the remap Value utility also provides a Color gradient. the Color gradient is controlled by the input Value attribute. that is, if a texture mapped to the input Value attribute provides the color black, the left side of the Color gradient is sampled. if a texture mapped to the input Value attribute provides the color white, the right side of the Color gradient is sampled. Hence, the remap Value utility supports an additional method of blending two sources together.

frequency reuse schemes on the spectral e ffi ciency without network MIMO, as opposed to the fixed frequency reuse pattern considered here. While this paper addresses some concerns over the viability of network MIMO in practice, several others remain, especially in the context of a larger-scale outdoor cellular deployment. Foremost among these are the band- width and latency requirements on the backhaul network connecting the access points to each other (or to a central processor), to facilitate the exchange of user data, channel state information, control signaling, and so forth. It would also be desirable to distribute the computation required to implement network MIMO among many nodes, so that the solution scales well with the size of the network. Finally, in a low-SNR environment, estimating the channels to/from faraway access points without excessive pilot overhead might require data-aided channel estimation algorithms. Further work is needed in all these areas to make network MIMO truly practical.

Can we make use of the windowing functions that have been developed for 1D signals, to define a windowing function for images? Once we have decided upon a good window in the l-dimensional case, the extension to two dimensions is not hazard-freẹ One must have in mind that if W ( . ) is a good l-dimensional window, its circularly symmetric version w ( r ) W ( d m ) does not have the same frequency response as w(x). In other words, the Fourier transform of the circularly symmetric window is not the circular version of the Fourier transform of the l-dimensional window. This was discussed extensively earlier in this chapter (see also Figure 5.2).

However, we can set the timeout attribute in the <forms> element to over-ride this setting. This means that they will be able to leave the site and come back to it again within 30 minutes providing that they haven't closed their browser (or deleted the cookie). Of course, as the user accesses pages within the site, the cookie will be updated with each response from the server, and so the timeout only comes into force the specified number of minutes after the last time they accessed a page. But, even if they leave their browser running, they will be effectively "logged out" after the timeout period. This provides a better level of security.

seen in children with sickle cell crises. Rupture of the spleen, from either trauma or infiltrative disease that breaks the capsule, may result in intraperitoneal bleeding, shock, and death. The rupture itself may be painless. A palpable spleen is the major physical sign produced by diseases affecting the spleen and suggests enlargement of the organ. The normal spleen is said to weigh <250 g, decreases in size with age, normally lies entirely within the rib cage, has a maximum cephalocaudad diameter of 13 cm by ultrasonography or maximum length of 12 cm and/or width of 7 cm by radionuclide scan, and is usually not palpable. However, a palpable spleen was found in 3% of 2200 asymptomatic, male, freshman college students. Follow-up at 3 years revealed that 30% of those students still had a palpable spleen without any increase in disease prevalence. Ten-year follow-up found no evidence for lymphoid malignancies. Furthermore, in some tropical countries (e.g., New Guinea) the incidence of splenomegaly may reach 60%. Thus, the presence of a palpable spleen does not always equate with presence of disease. Even when disease is present, splenomegaly may not reflect the primary disease but rather a reaction to it. For example, in patients with Hodgkin's disease, only two-thirds of the palpable spleens show involvement by the cancer.

FeCrO4 , tridymite SiO2 and zircon ZrSiO4 by their characteristic form and colour. As birefringence occurs within the crystal, each incident ray forms ordinary and extraordinary rays which are polarized in different planes and travel through the crystal at different velocities. On leaving the analyser, these out-of-phase ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ rays combine to produce the polarization colour. This colour is complementary to colour cancelled by interference and follows Newton’s sequence: yellow, orange, red, violet, blue, green. More delicate, higher- order colours are produced as the phase difference between the emergent rays increases. Anisotropic crystals are either uniaxial or biaxial, having one or two optic axes, respectively, along which birefringence does not occur. (Optic axes do not necessarily correspond with crystallographic axes.) It is therefore possible for quartz (uniaxial) and mica (biaxial) crystals to appear black because of their orientation in the slice. Uniaxial (tetragonal and hexagonal systems) can be distinguished from biaxial crystals (orthorhombic, triclinic and monoclinic systems) by introducing a Bertrand lens into the light train of the microscope to give a convergent beam, rotating the stage and comparing their interference figures: uniaxial crystals give a moving ‘ring and brush’ pattern, biaxial crystals give two static ‘eyes’. Cubic crystals are isotropic, being highly symmetrical. Glassy phases are isotropic and also appear black between crossed polars; however, glass containing residual stresses from rapid cooling produces fringe patterns and polarization colours. The stress-anisotropic properties of plastics are utilized in photoelastic analyses of transparent models of engineering structures or components made from standard sheets of constant thickness and stress-

The fine structure of crystalline regions in commer- cial polymers and their relation to associated amor- phous regions have been the subject of much research. An important advance was made in the 1950s when single crystals of polyethylene were produced for the first time. A typical method of preparation is to dissolve < 0 . 01% PE in xylene at a temperature of 135 – 138 ° C and then cool slowly to 70 – 80 ° C. The small PE crystals that precipitate are several microns across and only 10 – 20 nm thick. The thick- ness of these platey crystals (lamellae) is temperature- dependent. Diffraction studies by transmission electron microscope showed that, surprisingly, the axes of the chain molecules were approximately perpendicular to the two large faces of each lamella. In view of the smallness of the crystal thickness relative to the aver- age length of molecules, it was deduced that multiple chain-folding had occurred during crystallization from the mother liquor. In other words, a molecule could exhibit an extended and/or folded conformation. The chain-folding model has been disputed but is now generally accepted. The exact nature of the fold sur- face has also been the subject of much debate; typical models for folding are shown in Figure 2.28. The mea- sured density of these single crystals is less than the theoretical value; this feature indicates that irregular arrangements exist at fold surfaces and that the crystal itself contains defects. Most of the folds or loops are tight and each requires only two or three repeat units of molecular structure. ‘Loose’ loops of larger radius and chain ends (cilia) project from the surfaces of lamel- lae. These fundamental studies on single crystals had a far-reaching effect upon polymer physics, compara- ble in importance to that of single metal crystals upon metallurgical science.

plasmid, which can flit from one type of bacterium to another. A single plasmid can provide a slew of different resistances. E Many of us have come to take antibiotics for granted. A child develops a sore throat or an ear infection, and soon a bottle of pink medicine makes everything better. Linda McCaig, a scientist at the CDC, comments that “many consumers have an expectation that when they’re ill, antibiotics are the answer. Most of the time the illness is viral, and antibiotics are not the answer. This large burden of antibiotics is certainly selecting resistant bacteria.” McCaig and Peter Killeen, a fellow scientist at the CDC, tracked antibiotic use in treating common illnesses. The report cites nearly 6 million antibiotic prescriptions for sinusitis alone in 1985, and nearly 13 million in 1992. Ironically, advances in modern medicine have made more people predisposed to infection. McCaig notes that “there are a number of immunocompromised patients who wouldn’t have survived in earlier times. Radical procedures produce patients who are in difficult shape in the hospital, and there is routine use of antibiotics to prevent infection in these patients.”

b) Again, one gets exactly the same equations for a converging lens rather than a concave mirror because the equations are identical. The difference lies in the interpretation of the results. For a lens, the outgoing side is not that on which the object lies, unlike for a mirror. So for an object on the left side of the lens, a positive image distance means that the image is on the right of the lens, and a negative image distance means that the image is on the left side of the lens.

n σ = are highlighted. 7. Conclusions The chapter examines the overall effect, in terms of effective resolution, of input noise and output averaging in linear DAS. The analysis applies to both the cases of unwanted system noise, and of noise purposely added to increase the performance (non-subtractive dithering). After a brief discussion of the ENOB figure of merit, the equations to determine the ENOB in various situations are derived and validated by simulations. The results clarify the nature of the acquisition error in presence of noise – in terms of “dithered quantization error” e qd and “randomized quantization error” e qr – and can be used, for example, to choose the optimal level of input noise in a non-subtractive dithering scheme. The choice is demonstrated to be non-trivial, even if quite simple with the use of the proper equations. In particular, the very common choice σ n = 0.5 LSB is demonstrated to be suboptimal in most practical cases.

Phil could achieve much the same results by choosing an LLC, rather than a subchapter S corporation. Unfortunately, however, many states require that an LLC have two or more members, making Phil’s business ineligible. In states which allow single-member LLCs, there would be little to recommend one choice over the other. Phil might feel more comfortable with an S corpo- ration, however, if he fears that suppliers, customers, and potential employees might be put off by the relative novelty of the LLC. This might especially be true if he has any plans to eventually go public, as the LLC has not gained wide acceptance in the public markets. An S corporation can then usually revoke its S election without undue negative tax effect. Beginning as an S corporation would also eliminate the need to reincorporate as a corporation prior to selling the business in a potentially tax-free transaction.

DOES HIGH PUBLIC DEBT CONSISTENTLY STIFE ECONOMIC GROWTH A CRITIQUE OF REINHART AND ROGO FF PPTX

4 Conclusion The influence of RR’s findings comes from its straightforward, intuitive use of data to construct a stylized fact characterizing the relationship between public debt and GDP growth for a range of national economies. However, this laudable effort at clarity notwithstanding, RR has made significant errors in reaching the conclusion that countries facing public debt to GDP ratios above 90 percent will experience a major decline in GDP growth. 9 The key identified errors in RR, including spreadsheet errors, omission of available data, weighting, and transcription, reduced the measured average GDP growth of countries in the high public debt category. The full extent of those errors transforms the reality of modestly diminished average GDP growth rates for countries carrying high levels of public debt into a false image that high public debt ratios inevitably entail sharp declines in GDP growth. Moreover, as we show, there is a wide range of GDP growth performances at every level of public debt among the 20 advanced economies that RR survey.

GAME THEORY THOMAS S. FERGUSON POT

GAME THEORY THOMAS S. FERGUSON POT

There are two main references for the material on combinatorial games. One is the research book, On Numbers and Games by J. H. Conway, Academic Press, 1976. This book introduced many of the basic ideas of the subject and led to a rapid growth of the area that continues today. The other reference, more appropriate for this class, is the two-volume book, Winning Ways for your mathematical plays by Berlekamp, Conway and Guy, Academic Press, 1982, in paperback. There are many interesting games described in this book and much of it is accessible to the undergraduate mathematics student. This theory may be divided into two parts, impartial games in which the set of moves available from any given position is the same for both players, and partizan games in which each player has a different set of possible moves from a given position. Games like chess or checkers in which one player moves the white pieces and the other moves the black pieces are partizan. In Part I, we treat only the theory of impartial games. An elementary introduction to impartial combinatorial games is given in the book Fair Game by Richard K. Guy, published in the COMAP Mathematical Exploration Series, 1989. We start with a simple example.

The best olive oils hold a certificate by an independent organization that authenticates the stone ground and cold pressed extraction process. In this process, olives are first harvested by hand at the proper stage of ripeness and maturity. Experts feel that hand harvesting, as opposed to mechanical harvesting, eliminates bruising of the fruit which causes tartness and oil acidity. The olives harvested are transferred daily to the mill. This is very important because this daily transfer minimizes the time spent between picking and pressing. Some extra virgin olive oil producers are known to transfer the olives by multi-ton trucks over long distances that expose the fragile fruit to crushing weight and the hot sun, which causes the olives to begin oxidizing and thus becoming acidic. In addition to the time lapse between harvesting and pressing, olive oil must be obtained using mechanical processes only to be considered virgin or extra virgin. If heat and/or chemical processes are used to produce the olive oil or if the time lapse is too long, it cannot be called virgin or extra virgin.
