The Woodlore courses take participants to experience tribal life with the native people of Namibia, or to shiver through an Arctic survival course in Lapland These are the places to fulfill the schoolboy dream of lighting fires with just a couple of sticks 'There are lots of simple survival tips, like it's often better to avoid anything which is green More energy is used up eating it than you get out of it Roots are best because you need carbohydrates.' There is a very serious purpose to what Mears does 'All around the world cultures are losing ancient skills as the latest generation is attracted away from the land to an easy life through technology,' he explains 'We live in a world where we can have whatever we want, but along the way we have lost contact with the natural world Without them, there's a danger we could lose sight of where we've come from.' 'The area around London is particularly threatened People need places where they can get close to nature.' But Mears is not against the latest technological developments and is well aware of the benefits _‘In this way people can become part of a global tribe, one which lives both for and from the natural world.’ Page of 10  Write your answers here You can write only the letter A, B, C, D, E, F, G or H H Question Read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space Use only ONE word in each space Write your answer in the numbered boxes below (0) has been done as an example THE POWER OF FILE SHARING The big music story of 2005 turned (0) out _ to be the success of the Arctic Monkeys, a British group whose debut single went straight (1) _the top of the charts But theirs was no ordinary success story in the music business Far (2) _ being discovered and promoted by one of the big record labels, the group had made it (3) _ their own; recording their own material and freely distributing it by the Internet Music fans had downloaded the songs, realized (4) _ good they were and then forwarded the files to their friends by means of what became known (5) _ 'file sharing' In (6) _words, the group's reputation had been established via word-of-mouth The previous decade had seen a real revolution (7) _ home recording It had become possible for anyone with musical talent, and a modest amount to invest in the latest digital equipment, to achieve home recordings of comparable quality (8) _ those produced in professional studios To people in the music business, (9) _, the idea of allowing free downloading was unthinkable Surely, they reasoned, if you gave your music away on the Internet, (10) _ would buy a hard copy But the success of the Arctic Monkeys demonstrated that the loss of potential income when people downloaded songs (11) _ than buying them, could be offset by the increased exposure the music got (12) _ a result In effect, it was worth making some songs freely available as a way of generating interest in others for which, of course, people had to pay  Write your answers here out 10 11 12 SECTION FOUR: WRITING (5.0 pts) Question Make any changes and addition to build the sentences from the cues given I / not / much time, / so / not / use / Internet / very often I not have much time, so I don’t use the Internet very often Lan / run / home / with / dog / tell / mother / what / Skippy / _ It / be / long time / since / I / last / hear / you Page of 10 Nowadays / Internet / increasingly/ develop / and /become/ important / part/ our/ daily life _ Linda / better / apologize / Mrs Green / lost / cell phone _ material / call / jean / name / sailors / Genoa / Italy _ They / have / dog / look /neighbors / whenever / they / go / holiday _ There / people / can’t help / laugh / as / see someone / slip / banana skin _ Question Complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first one Use the word given in brackets You must use between THREE AND FIVE WORDS, including the word given Don’t change the form of the word given (0) has been done as an example The pond isn't deep enough to swim in (TOO) The pond is too shallow to swim in We had such a lot of homework to at the weekend (SO) We had to at the weekend Hoa regrets not watching that film last night (HAD) Hoa that film last night All the students passed the exam except Jenny (WHO) Jenny was the _ pass the exam People believe that Alan's wife destroyed his diaries after he died (HAVE) Alan's diaries _ destroyed by his wife after he died The coffee machine in our office hasn’t worked for three months (OUT) The coffee machine in our office _ for three months The secretary said that they had run out of paper for the photocopier (LEFT) The secretary said that there was _ for the photocopier She found the photographs when she was cleaning her room (CAME) She when she was cleaning her room It was wrong of you to lie to me (TO) Page of 10 You the truth Question Read the advertisement below and write a letter of about 120 – 150 words to the Foreign Language Council requesting for more information about the courses , fees, etc (Please DO NOT show your address, your name or signature in the letter.)
