The stores prospered during the war years and advertisements took on a patriotic tone Always on the leading edge, Barnett pioneered a number of new ideas For instance, his stores were among the first to offer customers the comfort of air conditioning During the 1940's, Helzberg's became known as the "Middle West's Largest Jewelers" and the Helzberg chain had grown to 11 stores In 1950, Barnett staged his most spectacular promotion with the showing of the Henry Winston Court of Jewels The showing drew thousands to Kansas City's Country Club Plaza store to see the legendary Hope diamond and the Star of the East, among other famous jewels Katherine Hepburn accepted Barnett's invitation to model the famous jewels in publicity shots In May of 1956, Barnett Jr graduated from the University of Michigan and joined the executive staff as Assistant to the President and his first duties were those of a buyer In 1963, Barnett Sr stepped up to Chairman of the Board, giving 29-year-old Barnett Helzberg Jr., responsibility for leading the Kansas-City based Helzberg Diamonds from his father He carried on the nearly 50-year old firm’s tradition of innovative promotion with attention-getting advertisements, and from a simple sketch inspired by his engagement, he had an idea to create the 'I Am Loved®' button and a promotional campaign was developed to support it It was this now-famous “I Am Loved” campaign that made Helzberg Diamonds a national name In fact, I Am Loved spread around the world and the buttons were translated to French, Italian, Spanish and Hebrew The campaign's instant success was a marketing phenomenon Helzberg also opened its first store in a covered, suburban shopping mall in 1967, a move that eventually would redirect the focus of the company Helzberg began to look toward regional malls for expansion opportunities An aggressive expansion plan during the 70's where emphasis remained on treating customers and sales associates with respect, and was the company tradition was outlined in the Helzberg Customer Bill of Rights THE HELZBERG CUSTOMER BILL OF RIGHTS The right to expect polite service The right to expect Helzberg personnel to be knowledgeable about their merchandise The right to exceptional value The right to a full refund within 90 days Helzberg Diamonds emerged as the dominant diamond specialist of the ’80s In 1987, Helzberg stepped up to chairman of the board, and the company's leadership was strengthened by the selection of Jeffrey W Comment to serve as president With Comment at the helm, Helzberg Diamonds entered the 90s with 101 stores in 22 states At that time, Helzberg began to consider retirement, but first he wanted to ensure that his family's three-generation business would continue to enjoy financial stability A chance meeting on the streets of New York with Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., provided the perfect solution Helzberg announced the sale and retired, knowing that the additional financial security and philosophies offered by the parent company would enable growth without sacrificing the legacy of the Helzberg Diamonds traditions ** source: Helzberg Diamonds: www.helzberg.com About Barnett Helzberg and the Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program* The Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program is a nonprofit organization created in 1995 by Barnett Helzberg Jr., former owner and president of Helzberg Diamonds The inspiration behind HEMP could not have been more striking It grew very naturally out of Barnett's 23-year mentoring relationship with the late Ewing Kauffman Those twoplus decades with the "master entrepreneur" convinced Barnett of the value of matching seasoned, successful entrepreneur mentors with less-experienced entrepreneur mentees It is dedicated to growing and nurturing mentoring relationships by providing an enduring link between knowledgeable business veterans and established entrepreneurs Its primary focus is the development of a long-term relationship with a mentor who acts as a coach and a sounding board Because mentees want to get to know Barnett better, "Lunch with the Big Guy" appears several times each year on that calendar "Big Guy" is a fitting epithet for Barnett Helzberg He established this marvelous program with one guiding principle always foremost in mind Simply put, "What could be more valuable to an established entrepreneur than the wisdom of those who have gone before " "Mentoring is like a disease that I hope no one finds a vaccine for," says Barnett Helzberg Jr He found the unbiased, free-flowing exchange of ideas from comrades in other business fields extremely valuable At one point, Helzberg asked Kauffman how he could ever repay him Helzberg recalls Kauffman, who died in 1993, saying, "Oh, I'm sure you'll the same thing for someone some day An adjunct professor at Rockhurst since 1991, Helzberg still volunteers as a guest lecturer for the university's executive MBA program, teaches personal entrepreneurial strategy for the Kauffman Foundation, and co-teaches a course for the University of Kansas." "I like to see people's eyes light up when they understand something," he says "You feel you’re giving them something that’s valuable." "When I joined the Young President's Organization (YPO), I found out other people weren't much smarter than me Everyone in business has similar problems YPO provides a place where you can open up and say, 'I messed up What I do?' and benefit from the experience of people who’ve overcome the same challenges." Helzberg also personally mentors the CEO of an Overland Park, Kan., consulting firm that develops strategic marketing initiatives for health care businesses What started as a one-year mentoring commitment in response to an invitation from the Athena Foundation, whose mission is to create leadership opportunities for women, continues because, Helzberg says, "It just chemically worked." http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2004/04/19/editorial3.html?page=2 Components of the program include a one-on-one mentoring relationship, networking opportunities with peers and veteran business owners, exposure to mentoring skills that can be applied to any professional or personal situation, business educations discussing greatest successes and lessons learned from peers and top CEOs in the community Considerable mentoring is also fostered through peer-to-peer relationships derived from involvement through HEMP The program involves a three-year commitment About fifteen entrepreneurs a year are accepted and matched with a mentor each year Steps are taken to ensure good "chemistry" that fosters a learning environment Currently there are about 100 people participating in the program as mentors, entrepreneur-students, or supporting contacts Several events and meetings are held throughout the year and every mentor-student team is required to have at least four one-on-one meetings each year The Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program is dedicated to strengthening entrepreneurial leaders through excellence in mentoring * source: www.helzbergmentoring.org Barnett has been recognized for teaching innovation and excellence in both graduate and executive development programs He has been a featured speaker at numerous conferences, sharing his experiences at the National Institute of Development Administration, at the Warren Buffett Wealth Seminar in Bangkok, and at the Educational Entrepreneurship Conference in Washington, DC sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute in 2005 Barnett has taught “Retailing” and “Achieving Management Excellence” and “Entrepreneurship” to MBA students He also is a teacher for the Personal Entrepreneurial Strategy course at Kauffman Foundation During his teaching career, he has also been invited as a guest speaker to teach retailing, management, and customer relations to students at the University of Kansas, William Jewell College, University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the University of Michigan http://business.missouri.edu/649/3723.aspx Helzberg, Jr received the Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan He has won many awards and honors for his work in business, teaching innovation, philanthropy and community service As an adjunct professor of Rockhurst University since 1991, he has taught courses in Retailing, Achieving Management Excellence, and Entrepreneurship to M.B.A students Helzberg, Jr is the author of What I Learned Before I Sold To Warren Buffet , published in April 2003 His previous book, I Am Loved, with co-author Dr Rich Davis, was published in 2001 The Thrill of it All Helzberg and his wife started their family foundation in 1982, in part, because it enables them to put more money aside in the good years and still have some to give away in the bad years They also like the idea of earning tax-free dollars to give to charity Over the years, the foundation has focused its giving on Jewish philanthropies, education, health, and the arts Four years ago, however, Helzberg co-founded a charter school in Kansas City, Mo., that now draws most of his attention and financial support Last year the school graduated its first class Justifiably proud, Helzberg notes that all graduates went on to college Next year, when construction ends on the school’s new building, enrollment will jump from 310 students in sixth through twelfth grade to 1,000 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade Helzberg claims there's "nothing generous" about what he's doing "I don't feel like I'm giving to anybody," he says "After food, clothing and shelter, what you really need? I'm getting a lot more than I'm giving When you see these kids go to college….well, why you think Mr Kauffman did it? It's such a thrill." © 2006 Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation All rights reserved http://eventuring.kauffman.org/eShip/appmanager/eVenturing/eVenturingDesktop? _nfpb=true&_pageLabel=eShip_articleDetail&_nfls=false&id=Entrepreneurship/Resource/GBRe source_011.htm&_fromSearch=false&_nfls=false ROCKHURST RENAMES SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AFTER BARNETT HELZBERG JR Kansas City Business Journal - by Jerry Lamartina Staff Writer Sometimes, common courtesy leads to uncommon generosity and back to uncommon thanks Barnett Helzberg Jr knows it can happen Helzberg had a lifelong dream of teaching One day more than 10 years ago, he sent an inquiry letter to a handful of area colleges to see whether any of them had room for another teacher Rockhurst College now Rockhurst University was the only school that responded It invited him to teach a course in its MBA program as an adjunct faculty member, starting in the fall of 1990 The course was called Retailing Since then, he's also taught Achieving Management Excellence and, last year, Entrepreneurship Recently, Helzberg and his wife, Shirley, gave a monetary gift to Rockhurst's school of management Rockhurst, in return, decided to rename the school the Helzberg School of Management Wednesday, October 17, 2001 That lifelong dream of teaching Helzberg had was rooted in lessons from his father, he said, including: Don't waste time on what you can't control, but focus instead on what you can; there's always an answer don't tell me there's no way http://kansascity.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2001/10/15/daily24.html Dec 29th is 75th birthday!! Friday, May 25, 2007 HELZBERG USES EXPERIENCE TO POLISH OTHER ENTREPRENEURS Kansas City Business Journal - by Rob Roberts Staff Writer The four C's of the diamond business are cut, color, clarity and carat weight Barnett Helzberg Jr., CEO of Helzberg Diamonds Inc from 1962 to 1995, learned another four C's all involving clarity from one of his mentors, the late Ewing Marion Kauffman Kauffman, founder of Marion Laboratories and owner of the Kansas City Royals, taught Helzberg that successful companies have clarity of purpose, direction, structure and measurement "Do you know how much money Barnett has and how much easier it would be for him to just write a check?" said Danny O'Neill, founder of The Roasterie Inc "Instead, he created HEMP (the nonprofit Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program) He built a charter school (the University Academy) He's teaching at Rockhurst University He's a mentor " O'Neill, who launched his Kansas City coffee business in 1993, became one of the first participants in HEMP two years later The Roasterie had a half-dozen employees and around $1 million in annual sales at the time Today, it employs about 50 and sold more than $5 million worth of coffee last year to retailers in all 50 states O'Neill gives much of the credit to the mentoring he received from Helzberg and H&R Block Inc co-founder Henry Bloch, one of Helzberg's early HEMP recruits Based on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, HEMP has paired more than 150 budding entrepreneurs with mentors during its 12-year history Not all of the monuments to Helzberg's philanthropy are the flesh-andbone variety, however "He is also responsible for significant bricks and mortar," said Pete Levi, president of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce "The University Academy is his baby." The K-12 charter school was conceived during a family vacation that Barnett Helzberg requested when asked for his birthday wish a few years ago The University Academy opened in 2000 with Barnett Helzberg as its board chairman Dedicated to high-caliber college preparatory education, the school receives public money for operations But its new $40 million home, opened two years ago at 6801 Holmes Road, was financed almost entirely by the Helzberg Family Foundation "We had a lot of generous people in on it, like Julia Irene Kauffman, the Halls, Fred Pryor " said Helzberg, who cringed at the idea of an article focusing on him Helzberg also disdains the phrase "giving back," which often is applied to his teaching, mentoring and giving "That makes me sound too noble," he said "Actually, it's the most selfish thing I do." Levi said he's never met a business leader who loves people more while caring less what others think of him Unlike his father, a self-made man who wore monogrammed silk underwear, Helzberg is selfdeprecating and known for dressing down complete with his trademark fanny pack "He couldn't care less who knows he carries his yellow mustard around with him in his fanny pack," O'Neill said "It doesn't matter whether he's at the American (Restaurant) or on Fifth Avenue." The longtime president of the Kansas City Symphony board, Shirley Helzberg was honored with her husband as the Greater Kansas City Chamber's Kansas Citians of the Year in 2001 Earlier that year, Rockhurst University honored Barnett Helzberg by renaming the business school where he had taught for 10 years the Helzberg School of Management That and the barn-raising mentality he inherited as a Midwesterner inspired his mentoring and teaching But there's another reason he continues them "Frankly, it's much more fun than hearing about my contemporaries' new hips and knees," he said rroberts@bizjournals.com ... design and donate the written content and software for the Helzberg program that sets expectations and tracks success for HEMP mentors and mentees As Mr Holt will explain, the clinical and basic...
