English 10- Division II Unit Cultural Diversity Lesson 4: Speaking I a b - c + + II III Aims: Main aims: Knowledge: Acknowledge about traditions and customs in two countries and discuss those of Viet Nam Language: Using some ways( ex: in my opinion/ I think ) to express their opinion when speaking about the most interesting thing about traditions and customs in Russia and the UK and what information they can remember after reading this text Skill: Reading: Skimming skill through the reading text about traditions and customs in Russia and the UK Speaking: Express their opinion about traditions and customs of these two countries and Vietnam Personal aims: For teachers to improve their skills of organizing skills Subsidiary aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: Talk about superstitions in both Vietnam and other countries, namely Russia and the UK Better their team-working skill and express their opinion about the most preferable thing they find in the reading text about Russian and British traditions and customs using suggested expressions in the textbook Class description - 25 grade 10th students using new textbooks Assumed knowledge: - Vocabulary: Words and phrases related to traditions, cultural characteristics and superstitions Ex: ceremony, proposal, superstitious - Pronunciation: Stress in two-syllable words with the same spelling IV V Duration: 45 minutes Anticipated problems Solutions to these problems - It is time-consuming when students change their seats in the last activities - The last activity may take up the most of the whole lesson’s time duration compared to other activities - It is hard to keep track of the time for each activity VI VII - There should be a supervisor monitoring the activity (can be a student) - If there is not enough time, there should be some groups going to present in front of the class instead of all groups - Use a time watcher or have an accompanied teacher give signal when the time is over Teaching aids: Board, chalk, textbook, slideshow, markers, A3 paper Procedures: Stages/ Time 1.Warm up (4 minutes) Interaction Patterns Activities T→C * min: Giving instruction - A teacher asks the whole class to look at pictures in the handout - T shows each picture on a slide again for the whole class - T asks students to think about the meaning of each picture * mins: Students’ talking about pictures - T lets students talk about what they know about each picture * min: Matching to check answers - T asks the whole class to match each picture with its meaning and check answers New lesson Activity (5 minutes) T→ C S,S,S T→ C Activity (11 minutes) * mins: Pre-reading - T and the whole class this exercise together (based on their prediction) + Sentence & 2: let they guess and ask for reason + Sentence & 4: provide some information for them to guess - T asks the whole class to scan the text (on the right side) and underline evidence * min: While-reading - Students scan the text and underline evidence * mins: Post-reading - T asks them for evidence to check answers - T shows answers on the slide for the whole class Read about one country, either the UK or Russia, noting down the most interesting things about that country Group work *1 min: Teacher divides class into groups and gives instruction: Each group notes down the most interesting things about countries ( groups work on UK, groups work on Russia) *4 min: Students the task in group of or *0.5 min: Teacher instructs students to use expressions in example on page 20 to share information *5 min: Based on the note, students share their idea with other members of their group Activity (10 minutes) Pair Work Group Work Activity (12 minutes) Group work Share with each other what you have learnt about traditions and customs of either the UK or Russia *1.0 min: Form students into big groups of UK and another is Russia Based on the notes on the board, students have 1-minute preparation before sharing with the whole class with the example instructions *6.0 min: Each group send one representative to talk about their assigned country’s tradition in maximum minutes * 3.0 min: After the mini presentations, others from different group will choose the most intriguing facts of other country to them *1.0 min: Teachers giving feedback and raising questions if any Work in groups.Each group makes a list of popular foods and drinks, popular sports, and festivals in Vietnam.Rank them in the order of popularity and present them to the whole class *1 min: Ask the whole class about Vietnamese popular food/drink/sport/festival in general *2 mins: - Divide the whole class into groups: Students sitting in closest tables team up in one group - Assign topics for each group (shown on slide): + group 1: popular foods + group 2: popular drinks + group 3: popular sports + group 4: popular festivals - Introduce the way which can be used to present each group’s idea after working with each other:a visual presentation (draw pictures of the thing they want to talk about> present about that thing - remember to show the audience the picture clearly) *3 mins:Students work with each other *4 mins:2 groups will be picked to present their ideas (2 mins for each group) While these two groups go to present on the board, the other groups take note their strong points and mistakes that need correcting * mins: Peer feedback + teacher’s feedback Homework (2 minutes) T→ C * min: Recall what students have learnt: -
