I wanted to share a little information about my background I earned my PhD in Information Science with a concentration in Health Informatics in the College of Information here at UNT, after enjoying a full career as a nurse/healthcare executive in a variety of healthcare delivery environments I hold bachelor’s degrees in both biology and nursing from Juniata College and then Thomas Jefferson University I hold a current Texas RN license, and nursing has given me the chance to serve in a leadership capacity in many healthcare organizations Prior to earning my PhD, I served as the director of home health and hospice agencies; the director of an occupational health center; the Executive Director of a program funded by NIH and the National Cancer Institute to CLEAR | University of North Seidel, Lee F and Lewis, James B (2014) The Middleboro Casebook Healthcare Strategy and Operations Health Administration Press, Chicago, Illinois ISBN-13: 978-1567936285 Course Description This course defines and describes critical skills required to successfully manage healthcare organizations After presenting career options in health care administration, the course will discuss management theory, principles of effective communication, managerial decision making, project planning and execution, change management, staff recruitment, management, and retention, process improvement, and ethics in the healthcare organization This course is composed of weekly online discussion topics, a midterm exam covering the first chapters of the text book, and an applied final project paper in which the will apply the management theories, techniques, and tools learned in the course to solve real world business problems The student will develop a strategic response to address the problem and will demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and techniques that will lead to a successful outcome For the final project paper, the student will choose and respond to one question provided by the instructor that reflects concepts learned in one chapter in the text, Management of Healthcare Organizations, and that relate to an aspect of healthcare organization management that they are most interested in The student will respond to questions about the organizations described in our companion text, The Middleboro Casebook, that allow them to analyze a specific situation in one or more hypothetical healthcare organization and apply what they have learned to solve a business problem The types of organizations represented in The Middleboro Casebook include hospitals, a home health agency, a skilled nursing facility, a physician office practice, and a county health department A resource list of helpful websites related to healthcare management has been provided in Resource Files in the course menu for future reference and for additional assistance in preparing their final project paper Goals / Rationale of the course:      This course is designed to prepare students for advancement to leadership positions in health care organizations Students will understand and explain management theories and principles Students will learn to analyze business problems and will learn how to develop and implement effective strategies to solve them Students will learn and apply effective problem solving techniques, useful personnel and change management techniques, and will develop communication strategies that motivate staff and that ensure successful achievement of organizational objectives The course presents 15 weekly modules, each related to a different aspect of organizational leadership The course covers strategic planning; work organization and delegation; effective group and team management; staff recruitment, development and retention; leadership theories and models; motivating and influencing staff; ethical principles for leaders; process control and improvement; managerial problem solving and decision making; change management; and principles of effective communication Learning Objectives  The learner will be an active and engaged participant in discussion forums within his/her learning community by analyzing, constructing/creating, and evaluating information presented within the textbook, external readings/resources, student research, and class activities  The learner will be able to define and describe the current health care The learner will be able to list and explain the key functions of organizational leaders and will demonstrate the ability to utilize three external resources from the list provided in solving the business problem presented in the final paper The learner will be able to synthesize and apply management skills associated with five basic management functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling Through the final project, the learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of management theory, managerial problem solving and decision making, and change management Teaching Philosophy This course will introduce you to a full range of issues associated managing a health care organization In the changing health care business environment, it is essential to have a good understanding of the legal, financial and regulatory issues that impact the delivery of quality health care services The textbooks for this course, Management of Health Care Organizations by Peter Olden and The Middleboro Casebook by Lee Seidel and James Lewis, are both very readable and very practical, and you will engage in dynamic discussions each week that will keep the readings relevant and interesting I believe that students perform best when they feel valued in the learning environment and when they believe that they are capable contributors You will find that each of your classmates will bring experiences to our discussion that will expand your views and challenge your ideas about leadership and management Engage in getting to know your fellow classmates and in discovering the expertise that each of you bring to this class Many of you will take other courses together, and this experience will help you to create a bond with other students that could last beyond your time in this course Networking is an important part of our profession, and this class will give you an opportunity to network with future leaders in health care You have much to learn from each other, and this class will help you to that I will be actively engaged in our discussions each week, and will be available to help you at all times to be successful in this course My goals are to help every student to develop confidence in his or her abilities, to improve your written communication skills, and for you to feel that the material that I am presenting is relevant and useful I will provide clear and specific goals, expectations, and deadlines in the course syllabus, the course calendar, and in rubrics for discussion board participation and for the final project paper I will also provide specific and useful feedback to each student at the conclusion of each weekly discussion, and at several stages during the preparation of the final paper to help you to get the most from each assignment and from our interaction A written examination at the conclusion of week will ensure that you have acquired a basic understanding of key management theory and functions, and will prepare you to successfully complete the final project paper Our weekly discussions and the final project paper will encourage you to think critically, and will help you to apply what you are learning Each week I will introduce the week’s discussion with by sharing a personal experience or insight that I have had as a health care executive in my segment Inside the Executive Suite Each will appear as a centered around one of the six modules: healthcare management and organization, and the five basic management functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling We will explore the following list of the topics throughout the semester, and I encourage you to begin the semester by reading this syllabus and the course calendar fully and by marking all assignments and due dates in your agenda before we begin This class is time consuming, and you will need to plan to spend a minimum of 3-5 hours per week on CLEAR | University of North Texas Online Course Syllabus Template – Blackboard Learn 2017 your assignments Work of high quality is expected to be submitted on time as stated in the course calendar Helpful Tip: One of the most helpful tools in Blackboard makes it possible for you to forward posts from each discussion forum to your student email If you have a smart phone, that means that you can read and respond to an interesting post from a classmate or me right from your smartphone email, which can be very convenient if you have a few minutes during the day To set this up, go into each discussion topic one at a time and this in each one At the top of the discussion threads there is a tab that says "thread actions" Click to access the drop-down menu and choose "subscribe" This will forward all the posts to your my.unt.edu student email, which can be very convenient If you discover that you don't find this helpful, you can always unsubscribe by clicking "unsubscribe" on the banner above the discussion forum You will have to subscribe to each discussion topic individually but I have found it to be very useful! Start Here When you first access the course, click on Start Here in the course menu and complete the Blackboard Orientation Please read the course syllabus completely and review the course calendar and UNT Academic Calendar, all of which are also located in Start Here Complete the Zip Code Survey found in Start Here during the first week of the course Finally, post your Personal Introduction, due week 1, in Start Here, following the guidelines for the personal introduction provided in that folder Begin the first week’s reading assignment and note that your personal introduction and your initial posts for the first discussion forum are both due in the first week of the course on the date specified in the Course Calendar How Students Should Proceed Each Week for Class Activities Rely on the Course Calendar for information about each week’s assignment and all assignment due dates to ensure that all assignments are submitted on time There are substantial penalties for submitting work late, so record due dates in your agenda and monitor them frequently Rubrics that explain what is expected and how assignments will be graded have been provided for Discussion Board Participation weekly discussions The student will complete the assigned ‘online’ exam during week by accessing the Assessment folder in the Blackboard course, and clicking on Assessment The student will respond to posted online course discussion questions each week using the Blackboard discussion tool, and will follow the guidelines provided in the Discussion Board Rubric The Discussion Board Rubric is found by PowerPoints in Additional Resources, Discussions The Blackboard Discussions area is a public domain that will be seen by all students Breakroom If you have a question that you think might be shared by others in the class, please post it to Breakroom, the first segment in the Discussion Board area I will respond to the post and my answer will be available for everyone in the class to see 11 CLEAR | in the first folder in Discussions, labeled Personal Introduction Submit your personal introduction by the due date provided on the Course Calendar Weekly Discussion Forums will be posted in Discussions and will be in sequential folders labeled Week Discussion, Week Discussion, etc To respond to the discussion topic at hand, create a thread, enter your response and click Submit Email Your course e-mail can be accessed from Messages in the course menu If you have questions or concerns that you not want made public, please direct them to the course instructor in a message to the instructor only You can also message your classmates in Messages Messages sent to the instructor will be read as soon as possible and every effort will be made to answer your message within business days Students are expected to check course messages and UNT email daily for messages from the university, other students, or the instructor Rubrics The Discussion Board Rubric and the Final Project Paper Rubric can be found by clicking on Rubrics in the course menu Assessments Your course exam, Assessment 1, will be offered in week To access it, click on Assessments in the course menu Click on Assessment Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Sign Ups The questions that will form the basis for the final project paper will be posted in a folder in the course menu entitled Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Sign Ups I recommend that students review all of the questions associated with each chapter on the list before selecting one question associated with one chapter from our text for the Final Project Paper After reviewing the list of possible questions, each student will select the chapter and one question that he or she is most interested in, and this question will form the basis for his or her Final Project Paper To sign up for the chosen question, the student and will enter their first and last name next to the question that they select for their Final Project Paper in the area marked Project Sign Ups in the course menu Each question may only be selected by one student, and selections will be approved by the instructor prior to moving on to the next stage, so take your time and choose your chapter and question carefully Your selection cannot be changed once it has been approved, and students may select a question as soon as they can make a choice that they are comfortable with There are over 40 questions to choose from, so it should not be difficult to select a question that you will enjoy working on Questions may be selected, and you may even deadline, which is September 28, 2017 at 11:59pm At that time, all selections must be made, and the selection period will expire I will approve project sign ups by posting feedback in the grade center, and final project paper question selections will be final I will approve your selection so that you know that you are the only person working on that question You should be able to see that on the sign-up wiki The only way that I would not approve your topic is if there is an accidental duplication, but you will receive full credit for submitting your proposed topic if it is submitted by the deadline, even if I have to ask you to change it due to an accidental duplication Assignments You will submit the Final Project Paper in four stages: Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Selection, Final Project Paper Outline, Final Project Paper Draft, and Final Project Paper Submission Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Selection will be done via the Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Selection tab in the course menu, as indicated above The remaining three stages of the Final Project Paper will be submitted via the Assignments tab in the course menu Due dates for all stages of the Final Paper Project are posted on the Course Calendar, and you will receive feedback after you submit the Final Project Paper Outline, and the Final Project Paper Draft so that your final submission will be a refined product Follow the guidelines for submission of each stage of the final project paper that are provided on the Final Project Paper Rubric, which appears in Rubrics Submit each stage of the paper to the appropriate tab in Assignments on Blackboard When you submit your assignments, DO NOT ask for confirmation KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING YOU SUBMIT Policy on Late Assignments All work for this course is due no later than 11:59 pm on the designated due date (Thursdays, throughout the semester, unless specifically noted) Any assignment submitted after that time will receive a highest possible score of 50% Additional points may be deducted when the assignment is graded based on the quality of the work submitted Work submitted more than 48 hours after the due date will not be accepted, and the student will receive a zero for that assignment Please don’t lose valuable points this semester by turning in work late **Late work is subject to penalty described above unless previously approved by the instructor** Tracking Blackboard enables the instructor to track information on the number of times each student has posted, the number of times the student has accessed the course materials, and the time of the student’s last posting Downloading Copies of discussion board materials, the course syllabus, course calendar, discussion board rubric and final project paper rubric may be downloaded and printed for easy reference 13 CLEAR | University of North Texas Online Course Syllabus Template – Blackboard Learn 2017 ASSESSMENT & GRADING This course is made up of a series of assignments and assessments to assist you in achieving the course learning objectives/outcomes Each week you will work on various combinations of assignments, activities, discussions, readings, research, etc which will be made available to you each Sunday at 5pm and close on the following Sunday at 5pm This gives you the benefit of the full weekend to complete your participation in the week’s discussion topic The total points available for the course for the combined discussion forums, assessment and final project paper is 1000 points I Discussion Board Participation and Weekly Activities (40%)- Your personal introduction and 15 discussion forums @ 25 points each = 400 points Purpose: To provide the student with a general introduction to major issues associated with healthcare administration, and to teach participants how to contribute meaningfully to a discussion in an online environment Before your first interaction on the discussion board, please review the Rubric for Discussion Board Participation posted in Rubrics Description: The discussion board assignments and activities are organized around the fifteen major topics covered in the course Textbook readings are linked to each discussion board topic, and I will introduce each week’s discussion with a lesson entitled Inside the Executive Suite that presents an experience or perspective gained during my tenure as a health care executive that relates to the topic of the week Instructions: The course week will begin on Sundays at 5pm, and initial postings to the weekly discussion board assignments (your own response to the discussion topic and responses to two of your classmates’ responses) are due every Thursday, no later than 11:59pm These posts will lay the foundation for the beginning of our conversation, but students are expected to post throughout the week, and to introduce supplementary materials to expand the conversation or to illustrate your point Each week’s discussion will close on Sundays at 5pm and the new week’s discussion window will begin Begin reading weekly materials early, so that you will be prepared to participate each week in the weekly discussion As noted above, refer to the rubric for the grading of the discussion board Participation is required throughout the week, not simply on a single day Each discussion forum is worth 25 points Students that fail to respond to a weekly discussion forum will receive a for the week Poor responses like “I agree” or “Well said!” are not substantive responses and will not be counted as a quality response Quality interaction with your instructor and with your peers is essential in this class To earn credit for the discussion associated with each topic, you are, at a minimum, required to respond to the discussion thread yourself and to post quality responses to at least two of your classmates by the Thursday 11:59 pm deadline Achievement of this standard will earn 15 points To earn the maximum credit available each week (25 points), you will need to improve or expand the week’s discussion by illustrating your points with personal examples, video links from YouTube, academic journal or professional magazine articles or Web based articles that you identify through your own research, or newspaper articles that are relevant, etc 14 CLEAR | University of North Texas Online captioning and other assistive tools will be available for students that must rely on them to access the material The more you invest in making your responses relevant and engaging for your classmates, the more everyone will enjoy and benefit from the discussions I will be participating in the discussion forum each week and will demonstrate the level of participation that I am expecting social and educational characteristics, economic and political characteristics, media, medical resources and recent community issues and concerns Each of the hypothetical healthcare organizations (including hospitals, a home health agency, a skilled nursing facility, a physician office practice, and a county health department) represented in the book must respond to these factors in the community that they serve, and these factors must be accounted for in your response to the question presented The set of questions associated with each chapter of the Management of Healthcare Organizations textbook relate to the organizations in The Middleboro Casebook and will be posted in Final Project Paper Chapter and Question Sign Ups Students may view all of the questions associated
