15 20 25 Martin Luther King, Jr., is well known for his work in civil rights and for his many famous speeches, among them his moving "I Have A Dream" speech. But fewer people know much about King's childhood. MI ., as he was called, was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the home of his maternal grandfather. M.L.'s grandfather, the Reverend A.D. Williams, purchased their home on Auburn Avenue in 1909, twenty years before M.L. was born. The Reverend Williams, an eloquent speaker, played an important role in the community since so many people's lives centered around the church. He allowed his church and his home to be used as a meeting place for a number of organizations dedicated to the education and social advancement of blacks. M.L. grew up in this atmosphere, with his home being used as a community gathering place, and was no doubt influenced by it.

PRACTICAL SPELLING POTX

PRACTICAL SPELLING POTX

Each lesson introduces ten or more spelling words, selected to help you learn each lesson’s particular spelling skill or strategy. Each Exercise 1 throughout this book instructs you to look closely at the dif- ferences in words and locate their common letters. When you see this picture of an eye-hand connection, it symbolizes looking carefully across a line of words. This is called eyeballing the spelling words . Sometimes, you will be instructed to cir- cle the one word in a line that doesn’t match the others. Other times, you’ll be asked to circle the common letters in the remaining words. This eye-hand movement allows you to see the similarities and differences in words.

raw material required, and that one must submit to the disutility of labor in order to transform these raw materials into shoes. The catallactic competition of those who, like me, are eager to have shoes makes shoes cheaper, not more expensive. This is the meaning of the theorem of the harmony of the rightly understood interests of all members of the market society. 6 When the classical economists made this statement, they were trying to stress two points: First, that everybody is interested in the preservation of the social division of labor, the system that multiplies the productivity of human efforts. Second, that in the market society consumers’ demand ultimately directs all production activities. The fact that not all human wants can be satisfied is not due to inappropriate social institutions or to deficiencies of the system of the market economy. It is a natural condition of human life. The belief that nature bestows upon man inexhaustible riches and that misery is an outgrowth of man’s failure to organize the good society is entirely fallacious. The “state of nature” which the reformers and utopians depicted as paradisiac was in fact a state of extreme poverty and distress. “Poverty,” says Bentham, “is not the work of the laws, it is the primitive condition of the human race.” 7 Even those at the base of the social pyramid are much better off than they would have been in the absence of social cooperation. They too are benefitted by the operation of the market economy and participate in the advantages of civilized society.

There are a number of ways we can help our government reduce water pollution. We can teach ourselves, our families and neighbors how to save water. We can educate them about the dangers of household chemicals that may contaminate our drinking water. Also, we can involve ourselves in environmental protection activities (e.g., watershed-protection projects) and attend seminars on toxic waste management sponsored by environmental organizations or our government. Such seminars will teach us the proper handling or disposal of excess paints, thinners, pesticides, used oil and other toxic materials.

No one can say when sports began. Since it is impossible to (36) ____ a time when children did not spontaneously run races or wrestle, it is clear that children have always included sports in their play, but one can only speculate about the (37) ____ of sports as autotelic physical contests for (38) ____. Hunters are depicted in prehistoric art, but it cannot be known (39) ____ the hunters pursued their prey in a mood of grim necessity or with the joyful abandon of sportsmen. It is certain, (40) _____, from the rich literary and iconographic evidence of all ancient civilizations that hunting soon became an end in itself at least for royalty and nobility. Archaeological evidence also indicates that ball games were common among ancient peoples as (41) ____ as the Chinese and the Aztecs. If ball games were contests rather than (42) ____ ritual performances, such as the Japanese football game kemari, then they were sports in the most rigorously (43) ____ sense. That it cannot (44) ____ be assumed that they were contests is clear from the evidence presented by Greek and Roman antiquity, which indicates that ball games had been for the most part playful pastimes (45) _____ those recommended for health by the Greek physician Galen in the 2 nd century AD.

BRITISH ENGLISH A TO Z PAST 3

At one time, most British villages and towns had an early closing day. This custom is observed in a few parts of America, but even in those towns there are often nonconforming individual holdouts, a practice rare in Britain. In the smaller Brit- ish villages and towns, all the shops closed for lunch, usually from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 2:15 p.m. every day, but on early closing day they shut at 1:00. for good. This is now rarer in Britain than it once was, but early closing can still catch out passing tourists.
