the CDL “Large-scale collaboration and co-investment among the UC libraries are essential to create the worldclass collections of scholarship that our researchers and students require Our shared digital collections were launched and became a success story under Beverlee French, retiring Director of Licensed Content, and we’re thrilled that Ivy will contribute her expertise to their extension and to the evolution of the University of California’s libraries and its academic information space more generally,” he said About the California Digital Library Through the use of technology and innovation, the California Digital Library supports the assembly and creative use of scholarship for the University of California libraries and the communities they serve Established in 1997 as a UC library, the California Digital Library has become one of the largest digital libraries in the world ### ... to the evolution of the University of California? ??s libraries and its academic information space more generally,” he said About the California Digital Library Through the use of technology and... technology and innovation, the California Digital Library supports the assembly and creative use of scholarship for the University of California libraries and the communities... libraries and the communities they serve Established in 1997 as a UC library, the California Digital Library has become one of the largest digital libraries in the world ###
