Gần hai năm kể từ 2011 xuất hiện, Microsoft phát hành ứng dụng Windows Essentials 2012 (hay Wave 5) với số cải tiến thú vị mặt tính năng.
Windows Essentials 2012 tương thích với Windows 7/8 bao gồm ứng dụng giống Windows Live Essentials 2011, gồm Messenger (trình chat dành cho tài khoản Windows Live, chat liên thông với Yahoo! Messenger), Photo Gallery (quản lý chỉnh sửa hình ảnh), Movie Maker (biên tập video, tạo video trình diễn hình ảnh có sẵn câu chuyện), Windows LiveMail (quản lý duyệt nhiều tài khoản email lúc), Writer (viết blog đăng lên nhiều dịch vụ Windows Live Space, Blogger, WordPress, Typepad, Live Journal, Joomla…), Outlook Conector Pack (kết nối đến tài khoản Windows Live từ Microsoft Outlook)
