2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Dear Parents & Students: Four – year, 24 credit Traditional Program http://www.fldoe.org/academics/graduation-requirements This curriculum guide is prepared and published to provide essential information which each student needs to plan a challenging academic program The courses offered reflect the needs of our students and our commitment to academic excellence Early Graduation for 24 Credit Options Students Students who complete the requirements for graduation before the semester of graduation for their cohort class may elect to: Particular attention should be paid to course and level when choosing classes It is essential that parents and students carefully examine course offerings in order to best select those which will prepare the student for a lifetime ● Graduate at the end of the semester in which the requirements have been completed OR ● Continue enrollment as full-time students in the School District of Palm Beach County The grades earned by these students will become a part of the students’ permanent record and calculated in the students’ GPA/HPA Once student requests have been approved for the coming year, schedule changes will be made only for the following reasons: Missing a graduation requirement Student lacks a prerequisite Teacher recommended level change (i.e.: honors, regular) These changes will be made during a two week period at the beginning of the semester only As a result parents are encouraged to assist students in selecting their curriculum Please feel free to utilize the professional school staff to discuss your choices and your goals Such students must submit a request to graduate or continue enrollment to the principal prior to the beginning of the school year in which the student will complete the requirements for graduation The students may continue as students in the school district until the end of the regular school year in which their cohort class graduates The principal may deny continued enrollment for a student who has met graduation requirements Early graduation students may participate in the end-of-year graduation ceremonies Let’s make the 2021-2022 school year the best ever Special Diploma Requirements Master all standards on Florida Student Performance Standards Specific courses to satisfy the required credits will be determined for each student based on the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) Students must demonstrate mastery of 70% of all performance standards for each course as indicated on the Student’s IEP In addition to credit requirements, candidates for a special education diploma must comply with the appropriate exceptionality assessment test requirements for students in Exceptional Education Programs Sincerely, Kelly Burke Principal -2- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide American College Testing (ACT) The ACT is a four-part test used primarily for college screening The four parts include: English, mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning Fee and registration information may be obtained through the Guidance Department Completion with satisfactory scores is required for college entry TESTING PROGRAMS The following are standardized tests that our Student Services Department administers for high school graduation Florida Standards Assessment English Language Arts (FSA ELA) The FSA ELA is the statewide test that assesses the performance of Florida’s students and schools on the Florida Standards which are Florida’s curriculum guidelines There is a Reading and Writing portion to this test It is given to 9​th and 10th grade students Students must pass the 10​th grade test to graduate Results are reported on transcripts ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS Tech Prep - Preparation for Technologies The workplace is changing rapidly, requiring higher skills for most careers Preparation for Technologies, TECH PREP, is an initiative designed to guide the student toward a variety of career opportunities through further post-secondary (college/technical center) training TECH PREP provides the student with higher-level academic courses along with occupational training Examples of TECH PREP fields are industrial/engineering technology (Graphic Communications, Drafting Design, Electronics Computer Applications), business technology (Accounting, Office Systems Technology, Business Administration), health technology (Radiology, sonographer, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, etc.) or human/public service technology (Criminal Justice) End Of Course (EOC) Assessment The Florida EOC Assessments are part of Florida’s Next Generation Strategic Plan for the purpose of increasing student achievement and improving college and career readiness EOC assessments are computer-based, criterion-referenced assessments that measure the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for specific courses, as outlined in their course descriptions EOC’s are administered in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology and US History TECH PREP Students: Are prepared to enter Community College Associate of Science programs without having to take remedial courses in college Can be prepared to continue studying in four-year baccalaureate degree programs Can qualify, through successfully completing occupational programs, for higher paying jobs after graduation This can provide the money to help pay college expenses PSAT/NMSQT Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test The PSAT is a test that is required to be taken by students in their Sophomore year Juniors may choose to take the test to qualify for merit scholarships PSAT scores determine eligibility for consideration in the National Merit Scholarship Program Fee and registration information may be obtained through the Guidance Department Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) The SAT is a multiple-choice college-screening test made up of two separate timed verbal and mathematical sections The verbal section includes analogies, sentence completions, and questions based on reading passages Mathematics includes algebra, reasoning, and geometry Completion with satisfactory scores is required for college entry Course sequences have been established to meet the academic and technical program needs for TECH PREP students See your counselor for details and course selection Adult Education A maximum of one credit can be earned each calendar year To enroll in the evening class, the student must obtain permission from the guidance counselor to take the subject -3- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide departments In addition, Hispanic ​students may choose as an elective a Spanish language and literature class for native speakers (see ​“Spanish for Native Speakers” listed under Foreign Languages) Dual Enrollment Students may enroll anytime (rising 10​th grade students) in the Dual Enrollment Program, which provides an opportunity for students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously Credit earned in college courses may be utilized for elective credits towards the high school diploma and for college credit at either Palm Beach Community College or Florida Atlantic University A grade of “C” or better must be earned in order for the credit to be transferred to Florida State colleges Students with a 3.0 GPA/HPA and completed written permission may enroll Interested students should see their respective counselors Students enrolled in this program must maintain a 3.0 GPA in their other high school academic work and must earn a “C” or better in their college level work in order to remain in the Dual Enrollment program The goal of the ​E.S.O.L program is to mainstream the students within two years into the mainstream classroom, while ensuring that the transition leads to academic success While in the mainstream classroom students still receive accommodations such as dictionaries and extended time in testing, until their exit from ESOL program once they have demonstrated Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing proficiency in English Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Students are scheduled into ESE courses as dictated by their IEP’s In most cases the academic courses offered follow the regular course descriptions Elective course descriptions are listed under a separate section Students whose course work will generate a special diploma follow a unique Functional Life Skills Curriculum, noted with an SE English for Speakers of Other Languages (E.S.O.L.) Students enrolled in this program should consult with the E.S.O.L​ Department Coordinator or Guidance Counselor regarding course selection The ​E.S.O.L program is designed to serve non-English or limited English speaking students All students with limited English are initially tested and placed in the Sheltered English content classes: Developmental Language Arts or Intensive Reading, English, Earth /Space Science, Biology, Algebra or Geometry These classes provide English instruction while studying the content area subjects Support is supplied through Community Language Facilitators, modifications to the curriculum, accommodations such as extended time for testing and the use of translation dictionaries In addition​, E.S.O.L teachers are trained to use strategies to facilitate their comprehension Advanced Placement Program The Advanced Placement Program administered by the College Board provides qualified students the opportunity to take college level courses on the high school campus These courses, taught by high school teachers, include stringent college level curriculum experiences and culminate in a three-hour standardized examination Fees are paid by Palm Beach County Schools provided the student is enrolled in the course Students who demonstrate the required level of proficiency on the examination are eligible for college credit in that particular subject area Eligible students are identified based on PSAT/SAT scores, GPA, teacher recommendation and readiness to participate in post-secondary academic work The intent is for those students to move quickly into the mainstreamed E.S.O.L Support Program ESOL students are monitored throughout the year to ensure appropriate placement in their content classes The E.S.O.L program also provides opportunities for students to take a variety of electives: Art, Business Technology, Computer Education, Driver Education, Foreign Language, Family and Consumer Sciences, Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Technology Education Please refer to the course listings by specific -4- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide SUGGESTED COURSE SEQUENCE FLORIDA BRIGHT FUTURES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Florida Academic Scholars Award 3.5 Minimum unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale in the 15 credits identified by the Florida Board of Regents as college preparatory courses The GPA is calculated after the seventh semester, and at the end of the year; AND has attained a 1330 on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT AND 100 hours of Community Service The Florida Medallion Scholars Award has attained a minimum score of 1210 on the SAT or a minimum score of 25 on the ACT 3.0 Minimum, unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale in the 15 credits identified by the Florida Board of Regents as college preparatory courses AND 75 hours of Community Service NINTH English I Earth Space Algebra PE Practical or Fine Arts Elective/Foreign Language TENTH English II Biology Geometry World History Foreign Language Electives ELEVENTH English III Chemistry Algebra II American History Electives TWELFTH English IV Economics (½) Am Government (½) Math Science Electives COMPUTER USE POLICY The Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Awards Has completed the secondary school portion of a sequential program of studies that requires at least ​three secondary school vocational credits (excluding on-the-job-training) taken over at least two academic years, and is continuing in a planned, related post-secondary education program; AND has passed the College Placement Test of its equivalent (SAT/ACT) AND has earned a unweighted GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the subjects required for graduation, ​excluding electives​ (does not require college prep); AND has earned a 3.5 GPA in required vocational courses; AND has earned a vocational-ready diploma; AND has met the scores on either: CPT: Reading 83, Sentence Skills 83, Algebra 72 OR SAT: Verbal 440, Math 440 OR ACT: Reading 19, English 17, Math 19 Computers are provided for student use in classes and in the media center All use of the school computers should be for the purpose of completing assigned work Any student who chooses to utilize any computer at Olympic Heights must so in an ethical manner Using the computers, networks, printers, or multi-media devices must be ethical and said use must be consistent with the policies and practices of the Palm Beach County School Board Copyright laws apply to the use of all on-school computers In general, students' use of computers is limited specifically and exclusively to that which the teacher has assigned MEDIA CENTER Olympic Heights High School Media Center’s goal is to help students meet their educational requirements The library collection is centered on the school curriculum The media center is open from 7:00 a.m to 3:30 p.m Monday through Thursday and from 7:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m on Friday All students are welcome before and after school, but a pass is required during normal school hours -6- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide APPROVED ELECTIVE COURSES POLICY: Freshman applicants to the State University System must have four additional high school credits as electives Students and counselors are advised to ​consider carefully the importance of elective coursework Completion of the required 19 credits for SUS admission guarantees acceptance ​only in the case of Talented 20 students Therefore, the stronger an applicant’s preparation (including electives), the better are chances of admission in general and to the university of choice specifically STATE UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS The State of Florida University System requirements for entrance include: ● At least the equivalent of a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale for all credit courses taken in grades 9-12 ● A score of 1010 or more on the combined verbal and quantitative parts of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or a composite score of 21 or more on the enhanced American College Test (ACT) Each university has requirements in addition to those stated; ​satisfying minimum requirements does not insure acceptance English Three of which must have included substantial writing requirements Mathematics At the level of Algebra I and above Science Two of which have included substantial laboratory (Biology, Chemistry) Social Studies Includes: World History US History, American Government & Economics, Foreign Language Both credits must be sequential and in the same language Electives SCHOLARSHIP AND HONORS INFORMATION A variety of scholarships are available locally and through the office of Financial Assistance at the Florida State Department of Education See your guidance counselor for specific details An Academic Honor Diploma is awarded to students who satisfy specific criteria Students should consult with their guidance counselor, check Edline and come to the Career Center for specific details ACADEMIC POLICIES Attendance Any student who has not been in attendance for instruction for a minimum of 135 hours may not be awarded a credit, unless the student has demonstrated mastery of the student performance standards in the course of study as provided by the rules of the district school board Repeating of Courses A student may repeat any course in which they received an original grade of “D” or “F” Credit may be earned only once For students entering high school during the 2007 school year and thereafter, a course is forgiven if a student receives a grade of ​C or higher ​on the repeat effort of that same core course An elective is forgiven by any elective taken the following semester after the initial elective course being forgiven has been taken -7- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide Deal fairly and consistently with matters concerning academic honesty Student Placement Students are placed in the required academic courses according to teacher recommendations, grades from pre-requisite courses and standings on standardized tests Students may not choose or change the level unless there is improper academic placement Appropriate Testing Behaviors and Independent Work Behaviors In order to submit tests, quizzes, or independent class work for academic credit, students must demonstrate the following appropriate behaviors during testing and independent work time Students must: ● work silently, ● refrain from transmitting information via any electronic device, ● refrain from communicating altogether, except with the teacher, ● concentrate solely on their own work without looking at other students’ papers, ● take responsibility for keeping their work covered, ● refrain from using any unauthorized aids Schedule Requests All requests for schedule changes must be completed before the 10​th day of the semester and only for one of the following reasons: ● Academically misplaced ● Failure to have taken or passed a prerequisite course ● Passed course previously All requests for schedule changes ​require parental approval Transfer of Credit All evidence of work or credits earned at another school, college, or university offered for acceptance shall be based on an official transcript Work or credits from non-accredited schools must be validated as provided by Board Policies All transferring students must pass the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) or FSA Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty means any form of academic plagiarizing, cheating, lying, or stealing including but not limited to submitting, attempting to submit, or assisting another student in submitting any academic work that is not the sole enterprise of the individual student The following are examples of academically dishonest behaviors Plagiarism​- Submission of the words, ideas or opinions of another as if they are your own This includes but is not limited to: ● directly quoting (copying word-for-word) another person’s or source’s words without quotation marks and/or attribution ● putting into one’s own words the ideas of another (this includes Internet and other media sources), without giving him/her credit for those ideas ● presenting someone else’s original idea as one’s own ● copying another student’s work or presenting an assignment completed by someone else as one’s own This includes purchasing or obtaining a paper or any other written or creative work and submitting it as one’s own ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Olympic Heights Community High School (OHCHS) seeks to create an environment in which academic honesty and integrity are key to students’ success Academic honesty is vital to the educational goals of OHCHS All members of the OHCHS community -students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators -are responsible for creating and maintaining this honest atmosphere Academic honesty is defined as the performance of all academic work without cheating, plagiarizing, lying, stealing, or receiving improper assistance The goals of this academic honesty policy are to: Foster personal integrity and a culture of academic honesty at OHCHS Maintain the academic reputation of OHCHS Cheating/Unauthorized Assistance​ – Giving or receiving help with academic work without the approval of one’s -8- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide teacher This includes sharing answers on homework assignments without the expressed permission of the ● ● ● instructor, copying test answers, and/or sharing or distributing one’s graded work Lying / Tampering​ – Giving or producing any false academic information This includes: ● falsifying lab or experimental results or fabricating (making up) any data or information ● altering (changing) any official school document including but not limited to grades or attendance records consequences and early intervention consequences as listed in the School Board of Palm Beach County Student and Family Handbook​, School-based Team referral, school service work, detention, Saturday detention, loss of extra-curricular privileges, in-school intervention program, and/or in-school suspension.* T​heft ​– Stealing or taking by any authorized manner information related to any academic work This includes but is not limited to: stealing tests / quizzes / answer keys taking possession of another student’s work without their knowledge or permission Students exhibiting any of the above academically dishonest behaviors will be considered in violation of this *falsifying and/or altering official school records, lab/experimental results, or data *stealing tests, quizzes, instructional materials, or answer keys *taking possession of another student’s work without their knowledge or permission *plagiarizing a major essay, project, or research paper *​Repeated incidents of academically dishonest behavior may also result in additional penalties including but not limited to out of school suspension Consequences Tier One Consequences: Offenses Tier One offenses MUST automatically receive the following consequences ​in addition to​ one or more of the punishments listed Automatic: ALL of these must occur -Zero on related assignment -Communication of offense to parent/guardian Additional: at least ONE of these must be added to the automatic from above Offenses are broken into two tiers Each tier is paired with consequences, providing teachers, counselors, and administrators a variety of options regarding the referral/discipline process Tier One Offenses: *copying answers or entire assignments from another student (this includes but is not limited to homework, class work, essays, and projects) *copying quiz or test answers from another student *communicating homework, class work, quiz, or test answers or ideas to another student (“communication” includes but is not limited to talking, hand signals, text messaging, and/or note passing) *submitting written work that is produced collaboratively unless collaboration has been explicitly directed and noted by the teacher Tier Two Consequences: Tier Two offenses MUST receive the following consequences ​in addition to​ one of the punishments listed Out of school suspension, mandatory (10 days) -District imposed consequences as listed in the Palm Beach County Student and Family Handbook COURSE REQUESTS AND SCHEDULING In the spring, students will submit their course requests All requests must have the necessary teacher recommendations and parental approval Tier Two Offenses: *multiple (two or more) academic dishonesty infractions -9- Olympic Heights Community High School - 2021– 2022 Curriculum Guide and financial goals prepares students for the wise use of economic resources throughout life The students are provided with the concepts needed to understand international trade As part of the Academy of Finance, students are made aware of career opportunities in the various areas of business/finance through guest speakers and field trips TITLE​: MARINE CORPS LEADERSHIP III LEVEL GRADE CREDIT TYPE Regular 11 - 12 E Description: Cadets will augment the LE-1 classes as training and leadership cadre LE-3 cadets will begin to use​ their leadership training as they assume positions of increased responsibility within the MCJROTC program TITLE: MARINE CORPS LEADERSHIP IV LEVEL GRADE CREDIT TYPE Regular 12 E Description: The MCJROTC LE-4 class is principally practical application interspersed with leadership forums that include resolving group conflicts, equal opportunity/sexual harassment/fraternization, preparation of lesson plans, research papers, current events dealing with national security issues, and general military subjects The MCJROTC LE-4 class is principally the operational and administrative cadre of the MCJROTC program TITLE: MARINE CORPS LEADERSHIP I LEVEL GRADE CREDIT TYPE Regular 9-12 E DESCRIPTION: ​The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop a broad range of basic skills and knowledge, with opportunities for total development in leadership This course further enables students to develop positive attitudes, good citizenship, and patriotism through character-building activities The Marine Corps JROTC provides military instruction in a learning environment useful to students in a future military or civilian career TITLE: MARINE CORPS LEADERSHIP II LEVEL GRADE CREDIT TYPE Regular 10-12 E DESCRIPTION: ​The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop a broad range of intermediate level skills and knowledge, with opportunities for total development in leadership This course enables students to develop positive attitudes, good citizenship, and patriotism through character-building activities The Marine Corps JROTC provides military instruction in a learning environment useful to students in a future military or civilian career TITLE: BUSINESS & ENTREPRENEURIAL PRINCIPLES LEVEL GRADE CREDIT TYPE Honors 10 - 12 E DESCRIPTION:​ This course is designed to provide an introduction to business organization, management, and​ ​entrepreneurial principles Topics include communication skills, various forms of business ownership and organizational structures, supervisory/management skills, leadership skills, -
