UNIT 7: TELEVISION Period 55 Lesson 1: Getting started I OBJECTIVES: Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students can: - Have an overview of the topic “Television” - Learn the names of some TV programs - Listen and read for specific information about “Television” through a conversation Practice listening, reading and speaking with the lexical items related to the topic "What is on today?” Character qualities: Ss will be more aware of spending time watching TV, and choose the best programmes for themselves Competencies: Ss will be able to: - read and choose, match, find the adjectives describing in the conversation, talk to others - work in group, independently, pair work II TEACHING AIDS Teacher: Textbooks, computer accessed to the Internet, projector Students: Textbooks, pen, coloured chalk III PROCEDURE Checking: During the lesson New lesson: Warm up (5’) *Aim: To attract Ss’ attention to the lesson and introduce the topic to lead in the lesson Show a picture and ask Ss to look at the title of the conversation and the picture Ask them some questions: T: What you think they are talking about? S: They are talking about their favourite TV programmes T: What TV programmes you like best? S1: I like watching cartoons best S2: I like game shows best …… Brainstorming - Write the words “TV PROGRAMMES” on the board - Ask Ss to work in groups: A and B - Group A uses yellow chalk; group B uses red chalk - Ss go to the board to write down the programmes they like one by one - Set a time limit: minutes Confirm, give comments and lead in the lesson cartoon football match film TV PROGRAMMES News game show music show Pre-stage * Aim: To prepare students with vocabulary related to the topic Television; Listen and read * Vocabulary - We are going to listen and read a dialogue between Phong and Hung about programmes on TV Answer the questions: a) They are Phong and Hung b) Maybe They are taking about programmes on TV c) They are watching the music show Task 1: Listen and read Task 1: T-Ss ,Ss-Ss - Teacher plays the recording twice - Students listen and read - Teacher checks students’ prediction Teacher calls students to read the conversation aloud Task * Aims: To have students get specific information of the conversation Choose the correct answer A, B or C C (different TV programmes) A (animated films) A (watching) A (educational) - T asks students to read the conversation again and choose the correct answers Encourage students not to look back at the conversation - Ss may this part in pairs - T checks the answers and ask the students to show where in the conversation to find them - T introduces conjunctions in compound sentences Conjunctions: I often watch them with my little brother, but he prefers cartoons Task * Aims: To check students understanding of the conversation and help students use the words in context Read the conversation and match 1-5 with a-e c (music talent show) a (animated film) e (cartoon) b (channel) d (educational programme) - Learn and practice using vocabulary/phrases related to the topic “Television” - Learn more adjectives to describe television programmers and characters - Identify how to pronounce the sounds /θ/ and /ð/ and practice pronouncing these sounds in isolation and in context Character qualities: Ss will be more aware of spending time watching TV and choose the best programmes for themselves Competencies: Ss will be able to - Write the words/phrase next to the definition, complete the sentences, listen to the words - work in group and independently, pair work II TEACHING AIDS Teacher: Textbooks, computer accessed to the Internet, projector Students: Textbooks III PROCEDURE Checking: (5’) Write the vocabulary words - Talk about your favourite TV programmes New lesson: Warm up * Aim: To attract Ss’ attention to the lesson and review some programs on TV Teacher’s and students’ activities music talent show animated film educational programme viewers channel game show Educational programme Contents - Teacher sticks pictures and words on the board - Students work in groups - Teacher asks students to go to the board to stick each word with its correct picture - The group with more correct answers will be the winner - It’s a way to make learning pronunciation fun Ss read slowly at first, then faster and faster T may turn it into a competition to see Who can read the twister fast and correctly Wrap-up and Homework * Aim: To revise the lesson and prepare for the next lesson Learn by heart all the new words - Rewrite the sentences into notebooks Find more school activities that have the sound /ө/ and /ð/ - Prepare lesson ( A closer look 2) * Evaluation: …………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………… UNIT 7: TELEVISION Period 57- Lesson 3: A closer look I OBJECTIVES: Knowledge: - Identify the functions of different questions words and practice with them - Know the meanings as well as the use of the three conjunctions to make compound sentences and practice using them Character qualities: Ss will be more aware of spending time watching TV, and choose the best programmes for yourself Competencies: Ss will be able to - complete sentences, match sentences, complete the conversation, ask and answer about TV in Viet Nam - work in group and independently, pair work II TEACHING AIDS Teacher: Textbooks, computer accessed to the Internet, projector Students: Textbooks, coloured chalk III PROCEDURE Checking: (5’) Write the vocabulary words - Talk things you like about television New lesson: Warm up * Aim: To remind Ss some words/ phrases related to TV programmes and question words they are familiar with and lead in the lesson Play game: Guess words 1/ What programme is “Children are always right” -> Game show 2/ What programme makes us laugh? ->Comedy 3/ What programme teaches us many subjects? ->Educational programme 4/ What is the programme that there are drawings or pictures made to look as if they are moving? ->Cartoon / animated film 5/ you can watch this programme at the same time it happens.->Live programme Play game: Guess words T calls one student to go to the board and read a description aloud The other students try to guess what word it is (Talk about sentences.) Those who work well will get good marks Pre-stage To remind Ss some question words they are familiar with and lead in the lesson Questions words 1/ What is the name of the film? 2/ What time is it on? 3/ How often is it on? 4/ When is it on? 5/ How many main characters are there in the film? 6/ What channel is it on? QUESTION WORDS - Ask Ss to look at the picture and answer the questions During-stage Task * Aim: To help students remind more questions they are familiar with Underline the question words What are you doing tomorrow? T asks Ss to read the conversation and underline the question words T demonstrates some more Wh- Questions Task * Aim: To help students know and identify the functions of different wh/h- question Match the question word with the information - When- time - How often- repetition - Where- place - How many- number - What- thing - Who- people - Why- reason - T allows Ss to read and the matching individually or in pair Explain if Ss have any difficulty understanding how to use use the question words Task * Aims: To help students practice more with question words 3.Use the question words in the box to complete the conversations How often you watch TV? B: I watch it every weekend - Allow Ss to work in pairs and make a similar conversation about their favourite TV programme - Encourage them to include as many questions as possible in their conversations - Call on some pairs to act out their conversations in front of the class - Check and correct if needed Task *Aim: Ss can explore some interesting facts about TV in other countries Complete the facts below Japan, Viet Nam Iceland the USA Ss work in groups and help one another to find the answers / make guesses - Call on some Ss for the answers Remind them of the correct way to give their answers E.g Pokemon cartoons are from Japan (They know the answer.) We think Pokemon cartoons are from Japan (They make a guess.) - Confirm the answers with the whole class Note: - Pokemon cartoons: Japanese television animation series, typically aimed at adults as well as children - Iceland /'aislənd/: Before 1981, there was no TV in July; before 1986, there was no TV on Thursday It is because people felt they could without TV once a week!
