The final hypothesis I looked at was that of the “reboot phenomenon.” This would explain my experience as an assembly of essentially disjointed memories and thoughts left over from before my cortex went completely down. This might occur on restarting the cortex into consciousness after a prolonged system-wide failure, as in my diffuse meningitis. But this seems most unlikely given the intricacies and interactivity of my elaborate recollections. Because I experienced the nonlinear nature of time in the spiritual world so intensely, I can now understand why so much writing on the spiritual dimension can seem distorted or simply nonsensical from our earthly perspective. In the worlds above this one, time simply doesn’t behave as it does here. It’s not necessarily one-thing-after-another in those worlds. A moment can seem like a lifetime, and one or several lifetimes can seem like a moment. But though time doesn’t behave ordinarily (in our terms) in the worlds beyond, that doesn’t mean it’s jumbled, and my own recollections from my time in coma were anything but. My most this-worldly anchors in my experience, temporally speaking, were my interactions with Susan Reintjes when she contacted me on my fourth and fifth nights, and the appearance, toward the end of my journey, of those six faces. Any other appearance of temporal simultaneity between events on earth and my journey beyond it are, you might say, purely conjectural!

The setting of an event-based adventure is often a city (though it can be anything). An event-based structure works well for urban adventures because you don’t have to map every building in the city. What’s important is whom the characters interact with. How- ever, you can also use this structure for outdoor or dungeon encounters, particularly in cases where the opponents are organized and intelligent, rather than dumb brutes who lurk in their dungeon lairs until characters come along to fight. Consider an ancient ruin now inhabited by three different factions: yuan-ti in one quarter, minotaurs in another, and drow in the cellars, sewers, and caverns below. Such an adventure has an element of exploration, but more interesting is how the characters might play the three factions against each other, making the events of the adventure far more important than the setting—particularly since the inhabitants of the ruin move around regularly, rather than appearing in fixed encounter locations. Certain points on the event flowchart for your adventure might be sites—small dungeons or just city building. At those points, you set the flowchart “adventure map” aside and turn to a smaller map, let the characters explore that site and complete the encounters there, then return to the flowchart, follow- ing one branch or another depending on the outcome of those encounters. These mini-dungeons are a good way to vary the pace and feel of the adventure and so to appeal to different player motivations.

Anyway, money’s not so good now that I have to save for a new computer. I don’t want to cut corners and buy a cheap computer, because I’d just have to replace it soon anyway.

A feature of dynamic_cast, which is sometimes also the cause of erroneous code, is that it behaves differently depending on the type with which it is used. dynamic_cast tHRows an exceptionstd::bad_castif the conversion is not possible when used on a reference type. The reason for the exception is simple. There is no such thing as a null reference in C++, so either the conversion succeeds and the result is a valid reference or it fails and you get an exception instead. Of course, when using dynamic_cast to convert a pointer type, failure is indicated by returning the null pointer.
