Physician ☐ Non-Exempt ☒ Exempt Position Summary The purpose of Campus Health & Wellbeing is to help students achieve and maintain academic success and lifelong health and wellbeing by providing timely and appropriate primary and acute health care, disease and injury prevention education, professional mental health, outreach, educational services and campus consultations The physician in this role will be known as the Dr Art James Sports Medicine Physician to honor the legacy of a long-time Cal Poly Athletics team physician who was dedicated to the health and wellbeing of students The purpose of this position is to serve students, including Division I student-athletes, by providing physical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of both sport and non-sport related injuries and illnesses; serve as a consultant/resource to other health care practitioners, facilitate referrals to community-based resources and interface with outside medical, surgical, and other support providers when appropriate Duties and Responsibilities Reporting to the Medical Director, the following examples of typical work activities are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions performed by the Sports Medicine Physician; they are not meant to be an all-inclusive or restrictive Work assignments may involve related activities Essential Job Functions Daily 90% Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for Cal Poly students, including Division I intercollegiate student-athletes, in areas of urgent care, primary care and sports medicine settings Provide consultation to physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, physical therapists, athletic trainers, other sports medicine personnel, coaches and administrators Maintain complete medical records on student-athletes within appropriate electronic health record, including records of pre-participation clearance, care of any illnesses or injuries sustained, results of medical referrals or diagnostic testing, and any follow-up care occurring on or off campus Serve as a recognized authority to collaboratively direct medical care and coordinate final treatment decisions for student-athletes, including making decisions regarding return to participation, and setting appropriate activity limits in student-athletes returning to events, preparticipation physicals, as assigned and in collaboration with Campus Health and Wellbeing operations Maintain or delegate responsibility for case management, continuity, and coordination of care in complex cases As appropriate, work effectively with insurance and referral coordinator staff to manage financial considerations of patient referrals and case management across all insurance types, as well as the timely acquisition of specialty consultation, advanced imaging, and other ancillary diagnostic or therapeutic interventions in the care of student-athlete injuries and illnesses Follow generally accepted principles of good medical practice and notify Medical Director when deviations are observed in areas such as quality of care, appropriate resource utilization, communication or professionalism, and risk management Related Job Functions As Needed 10% Participate in campus and Health Services committees and campus health education Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned; may include student health center or campus committees and the campus health and safety program Required Education, Experience, and Credentials Education and Experience: Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more sports medicine residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties Licenses, Certificates, Credentials (by date of hire): Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California Valid unrestricted Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances Current board certification by the American Board of Sports Medicine or currently meeting Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements (strongly preferred) Board-certification in American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Primary Care specialty, OR Board certification in other ABMS specialty with appropriate primary care training/experience Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of, and the ability to effectively apply, the principles and methods essential to the diagnosis and treatment of sports medicine and general medical and surgical care Knowledge of medical advances in the practice and education of patients on health issues Thorough knowledge of community resources for sports medicine and general medical and surgical care Thorough knowledge of local, state, and national laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and treatment of mental health disorders Thorough knowledge of applicable professional ethics and standards Current competency to assess, diagnose and treat college-aged patients, including Division I intercollegiate athletes requiring urgent care, consistent with recognized standards for sports medicine, general standards of care within the scope of licensure Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality Excellent computer skills and the ability to enter data into the electronic health record or other computer applications Ability to accurately maintain patient records Ability to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialists, as well as students, administrators, faculty, and local hospitals and public mental health agencies Excellent communication skills particularly related to young adults Demonstrated ability to work with PC-based microcomputers and with Windows, including the ability to use an electronic health record Preferred Skills and Experience Two years or more of increasingly responsible experience in Sports Medicine Experience working in a student health center Prior or current affiliation with a hospital or outpatient clinic Knowledge of NCAA sports medicine best practices Special Conditions Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development Must be able to work additional hours, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis The person holding
