HCM 4570 Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Course Syllabus Spring 2012 Location LSBE 265 Tuesday Thursday 930-1045 AM Instructor: Jill Klingner, R.N Ph.D Office: 335 K – FMIS Department Suite Telephone: 726-8626 E-mail: klin0089@d.umn.edu Office hours: Tuesdays 2-330 pm Wednesday 930-11 am By appointment Course Materials Required: Applying Quality Management in Healthcare, Third Edition Diane L Kelly : 450 pages Publisher: Health Administration Press; Third edition (July 18, 2011) ISBN-10: 1567933769 ISBN-13: 978-1567933765 Additional reading as assigned Optional Rulebook for Arguments (Any edition) by Anthony Weston Publisher: Hackett Pub Co; Revised edition (November 14, 2008) ISBN-10: 0872209547 ISBN-13: 978-0872209541 Course Description This course is designed for undergraduate students who seek an understanding of the administration and organization of quality and patient safety definitions, practices, processes within the health care system of the United States This course focuses on quality and patient safety management in the US health care system using continuous quality improvement and team building techniques Topics to be examined include the history of quality, leaders and trends in health care quality and patient safety, measure and measurement development, analysis of variation and quality practices in different health care environments, administrative responsibilities and structures with respect to production and service quality, including the function and roles of professional and non-professional staff Knowledge Objectives The course is designed to provide students with an understanding of (1) quality and patient safety history and trends; (2) health care measure and measurement; and (3) management’s role in quality management of health care products and services Course Structure The course will incorporate both lecture and discussions Discussion among the group is highly encouraged and will contribute to the final course grade The course relies on texts and case studies that play a vital role in comprehension of the subject Therefore, in order for the student to carry on a coherent discussion, the assigned reading must be finished prior to the class meeting Course Requirements Quizzes (1-4) Including vocabulary 25-50 points each IHI open school coursework 10 points per class To receive credit the courses must be successfully completed prior to relevant exam 140 points total Exam 1: L101, PS 101, 103, 104, QI 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106 Exam 2: PS 100, 101, 105, 106 VARK Group Project Two exams 25 200 points total Problem statement and literature review (20) page project rationale (30) intervention rationale (30) Flowchart, RCA etc (30) Maintain the Gains and next steps (20) Project Presentations (30 points) Meeting agendas and minutes (20) Professional packaging (20) 100 each Writing assignments will be graded based on 1) the depth of understanding exhibited in your writing, 2) the quality of the paper’s organization,(If in doubt use the Rulebook for Arguments for reference.), 3) spelling and grammar (3 points will be deducted for each grammatical and each spelling error If in doubt go to the writing tutor center and/or edit each other’s papers.) All writing assignments must be 12 point font with inch margins Attendance is required Your grade will drop if you miss more than three classes three missed classes= no grad change, missed classes = one grade drop, for example A to A- missed classes = two grade drop for example A to B+, etc There are no excused absences Grading Scale There are approximately 700 points Every points are approximately equal to 1% Grade A AB+ B BC+ C CD F Percent of total points available 96-100% 92 to
