2. Choose the best answer for each question. Since life began eons ago, thousands of creatures have come and gone. Some, such as the dinosaurs, became extinct due to naturally changing ecologic conditions. More recent threats to life forms are humans and their activities. Man has drained marshes, burned prairies, damned and diverted rivers. Some of the more recent casualties of man's expansion have been the dodo, great auk, passenger pigeon, Irish elk, and Steller's sea cow. Sadly, we can no longer attribute the increasing decline in our wild animals and plant species to "natural" processes. Many species are dying out because of exploitation, habitat alteration or destruction, pollution, or the introduction of new species of plants and animals to an area. As mandated by Congress, protecting endangered species, and restoring them to the point where their existence is no longer jeopardized, is the primary objective of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Program.

Simulating physics with inverse Kinematics Now that you’ve animated the undulating water beneath the crane, it would be nice to see the red buoy move along the surface as well. You could create a motion tween so it travels along the water. However, since the buoy has a flexible flag attached, it’ll be more realistic to see the flag and the pole wave and bend as the buoy moves. Flash Professional CS5 introduces a new feature for inverse kinematics called Spring that helps you do this easily.

Thompson is right to note Thelwall’s moral courage and theor- etical acumen, but his sense of Thelwall’s rejection of ‘educational gradualism’ – a policy Thompson identifies with Francis Place – in favour of ‘an unlimited agitation’, must be balanced against Thelwall’s own emphasis on the necessity of an unlimited exchange of ideas if radical politics were to be pursued in the name of genuine liberty. 57 Thelwall’s remarks need to be read as heavily coded political rhetoric designed to elicit particular responses on specific occasions. But even so, his commitment to ‘principles’ reflects a sophisticated sense of just how much was at stake in the attempt to appropriate Enlightenment concepts, embraced by middle-class reformers such as William Godwin, on behalf of social classes who, Godwin warned, were not presumed to be able to appreciate the difference between ideas and actions. If Thompson underestimates Thelwall’s commitment to an Enlightenment vision of reform, he is probably closer to the mark in his identification of Francis Place with that side of the radical reform movement which stressed educational approaches ahead of more activist forms of intervention. Writing his autobiography in 1824 , Place chose to concentrate on the capacity of the LCS to achieve personal rather than political reform by stressing the seemingly apolitical lesson of the importance of self-improvement and the moral integrity of the individual:

instinctual drives. It may be asked how restraints on instinctual demands serve to coordinate the activities of larger numbers. As an example, continued obedience to the command to treat all men as neighbours would have prevented the growth of an extended order. For those now living within the extended order gain from not treating one another as neighbours, and by applying, in their interactions, rules of the extended order - such as those of several property and contract - instead of the rules of solidarity and altruism. An order in which everyone treated his neighbour as himself would be one where comparatively few could be fruitful and multiply. If we were, say, to respond to all charitable appeals that bombard us through the media, this would exact a heavy cost in distracting us from what we are most competent to do, and likely only make us the tools of particular interest groups or of peculiar views of the relative importance of particular needs. It would not provide a proper cure for misfortunes about which we are understandably concerned. Similarly, instinctual aggressiveness towards outsiders must be curbed if identical abstract rules are to apply to the relations of all men, and thus to reach across boundaries - even the boundaries of states.

gargantuan investment pools the next time they hit the fund-raising trail. Another factor magni ed the e ect: the quotas big pension funds and other investors set for private equity. The mix of institutions investing in buyout funds looked very di erent in the 2000s from what it had when Peterson and Schwarzman rst went rapping on doors in 1986 and 1987. Back then they called rst on insurance companies and Japanese banks and brokerage houses. Only at the end did they raise money from two corporate pension funds, General Motors’ and General Electric’s. By the late 1990s, banks and insurers together were providing only 15 percent or so of the money in buyout and venture funds, and state and local government pension funds had emerged as the leading backers of buyouts, furnishing roughly half the investment capital. The typical pension fund still kept half or more of its money in ordinary stocks, and a large slice in bonds, but pension managers increasingly were adhering to an economic model known as modern portfolio theory. This taught that overall returns could be maximized by layering in small amounts of nontraditional, high-returning assets such as buyout, venture, and hedge funds and real estate. Although they were riskier and illiquid (the investor’s money was tied up longer), adding these so-called alternative assets diversi ed a pension portfolio so that the overall risks were no greater, the theory held.

THE PRACTICE & SCIENCE OF DRAWING PHẦN 2 POTX

Plate VIII. STUDY FOR A PICTURE In red conté chalk and white pastel rubbed on toned paper. The visual blindness of the majority of people is greatly to be deplored, as nature is ever offering them on their retina, even in the meanest slum, a music of colour and form that is a constant source of pleasure to those who can see it. But so many are content to use this wonderful faculty of vision for utilitarian purposes only. It is the privilege of the artist to show how wonderful and beautiful is all this music of colour and form, so that people, having been moved by it in his work, may be encouraged to see the same beauty in the things around them. This is the best argument in favour of making art a subject of general education: that it should teach people to see. Everybody does not need to draw and paint, but if everybody could get the faculty of appreciating the form and colour on their retinas as form and colour, what a wealth would always be at their disposal for enjoyment! The Japanese habit of looking at a landscape upside down between their legs is a way of seeing without the deadening influence of touch associations. Thus looking, one is surprised into seeing for once the colour and form of things with the association of touch for the moment forgotten, and is puzzled at the beauty. The odd thing is that although thus we see things upside down, the pictures on our retinas are for once the right way up; for ordinarily the visual picture is inverted on the retina, like that on the ground glass at the back of a photographic camera.

Meggie followed the dwindling forms of her brothers at a run. It was a little after seven o’clock in the morning, and the gentle sun had been up several hours; the dew had dried off the grass ex- cept where there was deep shade. The Wahine road was a wheel- rutted earthen track, two ribbons of dark red separated by a wide band of bright green grass. White calla lilies and orange nasturtiums flowered profusely in the high grass to either side, where the neat wooden fences of bordering properties warned against trespassing. Bob always walked to school along the top of the right-hand fences, balancing his leather satchel on his head instead of wearing it haversack style. The left-hand fence belonged to Jack, which permitted the three younger Clearys domain of the road itself. At the top of the long, steep hill they had to climb from the smithy hollow to where the Robertson road joined the Wahine road, they paused for a moment, panting, the five bright heads haloed against a puffily clouded sky. This was the best part, going down the hill; they linked hands and galloped on the grassy verge until it vanished in a tangle of flowers, wishing they had the time to sneak under Mr. Chapman’s fence and roll all the way down like boulders.

THE CONVENTION IN A UTILITARIAN LIGHT

THE CONVENTION IN A UTILITARIAN LIGHT

The unit of intensity is the faintest sensation that can be distinguished to be pleasure or pain; the unit of duration is a moment of time. Degrees of intensity and duration are to be counted in whole numbers, as multiples of these units. Certainty and propinquity are reckoned as fractions whose limit is immediate actual sensation; from this limit the fractions fall away. In applying the calculus, one begins with the first distinguishable pleasure or pain which appears to be produced by an act, multiplies the number of its intensity units by the number of durations units, and then multiplies this product by the two fractions expressing certainty and proximity. To bring in fecundity one computes by the preceding method the value of each pleasure or each pain which appears to be produced after the first one; the resulting values are to be added to the value previously obtained. To bring in purity one computes the values of all pains that attend a given series of pleasures, or of pleasures that attend a given series of pains; these values are to be subtracted from the preceding sums. That is, pleasure is a positive, pain a negative quantity. Since the unit of extent is an individual, one completes the computation by multiplying the net resultant pain or pleasure ascertained as above by the number of individuals affected. Usually however this last step is more complicated: not all people affected are affected in the same way. In that case one does not multiply by the number of individuals, but makes a separate computation for each individual and then strikes the algebraic sum of the resultants. 111
