INTRODUCTION The purpose of this book is to provide a convenient source of environmental information to the users of Sittig’s Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, 4th Edition, edited by Richard Pohanish It is a direct companion to Sittig in that for most of the chemicals described in Sittig’s two volumes, this International Resources Guide presents the manufacturers of those substances This book is intended for chemists, toxicologists, laboratory technicians, manufacturers, safety professionals and government personnel involved in environmental and industrial safety and health matters The ability to identify the actual manufacturers of hazardous materials is important where detailed background information is required when investigating chemical accidents, exposures, product contamination, faulty labeling and other incidents involving chemicals and their effect on workers or the environment This International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals also includes resources for chemical, environmental and industrial safety and hygiene information: chemical industry associations, international government environmental agencies, United States environmental agencies, State agencies, Poison Control Centers, and a guide to Hotlines, Databases, and Useful Web sites Many resources were used to compile the information in this book The hazardous chemicals listed here are taken from Sittig, 4th Edition For a few chemicals in Sittig, their makers are not listed, perhaps because they are made in such limited quantities that they are sold through specialty middlemen and catalog houses The primary resources for preparing the list of manufacturers in this book were (1) the Web sites of the companies, (2) membership in special sections of United States chemical societies, the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and societies in India, Japan, Asia, Italy and elsewhere, and (3) sites in which companies register themselves as producers of particular products, such as the Thomas Directories in the U.S and Europe, the American Chemical Society ChemCyclopedia, and the British Chemical Industries Association Chemextra Direct access to these sites are quickly available to any Internet user They are listed in Section VII – Hotlines, Databases and Useful Web Sites Finally, a caveat: no listing of manufacturers of hazardous chemicals can ever be complete Indeed, the situation changes daily Just during the preparation of this material, many major producers of chemicals, petrochemicals, and agro chemicals were merged, combined and ultimately divested First they combine, then they spin off product lines, they then rename themselves in the current fad of the day Phillips Petroleum announced a union with Conoco, to become Conoco Phillips Dow Chemical bought Union Carbide Henkel in Germany bought Cognis, and has spun it off Monsanto spun off its chemical business into Solutia Monsanto was merged into Pharmacia and now will be spun off as a pure agricultural chemical business Pharmacia will keep the pharmaceutical end of Monsanto Ciba and Sandoz formed Novartis The agricultural chemicals of Novartis, together with AstraZeneca agro chemicals formed Syngenta, a Swiss firm Rhone-Poulenc merged with Hoechst to form Aventis; the resulting agro chemical portion will be sold to Bayer of Germany The lines between pharmaceuticals, chemicals and agriculture sciences continue to come together, then widen Therefore, when seeking out a manufacturer of the substance in which you have an interest, use these lists for the beginning of your search and jump into the world wide web This book is divided into eight sections: SECTION I HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS AND THEIR MANUFACTURERS The chemical industry has been a prime focus for global consolidations wherein the same generic chemical products may be produced world-wide, using different trade names in different countries Also, different subsidiaries may produce and/or market the same products in various countries Moreover, there are constant spin-offs and consolidations of product lines among companies The companies listed here for each chemical may be either the U.S parent, subsidiary or division, or a foreign parent company or its units Subsidiaries and/or affiliates of parent companies have been limited to major product line companies or operating groups; they not include non-chemical producing units or foreign subsidiaries established to trade or manufacture in individual countries Most major corporations establish separate subsidiaries or affiliates to operate in each foreign land and many of these entities produce or sell the same products, often under different trade names For such entities, only the parent companies are listed Many products are produced in small quantities, in technical, reagent or laboratory purity grades Consequently, many of the manufacturers included in this list are specialists and perhaps not as well known as are the larger, international companies We have attempted to make this an international list covering a representative number of large, medium and small producers in various areas of the world Atlantic Refining merged with Amoco, which was bought by BP P.L.C BP Amoco became BP P.L.C Texaco was merged with Chevron to become ChevronTexaco The chemicals are listed in straight alphabetical order, letter by letter Compounds consisting of two or more words are compiled as if they were a single word Prefixes and numerals are disregarded in the alphabetizing In cases were prefixes are an integral part of the chemical’s name they are placed in normal alphabetical order (bis-, cyclo-, di-, iso-, neo-, tetra-, tri-) Trade marks or proprietary names are indicated by all capital letters followed by a registered mark (®), and the name of its primary ingredient Companies without country designation are headquartered in the United States International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals E-mail All companies have the ability to receive e-mail, but some are coy about how they present the information on their Web sites Look for the phrase “Contact us” which will lead you to the e-mail address itself, which will be listed here in the reference Instead, some sites will lead you to a request form asking for some information about yourself or your company which you may or may not wish to reveal A click will then send your question to the company, in which case no e-mail address is given, so none will be shown here in the company listing Web site SECTION II INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF MANUFACTURERS OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS The companies listed in this section are engaged in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, petroleum refining, petrochemical manufacturing, mining and mineral refining As much as possible, brokers, trading companies, distributors, importers and exporters, manufacturers’ representatives, e-commerce companies, blenders and catalog houses have been omitted However, some distributors and catalog houses also have their own production facilities for portions of their offerings and they have been included Nevertheless, users of this list should consider the companies as only a starting point for further inquiries The Directory contains information on more than 1,500 companies, arranged alphabetically within the country in which they are headquartered Company name The name by which the company is legally registered is the entry used in this book Companies that have merged are listed with a cross reference to the successor company where the complete contact information is given Companies or principal product units or divisions are also crossreferenced to the parent company and country in which it is headquartered Most international companies have scores of subsidiaries and divisions operating throughout the world, some making the same products and/or marketing them in different countries and under different trade names; e.g., see Imperial Chemical Industry (ICI) and BHP Billiton in the U.K, DuPont and Dow Chemical, BASF and Bayer in Germany, ATOFINA in France, Azko Nobel Chemical in The Netherlands, Sasol Group in South Africa, Asahi Glass, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Sumitomo Chemicals in Japan The parent company’s Web site will provide portals to its products, subsidiaries, and individual country Web sites Address, telephone and fax numbers Where available, both the mailing and location addresses are given Telephone and fax numbers are preceded with their country’s International Calling Code The site used for obtaining information for this book Use this site to explore further details about the company and its products, history, management structure, subsidiaries, investor information and other useful background Some companies, particularly Japanese chemical firms, have nifty tutorials about their products and manufacturing processes Stock listing For public companies, the major stock exchange for their listing and their identification number or symbol are given If a company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ, it is listed, along with their primary foreign exchange if they are a foreign company The major exchange for German companies is the Frankfurt Stock Exchange; for India, the Bombay Stock Exchange; for Japan, the Tokyo Stock Exchange; for France, the Paris Bourse Parent company The parent company is listed in the country in which it is headquartered, along with its subsidiaries, affiliates, operating units or divisions Companies that have been merged, spun off or have changed their names are listed with a crossreference to the successor name and country where they can be found Be aware that some companies that have been merged still business under their former name in some countries and not in others In such cases, the new name is referred to in the listings Subsidiaries and Affiliates These are listed in the countries where they are headquartered with a cross-reference to the parent company SECTION III INTERNATIONAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRY ORGANIZATIONS This list of chemical industry and professional societies spans the world Included for each organization are its location and mailing addresses wherever possible, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail address and its Web site It provides a gateway to reach others who may be in similar industrial fields as your own It does not, however, include organizations or professional societies oriented to particular chemical disciplines or fields of specialization Introduction SECTION IV PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE ORGANIZATIONS This section provides environmental and industrial health professionals a quick route to locate organizations of similar interest in foreign countries Not included are advocacy organizations intended to impart consumer information or espouse special interest causes SECTION V INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCIES Activities to control the manufacture and use of hazardous chemicals know no boundaries While North American and European nations are most intense in their regulations and enforcement, there remains wide spread use of harmful substances in countries that are primarily agrarian While a company may be prevented from manufacturing or selling a banned substance in one country, it may continue to manufacture it in another country which has no restrictions (or lack enforcement) India and China, for example, are primary producers of pesticides and herbicides that have been banned in most western countries This section offers a gateway to U.S and foreign environmental agencies and ministries that can provide information about local regulations and restrictions SECTION VI STATE ENVIRONMENTAL, HEALTH AND OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AGENCIES Both U.S and international chemical manufacturers must comply with state and local environmental regulations, some of which may be more severe than federal regulations This is a convenient index to state agencies in the United States and its territories SECTION VII HOTLINES, DATABASES AND USEFUL WEB SITES Hotlines Hotlines, either maintained by government agencies, universities, or organizations, offer a quick, useful resource for obtaining information or starting a path for further exploration The hotlines here cover subjects from acid rain, air and asbestos to EPCRA and the Toxic Substances Control Act A brief description of their contents and hours of operation are given Use the hotlines to report emergencies, spills and other incidents that require instant notification and assistance Databases Databases are resources that contain environmental information in various fields Databases may be available from government or educational institutions online or by inquiry, or may be available from commercial establishments on-line or CD-ROM Some databases are essentially electronic entries to library catalogs and also provide access to full text articles and/or direct entry to publishers’ Web sites Useful Web sites In the process of preparing this reference book, the mere act of surfing the Web revealed surprising turns of the road, each one ending in a site that piques the researchers’ interest Some were dead ends, some were portals that bore fruit The Web sites here are by no means an exhaustive list, but each one deserves exploration; you’ll never know what you’ll find SECTION VIII POISON CONTROL CENTERS Advice for emergency treatment for exposure to hazardous materials can be obtained from a regional Poison Control Center Certified Regional Centers are designated by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) and are located throughout the United States In many locations, information can be obtained from independent centers or hospitals that maintain centers that may not be certified by the AAPCC Both certified and non-certified centers are listed in this section Poison Control Centers will also provide referrals for specialized care when necessary and in some cases may coordinate their activities with foreign centers in the case of accidents occurring in foreign locations A nationwide toll-free emergency hotline reaches every poison control center: 1-800-222-1222 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION J JEFFOL®, urethanes to Jeweler’s rouge 81 SECTION I
