INVESTING IN YOU INVESTING IN YOU: NOVEMBER 2014 MISSION: Investing in people who make a difference in the campus housing profession worldwide VISION: To ensure that every person has access to resources of the housing profession and is inspired to invest in its future From the ACUHO-I Foundation Chair: Richard DeShields: Greetings my ACUHO-I Foundation Friends: The ACUHO-I Foundation has identified its values as stewarding resources for our profession, providing ethical oversight of the Foundation and resources, providing opportunity and access to resources for all involved in college and university housing operations, and investment in our profession When one looks at the definition of “foundation,” terms like “starting point”, “basis”, “beginning”, “core” and “heart” all identify its meaning It is no wonder that I have found my experience as Foundation Chair this past year so rewarding and seen so much “heart” from our colleagues I have had the opportunity to work with some of the very best professionals in both the ACUHO-I Organization and the ACUHO-I Foundation I have seen countless of our colleagues give to the Foundation because they want to support the profession that I love to serve This support has been given through hours of service or through opening their wallets and providing monetary resources to support the causes of our Association I have seen so many people give, including seasoned professionals committing to become a major donor, new professionals making a monthly pledge, and corporate friends committing their resources to our industry I know that I consider ACUHO-I my professional alma mater and over the past year I have become even more fond of the causes we support I invite you to consider joining the Foundation through involvement or commitment of resources It is easy to give on line at the ACUHO-I website or by contacting our Central Office We’ve celebrated 25 years and now let’s help lay the supporting layer for our next 25 Some of our “core” will be completing their service to the ACUHO-I Foundation this year and I want to thank them for their service I have much admiration for them and their contributions to our profession It’s been an honor working with you Joanne Goldwater, Torry Brouillard Bruce, Allan Blattner, Anne Marie Klotz, Andrew Campbell, Brooke Daniel, Kathy Hobgood, Lori Patterson, and Ryan Majeres I also look forward to continue working in my past-chair role with the next Foundation Trustee Team: Sue Beebe (Chair), Alma Sealine (Chair Elect), Jody Stone (Vice Chair Regional Cabinet), D’aun Green (Vice Chair Development), Azfar Mian (Treasurer), Amy Aponte (Secretary), and Beth McCuskey (ACUHO-I Vice President) I also look forward to working with our leadership team, David B Stephen, Paula Bland, Craig Allen, Sarah Holmes, Jacque Bollinger, Lisa Diekow, Shana Alston, Angela Powell, Rich Bova, Kari Talik, Shigeo Iwamiya, Sandy Schoonover, and Teri Gray and all of our wonderful committee volunteers I would also like to sincerely thank the members of the selection committee reviewing applications for the ChairElect, Vice Chair for Foundation Cabinet and Secretary Positions: Beth McCuskey, Von Stange, D’aun Green, Sallie Traxler, and Sue Beebe for their active participation in the selection process, and the ACUHO-I Executive Board for their support and final approval of the nominees INVESTING IN YOU In closing, I want to recognize the 10 years of service to the ACUHO-I Foundation by our outgoing ACUHO-I Executive Sallie Traxler We value the work you’ve done as a change-agent for the Foundation, as a major donor and constant supporter, and through your professional development You helped create a legacy that supports our students on our home campuses and further advances our professional journey Thank you! Parthenon Award: 2015 champions are beginning their fundraising goals for their nominees I love to hear from ACUHO-I members that want to support these well deserving colleagues If you would like to know who has been nominated, please email me at deshielr@cwu.edu or sueb@housing.ufl.edu and we will be happy to share the secret with you Richard DeShields, Central Washington University ACUHO-I Foundation Chair Major Donor Spotlight: Deb Schmidt-Rogers Director of Residential Life Northwestern University ACUHO-I Executive Board I am just back from the annual GLACUHO conference where I was once again reminded what a privilege it is to work in student housing Having the opportunity to connect with 400 colleagues who are committed to serving our residents in the best way possible is a great way to spend three days While at GLACUHO, much of my time was spent "working" the Foundation table My role is to be a cheerleader for the Foundation - to encourage new professionals and those who are not as familiar gain an understanding about how they benefit from donating to the Foundation My path to major donor status was a long one I have been involved in ACUHO-I for years, attending conferences, presenting at conferences, serving on the Executive Board most recently I have been an avid participant in the silent auction and had spent years wondering about major donors Giving to the Foundation as a major donor was not about me at all My donation is only possible because of all my past supervisors from when I was a resident, RA, graduate student, and professional It is because someone thought I would be good at this work Someone thought I had something to give Someone thought that my efforts might make a difference in the lives of students I give because I hope that someday someone will remember that I thought they had that something too! Maybe they went to STARS and the light bulb went off Maybe they attended NHTI and their life path was solidified Maybe a speaker at the conference inspired them and they brought something new back to their campus All those are made possible by the Foundation How could I not make the decision to give!! During the fall semester, Tom Ellett and Patty Martinez became two time Major Donors, recommiting to the Foundation by pledging $5,000 over the next five years Thank you Tom and Patty! You can join Tom and Patty and become an Individual Major Donor For more information about our Major Donors or how to become a Major Donor, visit our website INVESTING IN YOU Your Investment in Action: Each year, the Major Gifts Committee hosts a meet and greet for Individual Major Donors at the annual conference and exposition This year, STARS graduates, Nathan Tack from University of Arizona and Melissa Williams from Oklahoma State University, spoke to the Individual Major Donors on July 1st at the Marriott Wardman Park Courtyard in Washington, D.C I have had many mentors who have helped me prepare for STARS College and for going into student affairs They have provided resources and contacts to help me break into the field Some of them are Bethany Hargraves, Coordinator of Leadership Development; Lexie McGarvey, Graduate Community Director; and Jen O'Brien, Assistant Director I am pursuing a career in student affairs because of all the opportunities it has presented me and the ability to work with students and be a resource for them Nathan Tack University of Arizona Public Management & Policy/Sports Management, Senior Residence hall experience: This will be my 4th year on campus as a student I have served as a RHA Representative, NRHH Member, RHA, NRHH IACURH Executive Board and I am currently the RHA President at the University of Arizona and I am also the IACURH Director Jessica Crabaugh is my on campus mentor and she has helped me develop so much and look at why I really want to pursue a career in student affairs She is always there to offer advice when needed and is very good at encouraging me This semester I am working on getting all of my ducks in a line with searching for a graduate school and everything else that goes along with that I talk about my STARS College experience all the time, it was such a great networking opportunity and full of information for my future in student affairs I will be attending OPE in the spring and have a few places in mind that I really have my heart set on but, who knows where I will end up STARS College taught me to Melissa Williams look for the right fit and that's what I’m doing Keeping an open mind and hoping for the Oklahoma State University Sociology/Philosophy, Senior best opportunities I am pursuing a career in student affairs because it doesn't feel like a job I never knew that this was an option until I got involved in residential life Now that I know, I can't see myself doing anything other than this I love the opportunity of watching students grown and develop I get to develop and mentor a group of freshman that live in my building and help them to get involved in leadership I want to be able to be that person that helps others decide where their path is going to go while in college It’s about getting involved and making your time fun and exciting and forming bonds that will last a lifetime Residence hall experience: Melissa is into her sixth year and currently serves as Leadership mentor for Drummond Hall For more information about our STARS and NHTI programs supported by your ACUHO-I Foundation, visit our website INVESTING IN YOU The Patron Pledge Spotlight: I Invest Because: Jen Golojuch Mount Ida College Karen Rockett Louisiana State University I invest in ACUHO-I because the organization has invested a lot in my career thus far I received the Rising Star Award from NEACUHO which allowed me to attend my first ACUHO-I annual conference in Orlando in 2008 In 2010, I received an NHTI scholarship and was able to attend NHTI through the support of the Foundation’s NHTI scholarship and additional funding support from NEACUHO NHTI was by far the best professional development experience I have received in my short career I consider ACUHO-I to be an organization where I continually receive quality professional development In addition, the community within ACUHO-I is always so warm and welcoming I decided to invest in the ACUHO-I Foundation as a way to help young professionals attend events and begin to explore the options available within the organization Regardless of the professional level one is at, I truly believe there is something to gain from being a member of ACUHO-I and supporting the Foundation I became a supporter of ACUHO-I Foundation because after years of participation and receiving support, I felt it was time to give back and support the association that helped me to grow as a professional I started in housing through a non-traditional track coming from the private sector Attending my first ACUHO-I conference when just consulting was such an eye opener to a world I really did not know existed Being part of an organization that truly lives and is so passionate about others and their development is something I had to learn more about ACUHO-I has offered me so many opportunities to grow as a professional The networking alone is such a valuable resource as well as the mentorship from seasoned professionals that share your passion Conferences, webinars, and even the resource library all continue to provide such support I just wanted to give back to the Foundation to see it continue to provide support for colleagues as they thrive and grow in such an invaluable field Without ACUHO-I, I’m not sure I would have ever know the diversity of opportunities to touch others’ lives Thanks to such a great Foundation!
