SCOPE Monona/Madison Branch Newsletter APRIL 2015 TUESDAY, APRIL 28, 2015 6:30 p.m SALAD SUPPER If your last name begins with M-Z, please bring a salad to serve about 10 people We need all kinds: main dish, fruit, pasta, vegetable The other half of the alphabet will pay $8 Please bring your own plate and silverware Rolls and dessert will be provided 7:30 p.m PROGRAM: National AAUW Fellowship/Grant Recipient Dr Alana Sterkel is a recipient of an AAUW Fellowship Alana’s mother, who was always an inspiration, died of brain cancer when Alana was 15 Her death instilled Alana with a deep desire to help others who suffer from deadly diseases Alana graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Molecular and Cellular Biology After working in a research lab for a few years to save money and help raise her younger brother, Alana left to attend graduate school at the University of Wisconsin where she recently earned her PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology with the help of the American Fellowship from the AAUW and members like us Her field altering research on the mechanisms of disease of Blastomyces dermatitidis was recently published in the Journal of Immunology She now works as a Clinical Microbiology Fellow at UW Hospital and plans to become a director of a clinical microbiology lab to reach her goal of helping people who suffer from disease by diagnosing infections She also plans to continue her research to find new ways to help people Hostesses: Reta Harring, Marian Ehrenberg, Robby Sonzogni, Liz Senseman, Kleo Baruth Kritz, Donna Anderson We meet in the lower level of the Monona Community Center, 1011 Nichols Rd PRESIDENTS' CORNER, Sally Keyel & Stephanie Sorensen There's still time to sign up for the State Convention in Elkhart Lake Our branch will pay for your registration Let Dee Zimmerman, Kathy Bell or Consuelo Lopez Springfield know if you want to go so you can arrange to carpool It's a fun and stimulating time! Membership Vice President, Jan DeVoe; Finance Officer, Lynn Christensen; Co-President, Ellie Beck; Program Vice President, Susan Becker Public Policy Report: Kathy Bell reported that current public issues being discussed are as follows: 1) Equal pay for women 2) Inclusion of dental coverage in Medicare This is presently before Congress 3) Voter ID is now a permanent requirement for voters in Wisconsin as of April 8, 2015 Book Sale Report: Anne Doran reported that the sign-up sheets for working the book sale are available Wanda also printed flyers for everyone to distribute to notify the public Trips: Georgene identified three trips available all members September 16 is a trip to Appleton to the Trout Museum to see the Norman Rockwell “Portrait of an American,” lunch at Fratello Restaurant, and the Paine Art Museum “Dressing Downton, Changing Fashions for Changing Times.” Cost is $75.00 August 15 is the deadline for signing up August 21 is a trip to American Players Theater to see Jim DeVita’s one person show about the Iliad Since only 12 persons indicated interest Georgene is arranging a car pool for transportation The local restaurant has not yet opened for the season so the cost of lunch is not available Therefore, the total trip cost is yet to be determined Georgene is intending to purchase the theater tickets tomorrow so any others interested must call her immediately tomorrow Date to be determined could be a trip to the Dells to the dinner theater to see the musical “Ring of Fire.” Interested persons should call Georgene Members are reminded that these trips are great fun and also raise money for our scholarship program State Convention report: Anyone interested in attending the state convention April 24-25 in Elkhart Lake should register Scholarships: Before the merging of branches, the Madison Branch established scholarship/awards program with the University of Wisconsin Foundation Robby Sonzogni described the recipients for this spring This year two returning UW students will each receive an award of $1000 Three more students will receive $200 each Interest Groups Up-dates: The afternoon book group will meet at Dorothy Hujik’s home, not at Dorothy Haines.The movie group will meet March 25 at 12:35 at the Star Theater to see Kingsmen;
