Robyn E Lebron It is worthy of note that energy is the one and only source of all things material, but it is known only through its effects on matter In other words, energy itself is an unknown mystery It may be discussed or described, but its existence was discovered by its effect on matter It may be called visible energy but its actual visibility comes from the way we perceive those effects We not perceive the energy itself In addition to the energy we just described by its connection with matter through Einstein’s theory “energy-mass equivalence” (anything having mass has an equivalent amount of energy), there exists in the universe what is known officially as dark energy In the early 1990s, Scientists thought, “The universe is full of matter and the attractive force of gravity pulls all matter together.” The logical conclusion was that the force of gravity must slow down the expansion of the universe Mass creates gravity, gravity creates pull, the pulling must slow the expansion On the contrary, observations showed that the rate of expansion of the universe, rather than slowing, is accelerating “Theorists still don’t know what the correct explanation is, but they have given the solution a name It is called dark energy.” (4) Scientists have become aware of it only because without it the rate of expansion of the universe should be reducing rather than increasing The proof of its existence lies in the observations of its effects So existence, in this case, is based on observation of effects – not direct observation In addition, it is important to note that dark energy, dark matter, black holes, and even the so-called “normal” energy related to “normal” matter through Einstein’s energy-mass equivalence all are not observable directly Any information science has gathered about them is indirect knowledge obtained by observing their effects on other matter and energy We cannot deny they exist, even though there has been no direct proof of their existence According to the 14
