Aayush Tuli March 21, 2020 Reflection #3: Interviewing/Networking Event Interviewing Strategies is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o co m In the first week of this semester, I attended a Citi Investment Banking recruiting event in the hopes of building my network and learning about a career at Citi I found this event through Handshake, simply selecting events brought up all the events scheduled for this semester, I was sure to RSVP for all the ones I was interested in and thankfully was able to RSVP for this Citi event before it filled up (it was first come first serve) There were many events having that first week, but I chose to attend Citi after thoroughly reading and deciding that Citi would be the optimal event for me to not only build my connections but also have a practice run-though Of all the companies hosting networking events, I was least inclined to work at Citi They did not have the work culture I was searching for and all in all I did not believe I would be a good fit there, but if I was striving for Investment Banking at all, an incredibly competitive field, I could not be picky By choosing Citi, I would be able to use this event to develop a strong foundation for future events and hopefully be a veteran at networking events by the time I got to one hosted by a company I was far more interested in Nevertheless, every opportunity is one for learning, and I got to it to put my all into networking at this event and learn as much as I could I had many takeaways from this event, namely one for maintaining a conversation with a professional without losing them to the sea of other students looking to network as well While it is easy to simply barrage the professional with a multitude of questions, asking them to spell out for you their every responsibility in their position, I opted for a less instinctive approach sh Th First, I would ask a question about them, what brought them to this event or how long they’ve been at the company, and then I would drop work related questions altogether Next, I would begin talking about myself vaguely, try to find some commonality with anything they said to me but if not I would simply express sincere interest in whatever small tidbit of information they provided I got this technique from an article I read, I centered myself in the professionals focus as fast as I could (before the onslaught of questions from other students) before I began the conversation Once the pleasantries would be aside, I would bring up some piece of news in their industry, if they were in pharmaceuticals I would ask them their opinion on the FDA’s new phase trial sequencing, if they were in infrastructure I would ask them their opinion on recent highway cement supplier IPOs, etc etc By making the conversation seem like it was one they were having with a coworker and not an “intern”, my hope was to leave them with an impression of me as a peer rather than an underling, demonstrating to them that I would not need a great deal of mentoring to be successful in their position and would be able to add a lot Once the conversation was in full swing, I would try to transition the conversation into something a little less professional to make sure they knew that while I would be a great asset to their firm, I also am a lot of fun to have around If they begin to open up as I talk to them about fun times in college, I would begin talking to them about going out and crazy party stories We’re all human at the end of the day, and there’s no one size fits all approach to all individuals, each person values different things and it’s my job to cater to those different traits Therefore, my This study source was downloaded by 100000803432715 from CourseHero.com on 10-26-2021 11:30:26 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/73581465/Reflection-3-Network-Eventdocx/ approach would not be synonymous for every professional I talked to, I would maintain an adaptive conversation style for every professional I encountered sh Th is ar stu ed d vi y re aC s o ou urc rs e eH w er as o co m This event was not without its challenges, however, and one of the biggest challenges I faced was the time constraint They always say it’s better to have a few meaningful conversations with people at a networking events than a multitude that aren’t very meaningful However, it is important you don’t spend the entire time talking to only one, and that is a challenge I have to work to overcome For that, I will simply need to remind myself it is not rude to leave a conversation to go meet other professionals, this event is for building a network, not just making a single friend This study source was downloaded by 100000803432715 from CourseHero.com on 10-26-2021 11:30:26 GMT -05:00 https://www.coursehero.com/file/73581465/Reflection-3-Network-Eventdocx/ Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
